Heavy Seas Goes Year-Round with TropiCannon Citrus IPA

hsbtropicannonbottleHeavy Seas Beer (Baltimore, Maryland) announced this week that TropiCannon Citrus IPA has officially been reclassified as the brewery’s newest year-round offering.

First released as a new Spring Seasonal earlier this year, TropiCannon Citrus IPA arrived as a fruit-infused take on Heavy Seas Beer’s flagship Loose Cannon IPA.  To achieve the desired level of juiciness, the brew’s foundation was shaken up by swapping out Loose Cannon’s piney Centennial and Palisade hop additions for the more citrus forward varietals of Amarillo and (even more) Simcoe.  The brewers then blasted the beer with “dried grapefruit, orange and lemon peel in the brewing process and added mango, blood orange and more grapefruit post-fermentation.”  The result was a massive hit with the brewery’s fans, and the folks at Heavy Seas have now decided that TropiCannon Citrus IPA has more than earned the right to become a year-round offering.

“TropiCannon was a pleasant surprise for us in 2016,” says Heavy Seas Founder, Hugh Sisson. “It was originally planned as a limited release product, but so many people kept asking for it that we decided we needed to make it available on a year-round basis. At least for now. This is part of what makes the beer industry so fun!”

A steady and constant flow of TropiCannon Citrus IPA is headed back to shelves and taps in the very near future.  Look for this one to turn up in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer establishments in Alabama, Florida and throughout the full distribution area of Heavy Seas Beer.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Partner Ships Rye Wit from Heavy Seas Beer & Terrapin Beer Co.

hsbtbcryewitlabelThis segment of Tasting Notes continues the collaboration theme by taking a look at the Partner Ships Rye Wit collaboration from Heavy Seas Beer (Baltimore, Maryland) and Terrapin Beer Co. (Athens, Georgia).

Not only is Rye Wit the current installment in The Partner Ships Series, a lineup of limited releases from Heavy Seas Beer “produced in collaboration with other regionally and nationally recognized brewers in the spirit of friendship, creativity, and adventure,” but it might also be one of the most stealthily clever beer names of the year. How so?  Well . . . Rye Wit sounds a little like “pirate”, an obvious part of the Heavy Seas schtick; it is a homophone for “wry wit”; and it has been said that pirates can indeed have a wry wit.  Savvy?

Alright, let’s move beyond the word play and get back on track with information on this beer.  For this release, Heavy Seas Beer collaborated with the brewers at Terrapin Beer Co. on a recipe that combines the proficiencies for which each brewery is known: the barrel-aging practices of Heavy Seas and Terrapin’s love/obsession with rye.   They ultimately decided to brew up a Witbier boasting the distinct characteristics of rye malts, and then aged it for sixteen weeks in Chardonnay barrels.  Once completed, the 6% ABV Partner Ships Rye Wit was packaged in 22 oz. bottles and released as a limited offering available within the distribution area of Heavy Seas.  This offering is nearing the end of its availability to make room for the next release within the Partner Ships series (click here to read up on that one), but you still stand a pretty good chance of coming across a bottle or two at your favorite craft beer retailer.  That should just about cover the particulars, so let’s put this sweet Witbier glass to some good use and get to the Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Partner Ships Rye Wit from Heavy Seas Beer and Terrapin Beer Co.

Appearance: Rye Wit flows into the glass to produce a body that is a sunburst orange in color.  When held to direct light, golds radiate near the top and bottom of the glass while the orange center deepens and intensifies.  The body has a good amount of haze and cloudiness to it, but a lazy carbonation presence can be seen meandering about in the form of bubbles that intermittently surface.  The pour generated 3+ fingers of fluffy, snow-white foam.  Head retention is quite good, eventually falling slowly to a lasting finger of a top cap.  This foam displays an other-worldly level of stick, leaving globs of pillow-like lace all over the glass.  Spot on, textbook example of what a Witbier should look like.

Aroma:  An alluring white wine character greets the nose to start.  A fruity sweetness presents itself in the form of Chardonnay grapes and melon, and the barrel lends a touch of creamy vanilla as well.  While savoring this quality, the spicy rye begins to gently bloom.  Wheat then lends an earthy grain note and a touch of banana that mingles easily with light, citrusy hop tones.  One word comes to mind here: Exquisite.

