Coronado Brewing Sends Shaka Berry Pastry Stout Out for a Limited Release

Pastry-Stout_webCoronado Brewing Company (San Diego, California) has officially announced that it will begin the Limited Release of Shaka Berry Pastry Stout on Friday, February 7.

Arriving just in time to add a little sweetness to your Valentine’s Day, Shaka Berry Pastry Stout is an Imperial Milk Stout that “blends tart boysenberries and blackberries with rich cocoa and vanilla bean.”  Coming in at 10.5 ABV, Shaka Berry comes together to be a decadent Pastry Stout that is carefully layered with “waves of flavor.”

“We wanted to have fun with a pastry stout that was big and decadent, but not barrel-aged,” says Mark Theisen, Head Brewer, Coronado Brewing Company. “We explored a lot of flavor profiles before landing where we did. The combo of chocolate and fruit work so well together and it really is the perfect beer to crack open for Valentine’s Day.”

“This beer is so big, that in order to hit our ABV goals, we did a double mash for each batch,” says Theisen. “We were basically using double the grist and doing a really long boil to hit our 10.5% ABV.” In addition to the imperial stout base, the brewers added cocoa powder, vanilla beans, lactose, and a blend of blackberries and boysenberries. “This was a challenging beer because we wanted the chocolate and fruit to be in harmony and not compete with each other,” says Theisen. “I get a lot of cocoa up front, then the berries hit you with a slight tartness that cuts through the sweetness of the rich stout base. In the end, its super complex but drinkable, and we encourage fans to enjoy it now!”

Shaka Berry Pastry Stout will debut at all three Coronado Brewing Company locations on February 7 and is scheduled to enter distribution the following week.  You can expect to find this Limited Release offering available in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans and on draft at select craft beer-friendly establishments located in North Carolina, California and throughout the rest of Coronado Brewing Company’s distribution footprint.  Prost!

Coronado Brewing Introduces Rise East/Set West Mixed 4-Pack of IPAs

CoronadoBrewingLogoCoronado Brewing Company (San Diego, California) has officially announced that it will release its innovative Rise East/Set West IPA Mixed 4-pack of 16 oz. cans in late May 2019.

Developed to showcase the difference between East Coast and West Coast IPAs and how “yeast strains affect a recipe”, Rise East Hazy IPA and Set West West Coast-style IPA both start with the same India Pale Ale base but are then exposed to their own assigned yeast.  Even though the hop bill is the same (although utilized in a different dry-hopping regimen for each beer), the subtle changes in this project result in these “two deliciously unique beers” (descriptions sourced directly from the brewery’s website):

  • Rise East | Hazy IPA – Continuously dry-hopped then fermented with London III yeast for juicy notes of pineapple, mango and peach. This easy-drinking hazy IPA rises to any occasion.  ABV – 7%
  • Set West | West Coast-style IPA – Single dry-hopped and fermented with Cal Ale yeast for a lingering dryness and notes of sticky pine and ripe stone fruit.  Laid back yet assertive – it’s west coast through and through.  ABV – 7%

“As brewers, it’s fun to see how yeast can really change the flavor profile of a beer,” says Shawn Steele, Director of Brewing Operations, Coronado Brewing Company. “The mixed four-pack gives fans a chance to try the beers side-by-side and experience those differences for themselves. It was a lot of work building the mixed-packs, but we think the end result is worth it!”

The Rise East/Set West IPA Mixed 4-pack – each pack containing two 16 oz. cans of each offering – will debut at Coronado Brewing’s three locations on May 24 and is scheduled to enter distribution by the end of the month.  You can expect to find this Limited Release Mixed 4-pack at select craft beer-focused retailers located in North Carolina, California and throughout the rest of Coronado’s distribution footprint. Coronado Brewing and Cigar City Brewing Release Conquista IPA Collaboration

conquistabeachCoronado Brewing Company (Coronado, California) recently announced that they have joined forces with Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, Florida) to combine their award-winning skills in the creation of Conquista IPA.

In an act of unity that brings the East Coast and West Coast IPA together, Wayne Wambles – Brewmaster at Cigar City Brewing – partnered with Ryan Brooks – Brewmaster at Coronado Brewing – “to brew a west coast-inspired IPA featuring Polaris, a new German varietal prized for its complex pineapple and herb notes.”  To ensure that these hops were nothing but quality, Brooks ventured to Germany “to hand-select the Polaris hops used for this beer.” Equinox and Simcoe hops were then added to Conquista IPA’s recipe to yield a hop-forward beer full of “earthy, resiny, ripe mango, and herbaceous notes.”

“Wayne and I both love IPA’s and we wanted to brew something we’d enjoy drinking,” says Ryan Brooks, Brewmaster, Coronado Brewing Company. “We knew we wanted the beer to be dank and juicy, and we definitely achieved that with Conquista.”

Conquista IPA is available now in 22 oz. bottles and on draft.  This limited, collaboration release can be found at select craft beer-friendly establishments in Florida, California and throughout the rest of Coronado Brewing’s distribution network.  Track down a bottle of Conquista IPA and enjoy the best of both coasts thanks to the talents of Coronado Brewing Company and Cigar City Brewing.  Prost!

Coronado Brewing Releases Barrel-Aged Stupid Stout

ba_ss_web1-bottleCoronado Brewing Company (San Diego, California) will officially close out 2016 in style with the much-anticipated, limited release of Barrel-Aged Stupid Stout.

Returning as the year’s final release in the brewery’s Coronado Collection, Barrel-Aged Stupid Stout takes Coronado Brewing’s Seasonal release of Stupid Stout Imperial Stout to new heights thanks to “five months aging in fresh bourbon barrels from West Virginia craft distiller, Smooth Ambler.”  This aging process transforms the base beer by adding complex notes of bourbon-laced vanilla to the brew’s already intense “layers of espresso, caramel, dark chocolate, and a smooth, warming finish.”

“We look forward to this release each year,” says Ryan Brooks, Brewmaster, Coronado Brewing Company. “Stupid Stout is a big, bold beer, and it gets even more complex with barrel-aging. I love how the beer picks up subtle vanilla and coconut notes from the oak.”

Barrel-Aged Stupid Stout officially released in the Tasting Room at Coronado Brewing on December 23.  If you could not make the release event in San Diego, worry not because kegs and 22 oz. bottles of this small-batch, limited offering are headed out now to Florida and all other states within Coronado’s distribution network.  Like all barrel-aged beers these days, Barrel-Aged Stupid Stout is sure to move quickly once it hits shelves and taps.  Be sure to get yours if/when you see it.  Prost!
