Catawba Brewing Co. Goes Lo-Cal with Launch of Light Zombie White Ale

Catawba Brewing Co. (Asheville, North Carolina) has officially announced that it will launch Light Zombie, a low calorie/low carb version of its wildly popular White Ale, in mid-December 2021.

Arriving just in time for all those New Year’s resolutions, Light Zombie is a trimmed down White Ale that still has “all the delicious flavors of OG White Zombie.” Coming in at just 4% ABV, 100 calories and 7g of carbs (per 12 oz. serving), Light Zombie is a perfect post-workout reward or that more health-conscious option you have been looking for when out having a drink with friends.

Light Zombie – available temporarily in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans – will hit Catawba’s Charlotte, Asheville, and Morganton taprooms on Friday, December 17 (the Wilmington taproom will see this offering soon). Light Zombie will then transition to 12 oz. skinny cans in January 2022. Prost!

Catawba Brewing Co. Introduces El Gato Mariachi as Newest Seasonal Release

CVB-ElGato12ozFRONTCatawba Brewing Co. (Morganton, North Carolina) has officially announced that it will begin the Seasonal Release of El Gato Mariachi Horchata White Ale on February 21.

Created as an “homage to the famous drink of taquerias across Latin America – and envisioned as the perfect beer pairing for tacos,” El Gato Mariachi is an horchata-inspired White Ale that “incorporates all the traditional Horchata ingredients into a wheat ale base – along with a healthy dose of milk sugar.” To make things extra authentic, rice was added to the malt bill to “[lighten] the body for excellent drinkability, without sacrificing its creamy mouthfeel.”  Clocking in at 5.3% ABV, El Gato Mariachi features “an enticing aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls . . . and finishes with just the right blend of vanilla sweetness and a touch of cinnamon spice.”

Developed to be the peanut-butter-centric wintertime companion to Catawba’s iconic Peanut Butter Jelly Time Brown Ale, Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout is an American Stout that has been “conditioned on locally-sourced cacao nibs, whole roasted North Carolina peanuts, and Madagascar vanilla beans.”  Clocking in at just 5.4% ABV, Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout is a “silky smooth . . .  decadent liquid dessert – like a peanut butter cup in a glass.”

Catawba Brewing Co. Doubles Down on Pumpkin Beers in 2019

(Asheville, North Carolina) has officially announced that it is shaking things up this fall by releasing two Pumpkin Ales – the brewery’s long-standing King Don’s Pumpkin Ale and the brand-new Emperor Don’s Imperial Pumpkin Ale – in early September 2019.

Named after “one of the original North Carolina brewers who created one of the first commercially available pumpkin beers,” King Don’s is a Pumpkin Ale brewed with “five separate barley varieties, fresh pumpkin, and an assortment of spices (cinnamon, ginger, allspice, clove, nutmeg) to create its complex flavor profile.”  Coming in at just 5.5% ABV, King Don’s Pumpkin Ale is a “wonderfully smooth, orange-hued beer that sports a luscious, creamy foam head.”

Developed this year to take King Don’s “crown to the next level,” Emperor Don’s is an Imperial Pumpkin Ale that is just a “bigger, bolder, and more regal” variant of Catawba’s original Pumpkin Ale.  Rocking a bigger throne and ABV (7.8%), Emperor Don’s Imperial Pumpkin Ale is “everything you love about the King and more. After all, it’s good to be King, but it’s better to be Emperor.”

Rising Sun Hazy IPA Returns to Catawba Brewing Co. Tasting Rooms on 4/20

CatawbaRisingSunCatawba Brewing Co. (Asheville, North Carolina) has officially announced that Cloud Cover: Rising Sun Hazy IPA will roll in for a Limited Release on April 20 (4/20).

