Avery Brewing Co. to Add The Real Peel IPA to Year-Round Lineup

AveryRealPeelcans_editedAvery Brewing Company (Boulder, Colorado) recently announced that The Real Peel India Pale Ale with Tangerine Peel will officially release as the brewery’s newest Year-Round offering on May 19.

“Inspired by a . . . taproom-only beer that Boulder locals have come to enjoy every summer for the past seven years,” the folks at Avery Brewing Co. decided to develop The Real Peal IPA as a “bright, fresh, and zesty” offering that can be enjoyed all year long.  Beginning with a base of crisp Rocky Mountain glacier water, Columbus, Chinook, Centennial and Cascade hops, this American India Pale Ale (6.3% ABV) is then dosed with 100% real tangerine peel “to create [a] brilliant, zesty, and fresh IPA that will satisfy rain or shine.”

“It’s been a project that has been ongoing for six or seven years”, says Andy Parker, Chief Barrel Herder at Avery. “As we developed this beer, we have made small tweaks each year to make it better and better. It’s been a staff favorite forever and at this point, it’s time to get it out to the Avery nation to enjoy.”

The Real Peel IPA will officially release on Friday, May 19 and will be available year-round.  You can expect to find this offering in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Colorado and throughout the rest of Avery Brewing’s expansive distribution network.  Prost!

Avery Brewing Launches Coconut Porter as Latest Botanicals & Barrels Offering

averycoconutporterbottleAvery Brewing Company (Boulder, Colorado) has announced that Coconut Porter will officially release on April 7 as the fifth installment in the brewery’s Botanicals & Barrels series.

Originally slated for release in early 2016, Coconut Porter was held back a bit because the folks at Avery Brewing wanted to ensure that this beer was absolutely perfect before it made it to shelves.  That yearlong delay was spent “making small tweaks, specifically regarding the way the coconut is infused into the beer.”  They now believe Coconut Porter is where it should be and that it is finally ready to be the newest addition to their Botanicals & Barrels series, a lineup of beers that “have all been aged in oak barrels for at least three months and have the addition of one ‘botanical’ ingredient outside the standard malted barley, hop, yeast, and water recipe.”  Coconut Porter now joins Raspberry Sour, Vanilla Bean Stout, Tangerine Quadruple Ale, and Apricot Sour in this series.

Just as the name implies, Coconut Porter is an Imperial Porter (10.4 % ABV) that has been loaded with real coconut flakes roasted by “Spice of Life Catering Services in Boulder, Colorado, to ensure consistency and quality.”  The beer was then aged in Bourbon barrels to lend vanilla and oak tones that “complement the chocolaty and sumptuous nature of this delectable Porter.”

“Infusing coconut flavor into beer is very challenging at a production level,” says Andy Parker, Chief Barrel Herder at Avery. “We had great success with coconut porters in the past, such as Momi Hiwa and Dui Cochi, but we recently found a way to better dial in the amount of coconut flavor so it is consistent batch over batch. Our goal is to let all elements of the beer shine. There is substantial coconut flavor, but you don’t lose any of the richness of the porter or the bourbon oak characters from the barrels. It’s a fantastically balanced beer that we now can produce all year long.”

Avery Brewing Company will host an official bottle release event for Coconut Porter on April 7, and the beer will then hit distribution in the weeks that follow.  You can expect to find this offering available in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Colorado and throughout the rest of Avery Brewing’s expansive distribution area.  There is a good amount of hype and anticipation surrounding the long-awaited release of Coconut Porter, so be sure to check this one out once it hits shelves and taps in your area later this month.  Prost!

Avery Brewing Company Releases Hog Heaven in Cans, Rebrands as Imperial Red IPA

hog-heaven-can-with-glassWith the announcement that Hog Heaven will now be packaged exclusively in 12 oz. cans, Avery Brewing Company (Boulder, Colorado) has also officially changed the beer’s style classification from Barleywine to Imperial Red IPA.

Shortly after it was first released in 1998 as a Dry-Hopped Barleywine-Style Ale, Hog Heaven proved its worth by becoming “the beer that changed everything at Avery Brewing.”  Brewed as an honest representation of Adam Avery’s love for big beers, this offering attracted a lot of attention to the brewery by earning “two Silver Medal wins at the Great American Beer Festival in 2004 and 2007, and subsequently set the stage for the bold beers that would follow such as The Maharaja in 2005, Rumpkin in 2011, Tweak in 2014.”  Having never forgotten the incredibly impactful role this beer has played in their success, Avery employees often have a glass of Hog Heaven in hand during celebratory times at the brewery.

As the years have passed since 1998, the American craft beer industry has seen an incredible amount of growth and change.  After much curiosity and experimentation, our nation’s brewers have expanded upon established beer styles and even created a few new ones.  Truly being a beer before its time, Hog Heaven has now found a new classification as an Imperial Red India Pale Ale.  The decision to make this style change was made with much consideration, and it is one that Avery Brewing Company feels better fits this iconic beer.

If you happen to be a Barleywine fan that is left a little bummed out by this news, worry not because Avery has plans in place to have Hog Heaven pay further respect to the style soon.  Since Hog Heaven was greatly inspired by Bigfoot Barleywine-Style AleAvery Brewing Company will collaborate later this year with Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (Chico, California) to create a blend of both beers that will be featured in Sierra Nevada’s 2017 Beer Camp.  Stay tuned because we will absolutely hit you with more news concerning this collaboration once more information surfaces.

