Brewery Ommegang Introduces Fruittanomyces as New Limited Release

OmmegangLogoCompleteBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) has announced that Fruittanomyces, a dry-hopped Witbier brewed with tropical fruits and aged with Brettanomyces, is hitting shelves now as the brewery’s latest Limited Release.

To create this “funky, flavorful limited edition beer”, the brewers at Ommegang start with a Witbier base that is “brewed with malted and unmalted wheat and oat flakes and is spiced with sweet orange peel and coriander.”  This Witbier then takes an interesting turn off its classic path by being “fermented with mango, kiwi, and passion fruit juices and dry-hopped with Citra and Cascade hops before aging in the bottle with Brettanomyces.”  With all these steps completed, Fruittanomyces emerges with a complex aroma dominated by “tropical fruit and overripe funk” and “tart flavors of ripe pineapple, passion fruit and kumquat [leading] to subdued hints of lemony citrus.”  Coming in at just 5.3% ABV, Fruittanomyces offers an experience that is “effervescent and surprisingly refreshing with a lingering sweetness on the finish.”

Fruittanomyces is rolling out now and will be around as long as supplies last.  You can expect to find this Limited Edition beer available in 750ml bottles at craft beer-focused retailers located in Alabama, Florida, New York and throughout the rest of Brewery Ommegang’s distribution area.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Adds Mother of Dragons to Game of Thrones Royal Reserve Collection

Mother-of-Dragons_SM-1024x1024Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) and HBO Licensing & Retail have officially announced plans to unleash Mother of Dragons, a blend of Smoked Porter and Belgian Kriek, on September 28 as the third offering in their collaborative Royal Reserve Collection inspired by the award-winning drama Game of Thrones.

Created to honor Daenerys Targaryen and her motivation to take “what is hers with fire and blood”, Mother of Dragons blends Smoked Porter with Kriek to embody “the smoke and fire that Daenerys has unleashed on her opponents.”  This dynamic combination produces “a deep ruby-tinted mahogany” colored brew that offers “aromas of chocolate covered cherries . . . subtle smoke and roasted malt.”  This carries over into the flavor profile with “tart cherry up front leading to a center palate of semi-sweet chocolate then resolving to subtle smoke and mild sweetness.”  Mother of Dragons comes in at 6.5% ABV and offers a “luxuriously creamy and full” mouthfeel.

“Mother of Dragons represents in beer one of our favorite characters from Game of Thrones. Daenerys’s ascent from obscurity has been one of the most inspiring storylines of the show, and we’re thrilled to release a blend that embodies the character traits that have underpinned that rise,” said Doug Campbell, Brewery Ommegang president.

Brewery Ommegang Plans to Launch Saison Rosé This Summer

brewery-ommegang-logoBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) has officially announced that it too is getting on the rosé train this summer with the Limited Release of Saison Rosé.

To create their own riff on a rosé-inspired beer, the folks at Ommegang begin by taking a “delicate” saison brewed with hibiscus flowers and send it “to stainless steel fermenters for a co-fermentation with chardonnay grape juice.”  While that magic is happening, a second, “heartier version of the saison base” is lying in wait in oak barrels so that it can “develop subtle tannic notes.”  The two Saisons are then “masterfully” blended to result in a pale red Saison Rosé (7.7% ABV) that offers “aromas of grapefruit and red berries . . .  followed by a hint of oak” and “flavors of sweet berries and lightly-tart citrus [that resolve] to subtle oak tannins and spicy Belgian yeast.”

“At Ommegang, we’ve been blending beers for many years, starting with Three Philosophers in 2002. This is an area where we’ve been spending a lot of time experimenting lately, and I’m particularly excited about this release, just in time for the summer,” says brewmaster Phil Leinhart.

Saison Rosé is scheduled to release in June and has plans to hang around through the summer months.  You can expect to find this Limited Release available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at select craft beer establishments located in Florida, New York and throughout the rest of Brewery Ommegang’s distribution network.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Set for Limited Release of Double Barrel Dubbel

DBDbottleBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) has officially announced that Double Barrel Dubbel will arrive at the end of April as the brewery’s latest Limited Release offering.

Brewed as a nod to Brewery Ommegang’s first beer, Double Barrel Dubbel starts with a base of Ommegang Abbey Ale that is similarly spiced with orange peel, coriander, cumin, star anise, and licorice root.  Once the brewing process is completed, the beer then “gracefully ages for six months in a mix of bourbon and brandy casks in the brewery’s cellar.” This treatment results in a final blend that boasts a flavor profile of “caramel, raisin, and plums [mixing] nicely with underlying flavors of oak, bourbon, and subtle hints of dried fruit and vanilla.”  Double Barrel Dubbel weighs in at 9.9% ABV.

“As we’ve expanded our barrel-aging program, we’ve experimented with some of our favorite core beers, trying different barrels, and combinations of barrels, to create something new with beers we already enjoy. We thought the combination of bourbon and brandy for Abbey Ale was a great one and we’re pleased to share Double Barrel Dubbel with fans.”

Brewery Ommegang Plans to Release Game of Thrones Royal Reserve Collection

Hand-of-the-Queen-445x1024Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) and HBO Global Licensing have announced that they will commemorate the final season of Game of Thrones with the release of Hand of the Queen Barleywine Ale in April as the first installment in the Royal Reserve Collection.