Taste: Rye is so unmistakable as an ingredient, so it is no surprise that it hits the taste buds first.  With that said, those spicy, black pepper tones are tempered as a gentle grain sweetness builds and the banana-like qualities of the wheat come forward.  Also, a touch of coriander arrives to complement the rye even further.  The hops then slide into the frame to provide balance with notes of orange, lemon and peach.  The Chardonnay barrels then embrace the entire experience by rounding and smoothing it all out with a snappy white grape character, a bit of tropical fruit, some earthiness, and the faintest of vanilla sweetness.  This may seem like a lot to take in – and it is -, but it all coalesces with an impeccable level of balance that allows you to fully enjoy and distinguish every aspect of this beer’s flavor.  Incredibly impressive.

Mouthfeel:  Rye Wit is medium in body with a medium level of carbonation.  This brew is crisp and dry, so much so that it further reminds the drinker of a tannin-like, white wine experience.  Aspects of sweetness, bitterness and spice are all allowed to play on the palate, but all of this cleans up and out with remarkable quickness.  At just 6% ABV, the alcohol presence is incredibly light to non-existent.  Delicate Chardonnay notes linger as the only trace of an aftertaste.

Final Thoughts: Like I mentioned above, we all know that Terrapin Beer Co. is a huge fan of using rye as an ingredient in their beers.  Knowing this and seeing that this beer’s name starts with “Rye”, I was initially a bit worried that Partner Ships Rye Wit might take the gracefully nuanced Witbier style to a level of spice overload that just translates as a brutish rye bomb.  The reality is that I was unfairly pessimistic because the intricate level of balance achieved by Heavy Seas and Terrapin in the creation of this beer is simply stunning.  Sure, that spicy rye is showcased, but it is done in such a way that it is reserved and knows its place.  Notes of citrusy hops, a sweet and earthy wheat presence, and sophisticated fruity and vanilla tones from the Chardonnay barrels interlace with the rye to create an elaborate experience that is completely devoid of any aggression or harshness.  Each corner of this beer is softly rounded, allowing every quality of Rye Wit to glide and dance freely across the palate.  This beer is ridiculously complex, but it has been presented in a manner that is approachable and familiar.  Oh, and if you have been looking for that perfect offering to introduce the white wine drinker in your life to world of craft beer, this is it right here.  Prost!

21.pngHeavy Seas Beer (Baltimore, Maryland) informed their fans today that they will be celebrating 21 years of brewing with the December release of 21 Anniversary Ale.

As the latest offering from the Heavy Seas Uncharted Waters series and a newly incarnated anniversary beer release, 21 Anniversary Ale celebrates this impressive brewing milestone as an Imperial Rye Extra Special Bitter aged in Sagamore Spirit rye whiskey barrels.  The recipe lays a foundation boasting “imported UK Marris Otter malt, Crystal Rye malt, local Domino brown sugar, and a blend of spicy, herbaceous British and American hops.”  Once the brewing process is completed, 21 will then be aged for sixty days in those locally sourced Sagamore Spirit barrels to further support the rye notes featured in this ESB.  The finished beer weighs in at 10.5% ABV and 65 IBUs.

“We wanted to create a synergy between the Rye Whiskey Barrels, the beer, and the consumer, taking him or her on a sensory journey. Heavy Seas Beer Prepares for Seasonal Return of Winter Storm

winterstormHeavy Seas Beer (Baltimore, Maryland) recently announced that Winter Storm Imperial ESB is set for release in October.

Winter Storm is the fall/winter seasonal for Heavy Seas and one of the brewery’s most anticipated releases each year.  This Imperial Extra Special Bitter showcases five hop varietals from both the United Kingdom and the West Coast of the United States –  Warrior, UK Goldings, UK Fuggles, Cascade & Centennial hops – to produce an “elegant bitterness.”  Nutty malts supply the beer’s “ruddy” color and provide balance to the earthy hops.  Winter Storm’s comforting and rich flavors make it an ideal choice for the colder months ahead.

