Boulevard Brewing Co. Brings Chocolate Ale Back in Time for Valentine’s Day

Boulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, Missouri) has officially announced that it will begin the Limited Release of Chocolate Ale (2021), a special collaboration project with Christopher Elbow Chocolates, in late January 2021.

Developed nearly ten years ago to serve as the “perfect Valentine’s Day gift” for beer lovers, Chocolate Ale (2021) is an American Strong Ale featuring Valrhona [chocolate] from the Dominican Republic, prized for its robust flavor and aroma, . . . in the form of nibs, or crushed, roasted beans, . . . incorporated into the brewing process itself.” Weighing in at 8.7% ABV, Chocolate Ale “[harmonizes] the interplay of chocolate and malt, with each supporting and enhancing, but not overwhelming, the other.”

We wanted to update the artwork and make it a little more special as this beer is a limited release that leads up to Valentine’s Day, often being a beer used to celebrate the occasion. The previous design heavily played into the unwrapping of a chocolate bar, so I tried to keep that general vibe while making the design more sophisticated and fancy, especially since this is a collaboration with Christopher Elbow and they are known for delicious and beautifully crafted chocolate offerings.

The gold pattern in the background of the diamond label is a direct nod to the designs that decorate some of the gorgeous chocolates made by the Elbow team. The update to the typography is meant to reinforce the smoothness and chocolate aspects of the beer while elevating the brand and allowing this to be a special gift item.”

– Eric McLaughlin, Graphic Designer at Boulevard Brewing Co.

Boulevard Brewing Co. Breaks Out the Good Stuff, Releases Imperial Cask Cuvée

Boulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, Missouri) has officially announced that it will begin the Limited Release of Imperial Cask Cuvée, an artful blend of five different Imperial Stouts aged in five different barrels, on December 7, 2020.

Meant to capture the full meaning of the word “cuvée” (a signature release featuring “a blend of only the best barrels”), Imperial Cask Cuvée is an Imperial Stout comprised of a “unique blend of 18% Templeton Rye Whiskey Barrels, 23% Madeira Wine Barrels, and 59% Buffalo Trace, Basil Hayden’s, and Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrels.” Weighing in at an impressive 13.8% ABV, Imperial Cask Cuvée comes together to be “a big boozy imperial stout with flavors of vanilla, smoky stone fruit, and a variety of oaky tannin realness.”

“The idea for this beer is taking the finest stouts that we’ve made in the past and blending them up to make the best stout/beer possible. Blending is how Steven and I believe you make good stouts: from the layering of different flavors. You get more nuances or textures of flavors from blending, and that’s why we are combining recipes. Some have more chocolate flavors while others are thicker or higher in alcohol. We’re finding the balance in the chaos of extreme beers. The different types of wood aging also leads to more complexity, helping round out the malt flavors with the oak aromas and tannins, where bourbon is heavily charred, the rye is sweet, and the Madeira and port are sweet and very fruity.”
– Ryan McNeive, Lead Brewer of Boulevard’s barrel-aging program

Imperial Cask Cuvée is scheduled to hit the Kansas City area on December 7 with expanded distribution to follow shortly after that date. You can expect to find this Limited Release available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles at select craft beer-friendly establishments in Missouri and other select markets located within Boulevard’s distribution territory. Boulevard Brewing Co. Introduces Manhattan Social Club as Latest Limited Release

Boulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, Missouri) has officially announced that it will begin the Limited Release of Manhattan Social Club during the week of July 6, 2020.

Meticulously crafted with the help of local bartenders to capture all the nuances found within the ingredients – rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, bitters and a cherry – used to create a classic Manhattan cocktail, the barrel team at Boulevard Brewing set the foundation of Manhattan Social Club with an Imperial Rye Ale to “mimic the rye whiskey and give it the necessary spicy rye note.” The bitters were recreated with “a heady combination of spices” that were added during both the brewing process and in the barrel, and the added cherry was achieved by adding . . . you know . . . cherry. The beer then went on to be 100% barrel-aged in “a variety of different rye whiskey barrels” with the addition of plum purée to infuse a character similar to that of sweet vermouth. Coming in at sip-worthy 12.5% ABV, the finished Manhattan Social Club “has an underlying sweetness that dances below the spicy and herbal notes, truly reconstructing the flavors of the original” Manhattan.

Manhattan Social Club will debut in the Kansas City area during the week of July 6 and will enter expanded distribution shortly after that date. You can expect to find this Limited Release available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles at craft beer-friendly establishments located in Missouri and select markets located within Boulevard Brewing Co.’s distribution territory. Boulevard Brewing’s Saison Brett Makes Annual Return

Saison-Brett-Diamond-BadgeBoulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, Missouri) has officially announced that it will begin the Limited Release of its iconic Saison Brett on Monday, April 30.

Annually brewed since 2008 and one of the “most coveted beers” to come out of Boulevard’s Smokestack Series, Saison Brett starts life as an “assertively dry-hopped” version of the brewery’s Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale.  To set it apart from its cousin, the brewers then inoculate Saison Brett with Champagne yeast and “brettanomyces bruxellensis in a bottling tank designated to holding funky/sour beers.”  After it is bottled and spends “12+ weeks in the bottle conditioning area”, the finished Saison Brett (8.5% ABV) emerges to treat its drinker to “suggestions of forest floor, earthy funk and tropical fruit that mingle with fruity Belgian yeast esters, peppery phenolic notes and citrusy hops.”  Saison Brett can be enjoyed fresh or it can be cellared to “allow the brettanomyces character to develop and intensify.”

