Tasting Notes: Grass Monkey from SweetWater Brewing Company

IMGP5451_editedSince spring is just around the corner, we welcome the season with a little Tasting Notes action focused on Grass Monkey from SweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia).

Grass Monkey debuted back in February as SweetWater Brewing’s newest Catch n’ Release Seasonal.  To make this offering an ideal option for spring weather drinking, Grass Monkey is an American Pale Wheat Ale that packs “a big citrus blast” thanks to being dosed with “a big stash of Lemondrop hops.”  Lemongrass herbs were then added to the equation to give the beer “a refreshing twist and exotic aroma.” At just 5.4% ABV and 35 IBUs, this brew proves to be “extremely complex but very easy drinking.”  Grass Monkey is a Seasonal release that will only be around until April.  You can find this offering available in 12 oz. cans, 12 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and throughout the rest of SweetWater Brewing Company’s distribution area.  I do believe that covers all the necessary background information, so let’s pry off this cap and get to some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Grass Monkey from SweetWater Brewing Company

Appearance:  Grass Monkey fills the glass as a bright golden colored brew that pulses with burnt orange hues at its center.  Held to direct light, the golden yellows gain more vibrancy and softly glow.  The body is lightly hazy, but a steady carbonation presence can still be seen coursing within.  The pour produced nearly a full finger of tight white foam.  Showing that it has an incredible level of retention, the head maintains its size throughout the experience despite leaving plenty of chunky strings of lace behind after each sip.

Aroma:  Pure and unmistakable, wonderfully clean notes of lemon simply billow from the glass.  We are talking the full fruit: zest, pith, meat and juice.  Lemongrass is close behind with supporting citrus, grassy and herbaceous, tea-like qualities. The wheat is light in the aroma, but it is still present enough to lend some bready, grain sweetness.

Taste:  Just as in the aroma, gorgeous notes of lemon lead the way here.  With just the right amount of citric tartness, this lemon character translates as more of a fresh-squeezed lemonade that has been made with just a sprinkle of sugar and dash of lemon zest.  Not too sweet, not too sour, not too bitter. . . just a chance to truly appreciate all of the refreshing qualities of the lemon.  The lemongrass then supplies earthy, grassy and herbal aspects that further accentuate and complement the lemon.  The flavor profile rounds off with just a touch of underlying pine and some light malt sweetness that reads as honey wheat bread.

Mouthfeel:  This brew is light in body with a peppy carbonation presence.  It is both lightly sweet and hoppy on the palate, but it each sip fades quickly and cleans up nicely.  At 5.4% ABV, the alcohol plays no role here and keeps the experience wonderfully easy drinking and refreshing.  The aftertaste is just a grace of lingering lemon.

Final Thoughts:  Grass Monkey ultimately comes together as a fantastic warm weather brew that successfully uses the easy-drinking nature of the American Pale Wheat Ale to act as a vehicle for a truly hop-focused experience.  The Lemondrop hops are beautifully showcased as the star, but this has been done in such a manner that they are not overly aggressive or bitter.  Just as you feel the hops about to take firm hold of your palate, the wheat and subtle lemongrass notes intervene with a wisp of sweetness and some attention-grabbing complexity.  Although the label reads “hoppy’, overt dankness was clearly not the intention. No . . . the intention here was to achieve optimum levels of refreshment while still respecting everything that these unique hops can offer a beer’s flavor and aroma.  If that was the true endgame when SweetWater was brewing this beer, consider that mission accomplished. If you have not yet, make sure you pick up a sixer or order a pour of Grass Monkey before its Seasonal run comes to an end in April.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Dank Tank Pulled Porter from SweetWater Brewing Company

swppcansTasting Notes satisfies many cravings this week by spending a little time with Dank Tank Pulled Porter – Bacon Smoke Flavored Porter from SweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia).

Back in mid-December, we let you all know of Pulled Porter’s triumphant return to SweetWater Brewing Company’s Dank Tank lineup, the brewery’s series of “rarely released randomness” (click here to read that full post). When you take into account that this chocolaty Porter was brewed with malts that were carefully smoked alongside racks of bacon from Fox Bro’s BBQ, it is absolutely no surprise that Pulled Porter is back for an encore release.  When all is said and done, this 7.7% ABV Smoked Porter is “a savory, smoky brew that’s a big winter warmer.”  This offering is currently available for a limited time in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans and on draft at fine craft beer retailers found in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and throughout the rest of SweetWater’s distribution area.

Alright, it has been officially declared bacon and beer time. Let’s pour this pint and get to some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Dank Tank Pulled Porter from SweetWater Brewing Company

Appearance:  Pulled Porter hits the glass seemingly pitch black in appearance with just a sliver of cola brown peeking through at the bottom of the glass.  When held to direct light, the beer proves to walk a tight rope between hues of the darkest possible browns and inky blacks.  The body is opaque, but a soft, consistent carbonation presence can be witnessed coursing from the bottom of the glass.  The pour built two fingers of solid, fluffy foam that is dark tan in color.  Head retention is good, falling eventually to a lasting, chunky finger.  The lacing has substantial stick to it, leaving wide arcing patterns across the glass.

Aroma:  The first smell to present itself is strikingly similar to the one you would get upon opening an unlit but well-seasoned smoker.  There is a rush of beautiful smoke, ashen wood embers and a nondescript quality of savory meats.  These notes then mingle with a bit of bittersweet chocolate that is light in presence but well at home here.  The smoke has firmly asserted itself as the aroma’s star.

