Stone Brewing Welcomes Xocoveza Back for the Holidays

70_stone_social_171003Stone Brewing (Escondido, California) recently announced that their fan-favorite Stone Xocoveza, a Mexican hot chocolate-inspired Imperial Stout, has officially returned for a limited run during the holiday season.

To ensure that only the finest, “expertly sourced, high-quality cacao” makes its way into Stone Xocoveza – a beer that is widely known as “one of the country’s best-selling holiday spiced stouts”, the brewers at Stone Brewing take a “bean to beer” approach.  This process begins by sourcing the cacao directly from Belize, and then those “raw cacao beans are sorted, roasted, de-hulled and ground into chocolate all by hand at Stone Brewing under the tutelage of Belyzium brand cacao grower and chocolate maker Andrei Shibkov.”  These efforts result in a gorgeous cocoa flavor that works beautifully alongside Xocoveza’s
“strong malt bill” and added notes of cinnamon, coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla and nutmeg.  Stone Xocoveza (8.1% ABV) can either be enjoyed fresh or it can be cellared for “months or even years [to] allow the malt character to evolve, making the cocoa and coffee flavors more prevalent.”

“Stone Xocoveza continues to rally our fans into the holiday spirit, but it stands for even more than that here at Stone,” said Greg Koch, Stone Brewing executive chairman & co-founder. “This extraordinary beer dates back to our annual American Homebrewers Association competition of 2014 in which Chris Banker’s original recipe was selected as the winner and first brewed on a national scale. Its powerful flavor profile, innovative recipe and the way in which it lends itself to the use of such high-quality ingredients, make this a winner for us still today.”

Stone Xocoveza is out now and will be available through the 2017 holiday season.  You can find this Seasonal release available in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, California, Virginia and throughout the rest of Stone Brewing’s nationwide distribution footprint.  Prost!

Stone Brewing and Maine Beer Company Collaborate on DaySlayer India Pale Lager

Dayslayer_22oz_Mockup.pngStone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) has announced that they have collaborated with Maine Beer Company (Freeport, Maine) to create and release DaySlayer India Pale Lager, the second offering in Stone’s ongoing heavy metal collaboration series.

After seeking divine inspiration from the gods of heavy metal, brewers from Stone Brewing and Maine Beer Company “teamed up to unleash a mouth-shattering overdrive of palate-destroying hops, fermented with radical Pilsner strains.”  To be known from this day forward as the DaySlayer, “this clean and crisp India Pale Lager has intense bready character before turning sharply bitter with hints of pink peppercorns, ending in a clean, dry finish.”  Although it clocks in at 7.5% ABV and 65 IBUs, metalheads and hopheads alike will find DaySlayer India Pale Lager “deceptively easy to put away and decidedly hard to put down.”  This beer is meant to be enjoyed fresh while listening to “some ear-splitting metal tracks”, and you can do just that by checking out DaySlayer’s official playlist on Spotify.

“With this beer, we found both elements of the traditional lager brewing and IPA hopping techniques really shine through in this beer. It’s a great example of the style,” said Jeremy Moynier, Senior Innovation Brewing Manager at Stone Brewing. “We’ve wanted to work with Maine Beer Company for a long time and are ecstatic to be partnering with such an outstanding brewer of hoppy beers.”

Maine/Stone DaySlayer India Pale Lager officially released on April 10 and will only be around while supplies last.  This limited offering can be found in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at select craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, California, Maine and throughout the rest of Stone Brewing’s national distribution footprint.  Enjoy fresh. Stone Brewing Introduces Jindia Pale Ale, Pataskala Red X IPA Returns

jindiapa_editedStone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) has announced plans to blitz spring with two Seasonal IPA releases in 2017, Stone Jindia Pale Ale and Stone Pataskala Red X IPA.

