Brewery Ommegang Releases Limited Edition Smoked Porter

OmmegangSP4pk_editedBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) has officially announced that Ommegang Smoked Porter is hitting shelves and taps now as the brewery’s latest Limited Edition offering.

Created as “a nod” to the classic English-style beer, Ommegang Smoked Porter is “brewed with subtle additions of smoked malt and a touch of Saaz hops to add additional depth and character to an otherwise traditional English brew.”  This approach yields a medium to full bodied, deep dark brown Smoked Porter with aromatic and flavor notes of rich cocoa, burnt sugar, roasted malt, sweet caramel, and subtle smoke.  Although this offering may be a bit of a departure from the brewery’s more Belgian-focused beers, Ommegang Smoked Porter’s “characteristic aromas of chocolate malt along with caramelized sugar are reminiscent of many things Belgian, and of all things good.”

Ommegang Smoked Porter is available now for a limited time in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft.  You can find this Limited Edition brew at fine beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, New York, and throughout the rest of Brewery Ommegang’s distribution area.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Celebrates 20 Years with Release of 20th Anniversary Ale

20th-Anniv-BottleGlassTube-763x1024Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) recently announced that it is celebrating two decades of brewing with the limited release of 20th Anniversary Ale.

Ever since it was founded in 1997, Brewery Ommegang has been brewing with the goal of creating “beautiful, imaginative Belgian-style ales blended with a touch of American innovation.”  Staying true to the brewing philosophy that got them here, Ommegang’s brewers are marking their twenty-year milestone with 20th Anniversary Ale, a classic Belgian-style brew that has been given an “American twist” of bourbon barrel aging.

The base beer for this offering is a Belgian-style Strong Dark Ale that has been built with four malts (Munich, Special B, Cara-Vienne, and Blackprinz), a “balanced hopping” with Spalter Select and Styrian Golding hops, and an addition of Belgian candi sugar.  Once the beer finished fermentation, it was then “aged for more than five months” in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels.  This all results in a rich, full-bodied 20th Anniversary Ale that is “mildly sweet” in flavor “with notes of caramel and molasses mingling with hints of bourbon and oak.”

“Twenty years ago, our founders built Brewery Ommegang with a simple purpose: to use Belgian-inspired brewing to elevate the entire conversation about craft beer in this country,” remarks our president, Doug Campbell. “Today, two decades later, with the release of this beer, we honor their legacy while at the very same time we continue to pursue it every day.”

20th Anniversary Ale is hitting shelves now and will hang around while supplies last.  You can expect to find this Limited Release offering available in 750ml bottles at select beer establishments located in Florida, Georgia, New York and throughout the rest of Brewery Ommegang’s distribution area.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Releases Pale Sour Ale as New Year-Round

ommeganglogoBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) recently announced that they have expanded their Core Lineup with the addition of Pale Sour Ale.

To ensure that this mixed fermentation sour beer was worthy of becoming the newest Year-Round offering from Brewery Ommegang, Brewmaster Phil Leinhart and the master blenders at Brewery LiefmansOmmegang’s sister brewery located in Oudenaarde, Belgium – spent a great deal of time together developing the recipe and process for Pale Sour Ale.  This brewing brain trust decided to ferment this offering in open copper vats, age it for several months in stainless steel tanks, and then “blend new batches with older ones until the optimal balance of flavors is reached.”  Their efforts result in a 6.9% ABV American Sour Ale “that drinks much like a fine white wine” thanks to a flavor profile that displays “an elegant interplay of sweet and sour.”

“Pale Sour is an elegant, drinkable sour beer, unique in that it’s not wood-aged. It has a well-balanced blend of sweet and sour. Liefmans is such a historic, iconic brewery and having the opportunity to work with them has been an honor and very enjoyable.”

– Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang

Tasting Notes: Lovely, Dark & Deep from Brewery Ommegang

“. . . The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.”

from “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost

lddommegangbottle_editedTasting Notes comfortably eases us into the work week with a look at Lovely, Dark and Deep Oatmeal Stout from Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York).

It is not too often that I get to combine my loves of great beer and fine literature, but Brewery Ommegang has more than accommodated this quirky/nerdy need of mine by creating Lovely, Dark and Deep Oatmeal Stout.  With a name inspired by the final stanza of Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, this Oatmeal Stout serves as a Winter Seasonal that is more than capable of warming the hearts and souls of even the weariest of travelers.  This limited release has been brewed with a rich blend of malts, lactose, Ommegang’s signature house yeast, and Bravo and Styrian Golding hops.  At just 5.3% ABV, this offering proves to be a fantastic go-to option no matter what kind of winter you are forced to endure.  Lovely, Dark and Deep Oatmeal Stout is available for a limited time in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft.  If you are interested, you can still find this one on shelves and taps at select craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of Brewery Ommegang’s distribution network.

With all of that background information covered, I do believe it is time to crack open a book, pour a glass and get to some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Lovely, Dark and Deep Oatmeal Stout from Brewery Ommegang

Appearance: Lovely, Dark and Deep fills the tulip glass as a dark black, completely opaque beer that is wearing over two fingers of mocha colored foam.  Held to direct light, the color softens just a shade to the darkest of browns possible and has a deep red glow residing at the very bottom of the glass.  The head has incredible staying power, eventually falling to a creamy half finger only because of the huge amount of lace it leaves behind after each sip.

Aroma: The beer grabs your attention quickly with an initial aromatic pop filled with rich notes of oats and other grains.  These malts captivate with a deeply roasted, nearly charred character.  Once the malts invite you in, notes of dark chocolate, coffee and toasted multi-grain bread quickly emerge to greet the nose.  Dark fruit, a dash of anise, and just a breath of light smoke rounds off the profile.  Proudly robust, this beer’s aroma absolutely sets the tone for the experience ahead.