This year’s batch of Saison Brett will officially debut in the Greater Kansas City Area on April 30 and expanded distribution will follow “in the coming weeks.”  You can expect to find this Limited Release available in 750ml bottles and on draft at select craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Missouri and other areas in Boulevard Brewing Co.’s distribution footprint “that typically see Smokestack Series Limited Release beers like Rye on Rye on Rye and Love Child blends.”  Prost!

Boulevard Brewing Co. Resurrects Rye on Rye

BoulevardRyeonRyeBoulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, Missouri) has announced that Rye on Rye will make a triumphant, limited return to the Smokestack Series in January.

First released in 2010, Rye on Rye was given a brief break from production back in 2015 so that Boulevard Brewing Co. could spend a couple years exploring experimental spin-offs such as Rye on Rye on Rye and Rye on Rye – Classic Sazerac Cocktail. Those beers were fantastic, but many beer fans were left longing for the original Templeton Rye barrel-aged version.  The folks at the brewery heard the calls asking for Rye on Rye’s return and are happy to report that it is officially ready for release this month.

To create this study in rye, Boulevard’s brewers start by brewing a “sturdy” base beer “composed of . . . two row base malt layered with German rye, English crystal rye, Cara 50 and Munich malt and then accented with brown sugar, dark brown sugar and dark candi syrup.”  After being hopped with Magnum, Citra and Styrian Golding hops and fermented with a Scottish Ale yeast, that beer is then transferred to “freshly emptied Templeton Rye barrels” so that it can age “from six to 18 months.”  Once the aging process is all said and done, “optimal barrels are selected and blended with 33% fresh beer to create a delicate balance between spicy, slightly boozy rye whiskey barrel characters and the base beer.”  Those that partake in the finished Rye on Rye can expect a warming (12% ABV), medium bodied experience characterized by notes of “spicy, fruity” rye malt, rye whiskey, vanilla, toffee, charred oak, caramel, and balancing hop tones that are “earthy, herbal, citrusy.”

Rye on Rye will first launch in the Kansas City area on January 8 and other regions will follow “in the coming weeks.”  Once it does hit wide distribution, you can expect to find this Limited Release available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles, 750ml bottles and on draft at select craft beer establishments located in areas that normally see Smokestack Series Limited Release beers from Boulevard Brewing Co.  Prost!

Boulevard Brewing Adjusts Packaging for Smokestack Series

hammerpress-brewery-posterBoulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, Missouri) has officially announced that several of its most popular Smokestack Series beers will get an upgrade from 4-packs to 6-packs in the coming weeks.

The good folks at Boulevard Brewing Co. recently conducted a quiet market test and discovered that many of their fans would prefer to purchase the brewery’s more established Smokestack Series offerings in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles rather than the currently available 4-packs.  After running the numbers and talking it over with retailers, the brewery has agreed that the change just makes sense. The affected beers are as follows:

  • The Calling IPA – “The Calling is an undeniable IPA we were driven to make. It’s our tribute to like-minded dreamers, adventurous spirits, and glass half-full optimists. It’s also our most heavily hopped beer ever, bursting forth with unmistakable tropical fruit and pine hop aromas and flavor supported with a slightly sweet malt character, tapering to a crisp, dry finish. Heed your call and enjoy.”  ABV – 8.5%  IBUs – 75
  • Dark Truth Stout – “Throughout the ages, man has been fascinated by the quest for hidden knowledge, the search for the secret to transforming the elemental into the extraordinary, the simple into the sublime. Ladies and gentlemen, we present for your consideration this exotic, inky concoction, the almost magical creation of our modern day alchemists who have turned humble grains—barley, wheat, rye, and oats—into black, liquid gold. Layers of complex flavors slowly emerge from the glass: espresso, roasted fig, crème brulée. Belgian yeast provides a plum-like fruitiness, noble German hops reveal spicy, herbal notes, while the rich, velvety mouthfeel mellows to a dry, smoky finish.”  ABV – 9.7%  IBUs – 60
  • The Sixth Glass Quadrupel Ale – “‘Do you know what dwells in a glass?’ asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass…”  ABV – 10.5%  IBUs – 22
  • Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale – “When our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in fermenter number seven. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.”  ABV – 8.5%  IBUs – 38

“We tested the idea in a few markets and confirmed our suspicion that consumers enjoy getting two more bottles of their favorite Smokestack beers for what ends up being a lower price per bottle,” said Bobby Dykstra, Boulevard’s vice president of sales. “It makes sense for our retail partners as well, aligning our portfolio from both pricing and space management perspectives.”

6-packs of The Calling IPA, Dark Truth Stout, The Sixth Glass and Tank 7 will begin rolling out in October, and the brewery expects that these “Smokestack Series six-packs will generally carry the same retail price as four-packs of its year-round barrel-aged beers, Bourbon Barrel Quad and Whiskey Barrel Stout.”  Once released, you can expect to find these new 6-packs at craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Missouri and throughout the rest of Boulevard Brewing Co.’s distribution footprint.  Prost!