First up, we have the arrival of Stone Jindia Pale Ale as the newest Stone Imperial Seasonal.  This offering is a Double India Pale Ale that has been “instilled with ginger, juniper berries, lemon peel and lime peel” to mimic the notes you would find in an expertly blended gin.  With a hop bill consisting of Magnum, Cascade and Centennial hops, this special release comes together to display “the hop-forward component of a great IPA and also the complexity of aroma and flavors derived from gin botanicals.”  Stone Jindia Pale Ale is available now on draft and in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles.  This seasonal release can be found at craft beer establishments in Alabama, Florida, and throughout the rest of Stone Brewing’s U.S. distribution footprint.

“Our co-founder, Greg Koch, came up with the idea of an IPA with gin botanicals after we had done the Stone & Sierra Nevada NxS IPA, which had a portion of the beer aged in gin barrels,” said Jeremy Moynier, Senior Innovation Brewing Manager. “Along with hops, we added ginger, juniper berries, lemon peel and lime peel to create a truly unique beer.”

Patasklala_12oz_Print.pngTo bring even more hoppy goodness to spring, Stone Pataskala Red X IPA has returned once again as a Stone Seasonal release.  First brewed in September 2015 as a fundraising beer to support music and arts education programs in the hometown – Pataskala, Ohio – of Stone Brewing Co. co-founder Greg Koch, the popularity of Stone Pataskala Red X IPA only grew when it was given a much wider release in 2016.   Back for its third release, this Red India Pale Ale stays true to its unique recipe by featuring Red X malt, a special German malt variety that “is typically reserved for German amber lagers, Irish red ales and other mildly-hopped beers.”  Although mild is not a descriptor that can be used for the copious amounts of Mosaic, Amarillo and Cascade hops employed in this beer, the “cereal notes and biscuit undertones from the Red X malt” provide an interesting and distinctive balancing character to the herbal, citrus, stone fruit and pine notes sourced from those hops.  Stone Pataskala Red X IPA is also available now in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at restaurants and bars where beers from Stone Brewing Co. are normally found.

“We loved this beer and knew we had to bring it back this year,” said Moynier. “It’s a challenging beer to brew on the big scale with the amount of hops and Red X malt that we use. But I think when you taste it you will know it’s worth the effort! It has a beautiful balance of hops and malt and definitely makes you want to have more than one pint!”

If you have been looking to shake things up when it comes to your selection of IPAs, Stone Jindia Pale Ale and Stone Pataskala Red X IPA are both available now to do just that.  These Seasonal brews will be gone before you know it, so just keep them in mind the next time you hit your local craft beer retailer or bar.  Prost!

Stone Brewing Co. Adds Tangerine Express IPA to Year-Round Lineup

stonetangerineexpressbottle_editedStone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) has officially expanded their Year-Round portfolio with the release of Stone Tangerine Express IPA.

The idea for Stone Tangerine Express IPA originally came about when Steve Gonzalez, Stone Brewing’s Senior Manager of Small Batch Brewing & Innovation, and Jake Karley, Director of Beverages & Special Projects at P.J. Whelihan’s Pub & Restaurant, were tasked to create an original beer to feature at the 2016 Craft Brewers Conference in Philadelphia.  What they came up with was a golden India Pale Ale brewed with eight hop varietals, pureed tangerines, and whole pineapples.  Their creation proved to be a “bright, juicy and tropical” drinking experience where “neither the hops nor the fruit dominate, yet together they create several complex fruit layers, which can only be achieved by brewing with the entire fruit.”  The beer, now known as Stone Tangerine Express IPA, was such a success that Stone Brewing made the very easy decision to add it to their line of Year-Round Releases.

“Together they landed on a beer that is really hoppy but at the same time has incredible fruit flavor, which was achieved by using high-quality, whole fruit,” said Jeremy Moynier, Senior Innovation Brewing Manager. “When I tasted it with our co-founder, Greg Koch, and other members of our leadership and sales team, we loved it so much so that we went back to San Diego to hatch the plan for a future nationwide release. Greg was particularly adamant that this beer should be in our year-round lineup and personally championed it through the process. I love that it’s a great hoppy beer but has just the right amount of fresh fruit with a complex, pithy quality to balance it out.”