Originally introduced in 2018 as the inaugural canned release in Catawba’s Cloud Cover Series, Rising Sun is a Hazy India Pale Ale that features Citra hops in the whirlpool and a dry-hop with Amarillo, Citra, El Dorado and Mosaic.  This intense hop bill supplies Rising Sun (7.8% ABV, 43 IBUs) with a sensory profile filled with notes of “candied peach, ripe melon, lychee, strawberry, and resin.”

Rising Sun Hazy IPA will officially release in Catawba Brewing Co.’s Tasting Rooms on April 20, 2019 (a.k.a. 4/20).  This Limited Release offering will be available in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans and on draft for as long as supplies last.  Like all Cloud Cover releases, Rising Sun is a taproom-only release that will not see distribution.  Prost!

Known in some circles as Catawba Brewing Co.’s “most scandalous beer of all”, Deep State is a Baltic Porter that covertly obtains its “complexity from five specialty malts” – Pale, Munich II, Vienna, Crystal and Chocolate.  This robust malt bill yields a “full-flavored character . . . layered with rich malt, toffee, dark fruits, and a hint of roast.”  Coming in at a stealthy 7.2% ABV and 33 IBUs, Deep State is “a dangerously drinkable dark lager” that “finishes silky smooth.”

Drum Circle Haze Slated to be Catawba Brewing’s First Distributed Hazy IPA

Releasing as the latest offering from Catawba Brewing’s Cloud Cover Series and its first Hazy IPA to see distribution, Drum Circle Haze DIPA is a liquid celebration of a long-standing Asheville tradition that sees “hundreds gather beneath Pritchard Park’s painted skies to partake in the spectacle that is the Drum Circle.” Brewed with a hop bill comprised of Amarillo, Centennial, Citra, El Dorado, Falconer’s Flight and Huell Melon hops, Drum Circle Haze DIPA (8.4% ABV) is an “unfiltered juice bomb” that pays “tribute to the players, the dancers, the hula-hoopers, the spectators, who collectively summon a hazy state of rhythmic transcendence.”

Drum Circle Haze DIPA will officially release in the Asheville market on July 21 and will hang around as long as supplies last.  For this Limited Release, Catawba is sending just 100 cases of 4-packs of 16 oz. cans to Asheville-area stores. Catawba Brewing’s Soulshine Kölsch Debuts as New Limited Release

CVB-Beer-Blocks_SShineCatawba Brewing Co. (Asheville, North Carolina) has officially announced that Soulshine Kölsch, a special collaboration with Mountain Khakis of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, will see a Limited Release beginning on Friday, June 29.

Soulshine Kölsch was developed by Catawba Brewing Co. and Mountain Khakis –  a brand “nationally renowned for its premium outdoor clothing and gear, ‘built for the mountain lifestyle'” – as a means of pursuing their “shared mission to protect lands and waterways, making connections between people and nature.”  A portion of the proceeds raised from the sale of this beer will go to benefit Catawba Lands Conservancy, “a nonprofit, community-based conservation organization that permanently conserves and manages land for public benefit in the Southern Piedmont of North Carolina.”

As far as the beer itself, Soulshine Kölsch is a “light, crisp, refreshing German-style summer ale” that employs “traditional fermentation methods unique to the Kölsch style.”  With floral and earthy Noble hops – Magnum and Hallertau Mittelfrüh – balancing the pale malts, this approach ultimately yields a classic take on the Kölsch that “drinks like a fine German lager with hints of ale-type fruitiness.”

Inspired by the “rich brewing history of our Southern Neighbor”, the brewers at Catawba Brewing Co. have crafted Carolina Del Norte to mimic the refreshing nature of the Vienna-style Lagers that are so popular in Mexico. They pulled this off by brewing a deep golden Mexican-style Lager that “has big Vienna malt character and noble hop aroma from Hallertau Mittelfrüh German hops.” Clocking in a just 5.5% ABV and 25 IBUs, Carolina Del Norte is an “easy-drinking cerveza [that celebrates] the intersection of North Carolina and Mexico – ‘a place of questionable geography, but undeniably inspired beer.'”