To ensure that you experience the final episodes of HBO’s Game of Thrones series with the perfect beers in hand, Brewery Ommegang has established the Royal Reserve Collection to be “a collectible series of four special, limited release beers, each designed and brewed as an homage to one of four epic figures in the battle for the Seven Kingdoms.”  Each of these beers “will be brewed and blended with ingredients selected to match the character and temperament of the chosen hero, designed and brewed as Brewery Ommegang’s interpretation of what a royal brewer might brew for his or her noble master.”

The first release in the Royal Reserve Collection will be Hand of the Queen, a beer brewed for Tyrion Lannister.  Widely respected for his ability to “drink and know things”, the wine-loving Tyrion will be properly honored with a “a big, bold barleywine, a beer fit for those who seek knowledge and truth, both great and small.”  Clocking in at 11% ABV, the malt-forward Hand of the Queen Barleywine Ale is “an old-world example of the style” that is characterized by notes of brandy-soaked raisins, dark fruit, apricots, molasses and toffee.

“While technically not royalty at all, Tyrion certainly qualifies as a nobleman in our esteem,” says Doug Campbell, President of Brewery Ommegang. “We’ve wanted to brew for Tyrion for six seasons, and we believe his time has come. Knowing his preferences, our beer for Tyrion could only be a barleywine.”

As noted above, Hand of the Queen will be the first of four releases in the Royal Reserve Collection.  The remaining three releases will arrive in July, October, and December of 2018.  The names and details for those future beers will be made available as their release dates draw closer.

Hand of the Queen will officially release in April with availability in 750ml bottles (suggested retail price of $12.99 each) and on draft.  A list of distribution states will be made available in March of 2018, and we will update you with that information just as soon as we have it.  Prost!

Brewery Ommegang Introduces Candi Stout

CandiStoutCakeBrewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) recently announced that it has officially initiated the one-time, limited release of Candi Stout.

Expanding upon their “mission to blend the artistry of Belgian brewing traditions with a typically non-Belgian beer style”, the brewers at Ommegang have developed Candi Stout as an amalgamation “of a Belgian-style dark ale and a traditional stout.”  This was achieved by brewing a “deep, dark black” Stout with “rich roasted malts . . ., Belgian candi sugar, bittersweet cocoa nibs, and a special strain of Belgian ale yeast.”  This combination produces an aroma of “dark chocolate and cocoa . . . with subtle hints of dark fruit and spicy yeast”, and a flavor profile that “opens with mild sweetness, giving way to rich chocolate, and mild roast.”  Despite the beer’s complexity, this all rides on a “smooth body and finish” thanks to “the use of Belgian yeast and the extra dose of fermentables from candi syrup.”  This all results in a 6.7% ABV Candi Stout that boasts “impressive drinkability.”

“Candi Stout is unique in that the dark candi sugar lessens the body a bit and reduces the need for higher amounts of roasted grains so the beer drinks slightly lighter and less roasted than a typical stout. This is a great beer for the cold months ahead, and we’re as excited to share this new beer with fans as we are to drink it this winter.”

– Phil Leinhart, Brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang

Candi Stout officially started its “one-time” release on December 23 at Brewery Ommegang.  These 750ml bottles will also see limited distribution during “the month of January in Wegmans, Total Wine, and Costco stores in the eastern part of the United States.”  For those of you outside of that area, there is no need to fret because Candi Stout will also see nationwide distribution on draft in March.  Prost!

Created as “a nod” to the classic English-style beer, Ommegang Smoked Porter is “brewed with subtle additions of smoked malt and a touch of Saaz hops to add additional depth and character to an otherwise traditional English brew.”  This approach yields a medium to full bodied, deep dark brown Smoked Porter with aromatic and flavor notes of rich cocoa, burnt sugar, roasted malt, sweet caramel, and subtle smoke.  Although this offering may be a bit of a departure from the brewery’s more Belgian-focused beers, Ommegang Smoked Porter’s “characteristic aromas of chocolate malt along with caramelized sugar are reminiscent of many things Belgian, and of all things good.”

Brewery Ommegang Celebrates 20 Years with Release of 20th Anniversary Ale

20th-Anniv-BottleGlassTube-763x1024Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) recently announced that it is celebrating two decades of brewing with the limited release of 20th Anniversary Ale.

Ever since it was founded in 1997, Brewery Ommegang has been brewing with the goal of creating “beautiful, imaginative Belgian-style ales blended with a touch of American innovation.”  Staying true to the brewing philosophy that got them here, Ommegang’s brewers are marking their twenty-year milestone with 20th Anniversary Ale, a classic Belgian-style brew that has been given an “American twist” of bourbon barrel aging.

The base beer for this offering is a Belgian-style Strong Dark Ale that has been built with four malts (Munich, Special B, Cara-Vienne, and Blackprinz), a “balanced hopping” with Spalter Select and Styrian Golding hops, and an addition of Belgian candi sugar.  Once the beer finished fermentation, it was then “aged for more than five months” in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels.  This all results in a rich, full-bodied 20th Anniversary Ale that is “mildly sweet” in flavor “with notes of caramel and molasses mingling with hints of bourbon and oak.”

“Twenty years ago, our founders built Brewery Ommegang with a simple purpose: to use Belgian-inspired brewing to elevate the entire conversation about craft beer in this country,” remarks our president, Doug Campbell. “Today, two decades later, with the release of this beer, we honor their legacy while at the very same time we continue to pursue it every day.”

20th Anniversary Ale is hitting shelves now and will hang around while supplies last.  You can expect to find this Limited Release offering available in 750ml bottles at select beer establishments located in Florida, Georgia, New York and throughout the rest of Brewery Ommegang’s distribution area.  Prost!