Hog Heaven Imperial Red IPA is available now in its new packaging format of 4-packs of 12 oz. cans, and can be found at craft beer establishments in Alabama, Florida, Colorado and throughout the rest of Avery Brewing’s distribution area.  Now that the brewery has introduced these cans, this does mean that Hog Heaven is no longer available in 22 oz. bombers.

Whether you wish to enjoy this beer as an American Barleywine or Imperial Red IPA, that is completely up to you since Hog Heaven remains the same beer despite the style reclassification.  In the grand scheme of things, the change in name honestly means nothing.  In our eyes, Hog Heaven is simply Hog Heaven.  It remains a classic American craft beer that deserves the respect and attention of our community, so pick up a 4-pack in the near future to honor it as such.  Prost!

Avery Brewing Company Plans to Release Apricot Sour in February

averylogoAvery Brewing Company (Boulder, Colorado) has announced that Apricot Sour will become the newest offering to join the brewery’s Botanicals & Barrels Series.

To become a part of Avery Brewing Company’s Botanicals & Barrels family of beers, the offering must meet the following criteria:

  • It must be aged in barrels for at least three months
  • It must consist of just one ingredient outside of the standard grain, hops, yeast, and water recipe

With the addition of fruit and a substantial aging period in oak barrels, Apricot Sour easily meets these requirements to result in “a bright and tangy Sour Ale that artfully highlights juicy apricots and barrel-aged tartness.”  The 7.3% ABV Apricot Sour joins Raspberry Sour, Vanilla Bean Stout, and Tangerine Quad as the fourth release in this popular, new series from Avery Brewing.

“The interesting thing about our Botanicals & Barrels series is that as beautiful and simple as the final beer is, it is the culmination of an insanely complex and intricate process”, says Travis Rupp, Avery’s Research and Development Manager and Beer Archaeologist.

“As the second sour of the series, it is brewed with the same bacterial and yeast cocktail as Raspberry Sour”, says Special Project Brewer Leigh Audin, “however the result is a more lactic beer with minimal malt character and a ton of apricot”.

Apricot Sour will first launch on draft in Avery Brewing Company’s Taproom on Monday, January 30.  This offering will then be sent out into distribution in 22 oz. bottles and on draft beginning early February.  You can expect to find this offering on shelves and taps at craft beer establishments in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of Avery Brewing’s distribution area.  If you happen to miss the first wave of Apricot Sour at your favorite craft beer spot, worry not because all releases in the Botanicals & Barrels Series are available year-round.  With time, we are all guaranteed a shot at trying this new Sour Ale from Avery Brewing Company.  Prost!

AletotheChiefAvery Brewing Company (Boulder, Colorado) recently announced that Ale to the Chief, A Presidential Pale Ale is returning to shelves and taps for the 2016 election season.

Only available every four years, Ale to the Chief was originally brewed back in 2009 to celebrate Inauguration Day.  This offering reached such a level of popularity that it returned in 2012 to celebrate democracy throughout the entire election season.  This Presidential (a.k.a. not Imperial) Pale Ale returns for a “third term” during this year’s election boasting a hefty dry-hopping of Cascade hops for a powerful floral and citrus punch.  The hops are balanced with a malt bill of “Caramel-120 malt adding contributing caramel flavor and color, Honey Malt for honey-like sweetness, and Dark Munich Malt bringing biscuity notes to the table.”  The finished product comes in at 8.1% ABV and is truly “a brew worthy of the Oval Office.”

From the label:

”We the Brewers of Avery Brewing Company, in order to form a more perfect ale, require leadership that can liberate us from quagmires in foreign lands; embrace environmentally sound energy alternatives; continue healing our healthcare system; and unite the parties around this bipartisan brew. We hereby pledge to provide him or her with an ample amount of our Presidential Pale Ale whilst they achieve the aforementioned goals! Hail to the Chief!”

Avery Brewing adds El Gose to year-round portfolio

ELGoseglasscanAvery Brewing Company (Boulder, Colorado) recently announced that El Gose German-style Sour Ale with Lime and Sea Salt Added is the latest offering to join the brewery’s year-round lineup.

El Gose is a new craft beer offering from Avery Brewing that has German and Mexican brewing styles and ingredients/garnishes fusing together effortlessly in each 12 oz. can.  This brew starts with a base of a traditional German Gose, a salty & sour wheat beer, that then gets a Mexican Lager twist thanks to the addition of quality sea salt and lime juice.  The finished beer comes in at 4.5% ABV and acts as a refreshing, go-to brew suitable for nearly every occasion.

Founder and CEO Adam Avery is excited to add an Avery twist to this traditional style by adding a twist of lime. “I love Mexican lagers with limes squeezed into them, and I wanted to make something similar that had more flavor and more mouthfeel. So this beer and its label are a fusion of a modern Mexican lager and a German ale from 500 years ago.”

Six-packs of 12 oz. cans and kegs of El Gose have started shipping out from the brewery this week and should be hitting craft beer shelves and taps any day now.  Craft beer fans can find El Gose in Alabama, Florida and throughout Avery’s 35 state distribution footprint.  Look for this brew on your next beer run to make these hot and humid days of summer a bit more tolerable.  Prost!