Taste: We have a new development here and it is Belgian yeast.  Mingling with the dark malts, this yeast character softly presents itself with light qualities of spice, licorice, prune and plum.  This works gorgeously with the style’s expected notes of hearty grains, cocoa and roasted coffee.  The beer finishes with a bit of cream to impart just a touch of sweet vanilla.  All of these notes fit snugly together to make each sip extraordinarily flavorful.

Mouthfeel: This Oatmeal Stout falls on the fuller side of medium in body with a lifting carbonation presence.  The beer is delightfully silken and creamy on the palate, and it ultimately dries out quite nicely.  At just 5.3%, the ABV plays no role in this beer and keeps the experience incredibly easy-drinking.  The aftertaste leaves behind a touch of chocolate milk and earthy yeast character.

Final Thoughts: After spending quite a bit of time enjoying this beer while re-reading “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, Lovely, Dark and Deep Oatmeal Stout has proven to be a wonderfully brewed ode to the poem for which it has been named.  On the surface, this offering stays true to its obligations to the style by showcasing notes of roasted malts, coffee and cocoa. The brewers clearly paid close attention here, stopping to recognize and appreciate the beauty found in the Oatmeal Stouts that have come before this one.  With that responsibility more than adequately satisfied, they then dug a little deeper by using Ommegang’s signature house yeast.  This seemingly minor change is all that is needed for the beer to take its own form and make a name for itself.  Something distinguishable and willing to push beyond what is known.  Something that strongly affirms, “This is undoubtedly Ommegang.”  Something not to be forgotten.  Simply put, Lovely, Dark and Deep is an eloquently composed, artfully crafted Oatmeal Stout that just cannot be missed.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Introduces Siren’s Song

ommegang_secondary_logo_greyscaleBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) has officially announced the release of Siren’s Song Dark Ale as their newest Limited Edition offering.

“Named for the enchanting melodies that fabled sirens used to lure in weary sailors,” the Siren’s Song of Brewery Ommegang takes the form of an enchanting Belgian-style Dark Ale brewed with figs and raisins.  This offering begins with a base of Belgian candi syrup, Noble hop varieties, and Pilsner, Midnight Wheat and Soft Red Wheat malts. Figs and raisins were then incorporated in the brewing process for added complexity and to “represent cargo lost to the sea because of the bewitching sirens’ songs.” With dark fruit and roasted malt aromas, this mahogany colored ale boasts a flavor that “begins with sweetness and caramel notes and finishes smooth with lingering hints of caramelized sugar and balanced bitterness.”

“Belgian-style dark ales are a treat to drink,” says Innovation Manager Justin Forsythe, who developed the recipe. “Sirens’ Song is brewed with dark Belgian candi syrup to impart decadent notes of dark fruit and burnt sugar, and also brewed with raisins and figs in order to compliment the rich, fruity character of this dark ale. It’s a wonderful wintertime treat, or a beer to age for years to come.”

Siren’s Song has officially started shipping out to Florida and the rest of Brewery Ommegang’s distribution area.  This offering will be available for a limited time in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft.  If you are a lover of fine Belgian-style beers, follow the Siren’s Song to your favorite craft beer establishment and give this one a try while you can.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Releases Game of Thrones Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale

gotvalar2bottlesBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) and HBO Global Licensing recently announced that Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale has been officially released as the latest offering in the brewery’s series of Game of Thrones-inspired beers.

With a name that any Game of Thrones fan will tell you means “All Men Must Serve” in High Valyrian, Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale is a new offering from Ommegang that “pays homage to Arya’s season-long struggles within and around the House of Black and White.”  This Belgian-style Tripel was “brewed with pils, wheat and oats, flaked barley, and hopped with noble hops.” Presenting itself as copper in color, this Tripel boasts aromatics of “sweet grain and honey” which support a bright, sweet flavor thanks to the use of Belgian candi sugar during the brewing process.  Although the beer weighs in at 9% ABV, it remains relatively easy drinking and finishes “moderately dry and effervescent.”

Originally released by Ommegang back in 2014, Valar Morghulis Belgian-style Dubbel means “All Men Must Die” and acts as the sister brew to Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale.  Since “Valar Dohaeris” is the traditional answer to the phrase “Valar Morghulis,” it was obvious to the brewery that they had to resurrect this Dubbel to join Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale during its release.  You will be able to find both of these offerings in a collectible gift pack containing a 750ml bottle of each beer along with a commemorative glass.

“Of the classic Belgian styles, the dubbel and the tripel are two of our favorites to brew, and both are styles we’re particularly well known for,” says Ommegang Brewmaster Phil Leinhart. “I love the idea of releasing them together side-by-side. It is such a great way to experience them. They are also pretty hearty and should age nicely over time, so fans can stock up to last them through the winter and to fill the void until next season.”

Bottles of Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale officially released at the brewery on Saturday, October 8.  The beer will then be released within Ommegang’s full distribution footprint (includes Alabama and Florida) starting on Monday, October 10.  If you are interested in tracking this one down, look for it to be available at craft beer friendly establishments on draft, in 750ml single bottles for the suggested retail price of $9.99, and in the collectible gift pack mentioned above for the suggested retail price of $22.99.  These Game of Thrones beers have proven to be wildly popular with each and every release, so be sure to secure your bottles whenever you happen upon them.  Prost!

Arya spent most of Season 6 in Braavos training to become a faceless assassin, making the naming of the latest beer and the decision to re-release Valar Morghulis a no-brainer.”