Stone Tangerine Express IPA was officially sent into distribution the week of Monday, January 30.  You can expect to find this new Year-Round in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of Stone Brewing’s nationwide distribution area.  It has been widely speculated that fruited American India Pale Ales will grow tremendously in popularity during 2017, and it sounds like Stone Tangerine Express IPA will be a welcomed addition to the mix.  If you are one of the many craft beer fans that have been enjoying this trend, keep Stone Brewing’s newest Year-Round in mind while on your next beer run.  Prost!

Stone Brewing Releases Enjoy By 02.14.17 Chocolate & Coffee IPA

021417_EnjByChoco_12ozPSL_FTo add a little craft beer interest to Valentine’s Day this year, Stone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) has announced the release of Stone Enjoy By 02.14.17 Chocolate & Coffee IPA.

Arriving as a variant from the brewery’s wildly popular Enjoy By IPA Series, Stone Brewing Co. developed Stone Enjoy By 02.14.17 Chocolate & Coffee IPA to be a ” rich, decadent and . . . devastatingly fresh Valentine’s Day pleasure.”  This was achieved by brewing the beer with San Diego Sunrise, a blond roast from Ryan Bros. Coffee.  This “less roasty and more chocolaty” coffee was specifically chosen because “it complements the tropical flavors of the hops, and allows the lemon and orange citrus notes to come through loud and strong.”  Using cocoa beans that were sourced from Belize, the “brewers went ‘Bean to Beer’ incorporating chocolate processed straight from the cocoa bean on-site at Stone Brewing.”  Finally, this beer’s recipe stays true to what the Enjoy By Series is known for by utilizing an intense and lengthy hop bill comprised of twelve varietals – Nugget, Super Galena, Simcoe, Amarillo, Delta, Target, Cascade, Citra, Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and Helga.  This all results in an indulgent Double India Pale that clocks in at 9.4% ABV and 90 IBUs.

“The Brewing Team tested several fruit and chocolate variations before finding just the right flavors to complement the hops of our Stone Enjoy By IPA,” said Jeremy Moynier, senior innovation program manager. “The chocolate and coffee combination we finally hit on was inspired by what we had done recently with Stone Mocha IPA, but here it took on new life with the Stone Enjoy By series. This recipe was brewed specifically to add another layer to go with the complexity of the hops and the result is a very special hop-lovers dream alongside a cup of coffee and a bite of chocolate.”

Stone Enjoy By 02.14.17 Chocolate & Coffee IPA is available now in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles, 22 oz. bottles and on draft.  This limited release can found at craft beer bars, restaurants and retailers in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of Stone Brewing’s U.S. distribution area.  Get it while you can and be sure to drink this one as fresh as possible.  Prost!

Stone Brewing Co. Creates Collaboration Beer with Virginia Breweries and Governor

2016_rva_stout_hero_webStone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) recently announced that they have partnered with Ardent Craft Ales, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe to create the limited release collaboration Give Me Stout or Give Me Death.

Now that their new production brewery in Richmond, Virginia is operational, the folks at Stone Brewing Co. figured they would properly introduce themselves to Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and neighboring breweries Ardent Craft Ales and Hardywood Park Craft Brewery by inviting them over to collaborate on a beer. This motley brew crew put their heads together and decided to create Give Me Stout or Give Me Death as a “cry for resistance against the tyrannical oppression of industrial beer.”  With the foundation of this Imperial Stout being heavily influenced by Stone Brewing’s predilection for assertive, hop-forward beers, the Virginia locals implemented the use of locally sourced raspberries and blackberries to “provide a sweetness to start, followed by fruit tartness that nicely balances” the beer.  To come full circle, all parties involved agreed on the use of Belma hops – a variety that provides berry and citrus notes – late in the brewing process to “complement the Virginia-grown berries, making for an assertive bitterness on the finish alongside the warm flavors of roasted malt.”  Weighing in at a sizeable 9.5% ABV, Give Me Stout or Give Me Death comes together as a steadfast declaration that would make Patrick Henry proud.

