Brewery Ommengang Launches New Series of Canned Sour Ales

OmmeganglogoBlackBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) has officially announced that it will expand on its Sour Series in April with the release of three Sour Ales in cans – Apripêche, Solera and Rosetta.

In a move that will act as the latest step in the “exciting evolution” of the brewery’s wildly popular and highly respected lineup of Sour Ales, Brewery Ommegang has decided to give the following “trio of eminently drinkable beers” an upgrade by making them more conveniently accessible in 12 oz. cans (descriptions and quotes sourced directly from the brewery’s press release):

  • ApripêcheThe newcomer, Apripêche, combines a quaffable Belgian-style witbier with peaches, apricots, and just the right amount of a tart Flemish golden ale. The delicious result is an artful interplay of sweet nectar, hazy refreshment, and wine-like acidity.
“We’ve experimented with stone fruit sours for a long time,” says our brewmaster Phil Leinhart. “Apripêche blends the juicy sweetness of peaches and the delicate acidity of apricots, resulting in a beer that pairs perfectly with a variety of lighter, warm weather dishes.”
  • Solera – Formerly known as Pale Sour, a tart golden ale crafted by Liefmans, Ommegang’s sister blendery in Belgium. A mixed-culture fermentation in open copper vats is followed by months of aging. Similar in approach to the classic “solera method” of blending liquids of varying ages, master blenders regularly mix new batches with older ones to achieve the perfect balance of sweet and sour.
“Our most popular sour is perfect for sipping in the sun, so when we resolved to release it in cans, we decided that Solera was a better name,” says Leinhart. “This beer is truly sunshine in a glass.”
  • Rosetta – Ommegang’s year-round kriek ale, moves from bottles to cans to complete the set. A charming combination of Oud Bruin, a tart Flemish brown ale, and Cuvée Brut, a cheerful cherry beer, Rosetta offers elegance, depth, complexity and an intriguing interplay of tartness and sweetness.

Apripêche, Solera and Rosetta will all be available Year-Round in 4-packs of 12 oz. cans beginning in April 2020 (draft availability will begin “when on-premise establishments reopen”).  Locations for the first shipments of these three offerings are listed below.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Adds Idyll Days Pilsner to Year-Round Portfolio

OmmegangLogoCompleteBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) has officially announced that it will launch Idyll Days Pilsner as its newest Year-Round offering in March 2020.

Developed over a two-year period to be Brewery Ommegang’s “signature version of [a] time-honored style,” Idyll Days is an unfiltered Belgian-style Pilsner that employs “authentic floor-malted barley from the Czech Republic to impart earthier, more rustic flavors than are often found in pilsners, and the beer is fermented with a Belgian lager yeast to give it a cleaner profile with fewer sulfur notes.”  To balance the experience, Czech Saaz hops “lend delicate, floral aromas, enhanced by sweet notes of fresh grain.” After conditioning for 30 days, Idyll Days Pilsner (5% ABV) comes together to offer its drinker a “mature beer with smooth drinkability.”

“This beer is glorious in its simplicity, but it is hardly simple to make,” said Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang. “Every ingredient of Idyll Days was carefully selected to deliver a beer that’s more than the sum of its parts. We hope it encourages fans to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures of life while enjoying a glass with friends.”

Idyll Days Pilsner debuted at Brewery Ommegang on February 21 and is scheduled to enter distribution on March 1.  You can expect to find this new Year-Round offering available on draft nationwide and in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans on the East Coast.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Introduces Saisonztraminer as Latest Co-Fermentation Project

OmmegangLogoCompleteBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) has officially announced that it will begin the Limited Release of Saisonztraminer, the newest creation to come out of the brewery’s Co-Fermentation Project, on July 12.

Like all Co-Fermentation Projects from Brewery Ommegang, Saisonztraminer is a creative offering that “explores the interaction of grapes and grain, aspiring to achieve a blend that surpasses the sum of its parts.”  To reach this goal, Saisonztraminer begins its journey as a “delicate Farmhouse Saison” that goes on to have its “wort . . . blended with Gewürztraminer grape juice and then co-fermented using the brewery’s Belgian house yeast.”  This approach yields a “beer with all the peppery phenols and lively effervescence of a traditional Saison, but with flavors of rose petals, lychee fruit and honeysuckle, and vinous minerality that would be impossible to achieve without co-fermentation.” Coming in at 6.7% ABV, the finished Saisonztraminer truly “[blurs] the line between brewing and winemaking.”

“Each release co-ferments a blend of traditionally brewed wort and the juice of wine grapes, with fermentation often followed by a period of aging in oak wine barrels,” explains Brewmaster Phil Leinhart. “Our hope is to surprise even the most discerning palates, expanding expectations of what beer can be.”

Saisonztraminer will debut at Brewery Ommegang on July 12 and distribution is scheduled to follow shortly after the on-site release.  You can expect to find this Limited Release offering available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at select craft beer-friendly establishments located in Florida, New York and other select markets found within the brewery’s nationwide distribution network.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Plans to Launch Saison Rosé This Summer

brewery-ommegang-logoBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) has officially announced that it too is getting on the rosé train this summer with the Limited Release of Saison Rosé.

To create their own riff on a rosé-inspired beer, the folks at Ommegang begin by taking a “delicate” saison brewed with hibiscus flowers and send it “to stainless steel fermenters for a co-fermentation with chardonnay grape juice.”  While that magic is happening, a second, “heartier version of the saison base” is lying in wait in oak barrels so that it can “develop subtle tannic notes.”  The two Saisons are then “masterfully” blended to result in a pale red Saison Rosé (7.7% ABV) that offers “aromas of grapefruit and red berries . . .  followed by a hint of oak” and “flavors of sweet berries and lightly-tart citrus [that resolve] to subtle oak tannins and spicy Belgian yeast.”

“At Ommegang, we’ve been blending beers for many years, starting with Three Philosophers in 2002. This is an area where we’ve been spending a lot of time experimenting lately, and I’m particularly excited about this release, just in time for the summer,” says brewmaster Phil Leinhart.

Saison Rosé is scheduled to release in June and has plans to hang around through the summer months.  You can expect to find this Limited Release available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at select craft beer establishments located in Florida, New York and throughout the rest of Brewery Ommegang’s distribution network.  Prost!