“It was our first international gold medal winning beer,” says brewery Founder, Hugh Sisson. “And I’m not supposed to say it, but I think it may be my favorite beer!”

“I also think it’s one of the best beer names ever,” says Sisson. “Every time the winter weather gets iffy, every TV and radio station in the country is advertising the name of our beer for free!”

Winter Storm Imperial ESB will officially release in October and be available into December.  Look for this offering to turn up on draft, cask and in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles at craft beer retailers in Alabama, Florida and throughout the 18 state distribution footprint of Heavy Seas.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Hoppelbock from Heavy Seas Beer & Tröegs Brewing

Heavy-Seas-Partnerships-HoppelbockTasting Notes doubles down this week by taking a look at the Partner Ships Hoppelbock collaboration from Heavy Seas Beer (Baltimore, Maryland) and Tröegs Independent Brewing (Hershey, Pennsylvania).

Hoppelbock was created by brewers from both Heavy Seas and Tröegs Brewing as part of the Partner Ships Series, a lineup of limited releases from Heavy Seas that is “produced in collaboration with other regionally and nationally recognized brewers in the spirit of friendship, creativity, and adventure.” This 8% ABV twist on the Doppelbock style gets its malty foundation thanks to a “large percentage of locally sourced malt from Deer Creek Malthouse in Pennsylvania” and a hoppy counterbalance by way of five German hop varieties (Hallertau Mittlefrue, Opal, Perle, Magnum and Herkules hops).  A limited amount of Hoppelbock was officially released in May, but 22 oz. bottles may still be hanging around out there at craft beer-friendly establishments within the Heavy Seas distribution area.  Now that we covered the background on this beer, let’s pour this bomber and get familiar with Hoppelbock in some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Partner Ships Hoppelbock from Heavy Seas Beer & Tröegs Independent Brewing

Appearance: Hoppelbock pours up a burnt orange to rich caramel brown in appearance.  Held to direct light, lighter brown, shimmering orange and deep garnet hues push through.  This glowing body is crystal clear and shows off a lazy carbonation level meandering within.  The pour got me two fingers of bubbly, off-white to light tan colored foam.  Head retention is decent, eventually falling to a much tighter and chunkier half finger that has some real lasting ability.  Lacing is minimal, as most wisps of foam glide quickly back down the glass to rest once again in that top cap.  The look of this beer is both beautiful and imposing.

Aroma: The malty goodness you want from a Doppelbock absolutely billows from the glass. A biscuity and caramel sweetness leads the grains to have some serious size in the aromatic profile, but an assertive hop presence resides within.  Spicy hops and a light dark fruit character complements the malt nuances with ease, and a floral note stands tall to declare the “Hoppel” portion of this Bock.

Taste: The balance is on point with this beer.  There is a delightful dance of push and pull between the malty backbone and the hoppy accents.  Like in the aroma, the malts lay down a wonderfully sweet foundation of caramel and bready qualities.  The hops then come forth with some black pepper spice that shifts into graceful floral and nondescript fruity notes.  Although it may sound simple to some, this harmonious flavor profile is a lot to take in and a joy to explore.

Mouthfeel:  This is a medium to full bodied lager that bears a nice weight to it.  On the palate, it has a velvety, silken texture that is a touch creamy as well.  At 8% ABV, the alcohol has a bit of heat to it but it is more than reasonable.  The carbonation level falls in the middle of the road, keeping the beer somewhat easy drinking while still allowing it to have some heft.  Aftertaste is full of those wonderful malt tones and some lingering floral notes.

Final Thoughts: Just as the name suggests, Hoppelbock is a wonderfully duplicitous brew by providing its drinker with the best of both worlds: It has all the malts you expect and crave from a German Doppelbock, and the assertiveness you want from American-made hoppy brews.  This beer is a constant give and take that takes its time to show each and every malty and hoppy note within.  Some may want or expect a bit more in-your-face dynamics from this beer, and to them I would suggest that they slow down and truly allow the senses to drink in all aspects of this offering.  In doing so, the craftsmanship employed to create this brew’s fine level of balance will not go unnoticed.  Sip, savor and revel in this wonderful, American take on the Doppelbock style by two great breweries.  Prost!