“With nearly 160 craft breweries, Virginia’s craft beer industry is booming and thanks to partnerships like this, we can continue to share the Virginia craft beer story not only up and down the East Coast, but across the U.S.,” said Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. “Stone Brewing has built an incredible operation here that is already benefiting the City of Richmond’s economy and its quality of life. Now with its first collaboration with local mainstays, Ardent Craft Ales and Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Stone has created an excellent platform for future partnerships with the Virginia craft beer industry. It was a great honor to contribute to the production of this stout that touts both the history of our Commonwealth and its rich agricultural offerings, and an even greater honor to drink it!”

Give Me Stout or Give Me Death is a limited release that will officially become available on December 12.  You will be able to find this offering in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer establishments in Virginia, Alabama and handful of other select markets within Stone Brewing’s distribution area (mostly East Coast, full list of states available below).  If this sounds like your kind of brew, start checking those bottle shops soon and often because I am certain that this release will not last for long.  Prost!

Stone Brewing Co. Launches Ripper Pale Ale as New Year-Round Offering

rippercan_webStone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) recently announced that Stone Ripper San Diego Pale Ale has officially started rolling out in California as the newest addition to the brewery’s line of Year-Round Releases.

With 20 years of craft brewing in the books and the brewery’s steady expansion across the United States and the Atlantic established, Stone Brewing has added Stone Ripper to their Year-Round lineup as a declaration of their San Diego roots.  Stone Ripper – Australian slang for something especially strong, fine, or good of its kind – is a “San Diego Pale Ale . . . inspired by the coastal surf cultures of SoCal and Oz.”  Brewed with a hop blend of Cascade hops from the Pacific Northwest and Galaxy hops sourced from Australia, this offering provides “fresh orange, pineapple, peach and floral” aromatics and “a balance of citrus and pine flavors mingling with bright fruit and dankness.”  Stone Ripper weighs in at an easy-drinking 5.7% ABV and is meant to be enjoyed fresh.

“A few of us on the brewing team were lucky enough to visit Australia over the last few years and were impressed with the quality of hops coming out of that region, and especially with the signature hop Galaxy,” said Jeremy Moynier, senior innovation program manager. “We started referring to it as ‘Australian Cascade’ in reference to America’s key hop and got the idea of combining the two together, bringing the bright, intense flavors and aromas from two hemispheres into one amazing beer.”

Currently only available in California, Stone Ripper will begin national distribution in January of 2017.  When it arrives in your area, you can expect to find this brew in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at your favorite craft beer-friendly retailers, bars, and restaurants.  If you are currently in California, drink up and enjoy.  If you are elsewhere, keep this brew in mind to satisfy any hop cravings you encounter in 2017.  Prost!

Stone Brewing Hits November Hard with Bevy of Arrogant Brewing Releases

arrogantbastardsStone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) might be single-handedly declaring November the official month of arrogance with the release of seven (7!) beers from their Arrogant Brewing line: Double Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Bigger Longer UncutLukcy Basartd Ale, Southern Charred, Double Bastard in the Rye, Crime and Punishment.

First up are three Special Release offerings from Arrogant Brewing, and we begin with Double Bastard Ale. This classic was first brewed in 1998 for the one year-anniversary of Arrogant Bastard Ale, and the aggressive nature of this amped-up American Strong Ale has been captivating and/or daunting craft beer fans ever since.  Double Bastard Bigger Longer Uncut arrives for the first time this year, and it is a “peatier, haughtier, boozier, doubler, more ‘er’ of everything” version of Double Bastard Ale thanks to being 100% aged in Islay Scotch Whisky barrels.  Finally, this barrage of Special Releases rounds off with Lukcy Basartd Ale.  Unlike the two previously mentioned beers, this excessively dry-hopped blend of Arrogant Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Ale and OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale will not benefit at all from aging.  Drink it fresh.  Drink it now.

arrogantbastardsbottlesIf those three brews do not seem to fit the criteria to properly bewilder, batter and beat your taste buds, Arrogant Brewing more than has you covered with these four brews dropping from their Small Batch Series:

  • Southern Charred – Continuing the Double Bastard theme by aging the offering for months in Kentucky Bourbon barrels, this treatment lends the brew “a well-rounded mixture” of caramel, molasses, hops, char and brown sugar.  The result: “A once-burly behemoth emerges as a stunningly graceful beast, with its bold, bullish roots lingering just under the surface.”
  • Double Bastard in the Rye – Where the barrel-aging of Southern Charred creates a smoother, more gentlemanly Bastard, the lengthy aging period in Templeton Rye Whisky barrels used in the creation of Double Bastard in the Rye allows the beer to achieve a new height of arrogance by upping the intensity level with “elevated spice and vanilla character.”
  • Crime – A blend of Arrogant Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Ale and OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels and then dosed with jalapeño, serrano, and other chile peppers.  “The result is something unsuitable for the faint of heart, mind or palate.”
  • Punishment – Disclaimer: “While chili pepper connoisseurs, daredevils and masochists proclaim it’s an enlightening experience, the average human (read: you) cries uncle at the first whiff.” Double Bastard Ale aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels acts as the base for Punishment, and then this brew is laced with a sinister amount of capsaicin by way of jalapeno, serrano, Fresno and other undisclosed peppers.  Only the “bold and the truly brave” should take on this brew.

All seven of these Arrogant Brewing beers are available now as limited offerings.  The beers from the Special Releases Series – Double Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Bigger Longer Uncut & Lukcy Basartd Ale – can be found in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer retailers in Alabama, Florida and throughout Stone Brewing Co.’s nationwide distribution footprint.  A bit more limited and a little harder to find, the brews of the Small Batch Series – Southern Charred, Double Bastard in the Rye, Crime & Punishment – can be found in 500ml bottles at select craft beer establishments within Stone Brewing’s distribution area.  If you feel you are truly “worthy” of these brews, swing by your local beer store and add a little liquid arrogance to your holiday season.  Prost!

Stone Brewing Co. 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA Released as Final Beer in Encore Series

emperialipalogoStone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) recently announced that they are wrapping up their 20th Anniversary Encore Series with the re-release of Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA this month.

First brewed and released in 2010, the inspiration for Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA was found after Stone Brewing President & co-founder Steve Wagner took a research trip to England in 2009.  While there, Wagner familiarized himself with the “confusing and often contradictory history of IPAs” and returned with the idea of putting this newfound knowledge to work in the brewery’s upcoming anniversary beer.

To start, Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA was brewed using only British malts, hops and yeast.  In an attempt to further pay respect to the birthplace of the IPA, “even the water was adjusted with mineral salts to more accurately reflect the renowned brewing water chemistry of Burton-on-Trent.” With all of that said, Stone Brewing – being who they are – could not contain themselves and finished the recipe off with a little San Diego flair by adding an “aggressive dose of hops.”  All of this culminates in a beer that is “powerfully spicy with an earthy aroma” and has a “malt sweetness and a light biscuit flavor making a brief appearance before a long, complex and decisively bitter finish.” With this level of attention to detail and craftsmanship, it is no surprise that the initial release was incredibly well regarded by fans of the brewery and that made it an easy decision for Stone Brewing to re-release Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA to close out the 20th Anniversary Encore Series.

“That trip to England was inspiring to say the least,” said Stone Brewing President & co-founder, Steve Wagner. “At the time, we were researching IPAs and we poured over 150-year-old brewer’s logs handwritten in ink. We were inspired to come home and try our hand at the most authentic British IPA we could possibly brew in the US. To re-release this beer is a trip back in time to one of the most inspiring times in my brewing history.”

20th Anniversary Encore Series: Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA is available now as a limited release offering.  You can find this beer in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at select craft beer establishments in Alabama, Florida and throughout Stone Brewing’s national distribution footprint.  This is your last opportunity to raise a glass of a 20th Anniversary Encore Series offering in celebration of Stone Brewing Co.’s two decades of unwavering dedication and unmeasurable contribution to craft brewing, so be sure to grab yourself a bottle of 20th Anniversary Encore Series: Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA on your next beer run.  Prost!