Taste:  Just as in the nose, the flavors begin with tones that are rich in smoke.  Qualities of earthy wood, campfire, smoked pork, caramelized brown sugar, and just a touch of spice initially dominate.  Forward but rightly so.  Intense but composed.  These notes then begin to relax to allow flavors of toasted grain and bread the opportunity to back them up a bit with added hearty and sweet tones.  A tinge of hop character squeaks through with some citrus before the more pronounced smoke flavors eventually fade to expose decadent notes of dark and milk chocolate.  Just as you think the beer is finished, another wave of smoke arrives to wash over the palate once more.

Mouthfeel:  Perfectly medium in body, this Porter has a solid weight to it that is lifted just a touch by a medium carbonation level.  Abundantly savory and smoky on the palate, this beer also displays a delightful grace of sweetness.  ABV is light, leaving just a bit of heat to build at times in the belly.  The aftertaste is lingering rich smokiness.

Final Thoughts:  If I was forced to sum up Dank Tank Pulled Porter with just one word, I would quickly and confidently respond with “satisfying.” By that, I mean it is satisfying in an all-encompassing, comforting way.  The smokiness is just intense enough to firmly declare itself a Smoked Beer, but it does so in a relaxed manner that is reminiscent of smoke-laced memories of good times spent around a campfire.  You know the smoke is there, but you still have the chance to enjoy everything else going on around you . . . or in this case, within this beer.  The smoke pulls back just enough to allow the added hops and malts a chance to do their thing by lending countering layers of sweetness and bitterness. Instead of having this beer hide behind an overly aggressive smoke character, the brewers at SweetWater clearly employed a profound level of restraint to infuse the brew with a spot-on amount of savoriness. The beer certainly knows its role and has established intentions of enticing you to return for sip after sip.  This beautifully executed approach proves to be the key in producing a Smoked Beer that is truly easy drinking, approachable and a wonderful choice to pair with food.  I highly recommend that you shake up your usual routine during your next beer run and pick up some Dank Tank Pulled Porter to enjoy what is absolutely an outstanding craft beer experience.  Prost!

SweetWater Brewing to Hit February with Several New Releases

sweetwaterdyeSweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia) has announced plans to release four new offerings in February: Grass Monkey, Dank Tank Old Man Johnson’s Farm, Hatchery Series Single Hop Mosaic IPA and 20th Anniversary Ale.

Since the brewery will commemorate its 20th Anniversary during the month of February, it is clear that the folks at SweetWater Brewing Company want to provide us all with several new offerings so that we may properly celebrate this occasion.  We have quite a bit of information to cover, so let’s get at it:

Grass Monkey Hoppy Wheat Ale with Lemongrass

Arriving as SweetWater’s new Spring Seasonal, Grass Monkey is a hoppy Pale Wheat Ale that has been aggressively hopped with “a big stash of Lemondrop hops” to supply “a big citrus blast.”  To complement the hops and step up this beer’s level of refreshment, the brewers then added lemongrass herbs.  All of this is set upon a light malt base to allow “the piney, grassy, lemony notes [to] shine.” Grass Monkey officially releases on January 26 and will be available through April.

Old Man Johnson’s Farm Imperial Stout with Raspberries

SweetWater brewers have fired up the Dank Tank once again and this time it holds Old Man Johnson’s Farm, an Imperial Stout with raspberries.  To lay the foundation of this sizable Imperial Stout, a hefty malt bill is employed to impart “intense aromas of roasted coffee and chocolate.”  The beer is then elevated to true Dank Tank status with the addition of fresh raspberries during fermentation to “complement the dark chocolate with a tasty sweetness.”  Old Man Johnson’s Farm will also begin its release on January 26, but this limited release will only be available on draft.

Single Hop Mosaic IPA

The first official bottle release from The Hatchery at SweetWater Brewing Company will be Single Hop Mosaic IPA.  The Hatchery is the brewery’s new pilot system where brewers will test out new recipes, ideas and brewing techniques.  Most Hatchery beers will only be available on draft at the brewery, but SweetWater plans to release one bottle per seasonal variety pack release.  Just as the name implies, this offering features the Mosaic hop’s “juicy orange, mango, citrus and passionfruit flavors.”  A very simple grain bill provides just enough biscuity notes to properly balance out the finished beer.  This limited release will be available in 12 oz. bottles found in SweetWater’s spring variety packs only (February – April).

  • Release – Limited/Hatchery Series, February through April 2017
  • Style – American India Pale Ale

20thanniversary-bottle-crop-161128-0120th Anniversary Ale

Finally, SweetWater Brewing Company will wrap up February with the release of their 20th Anniversary Ale.  This incredibly special release is an “extremely hop-forward” Imperial India Pale Ale that has been brewed with hop hash and a house Brettanomyces yeast strain.  The completed beer boasts an aroma that “is fruity, herbal, tropical and citrusy, and the Brett gives a nice touch of funk and earthy phenolics.”  20th Anniversary Ale will be officially released in 750ml cork and cage bottles at SweetWater’s 20th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, February 19.  Tickets for this event are still available and you can purchase yours by clicking here.

  • Release – Limited, to be released at SweetWater’s 20th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, February 19

SweetWater Brewing Releases Festive Ale and Pulled Porter

Festive-Labels-12oz-160825-08SweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia) has officially announced the return of Festive Ale and Dank Tank Pulled Porter as the brewery’s latest limited release offerings.

Returning just in time to get SweetWater fans in the holiday spirit, the 2016 vintage of Festive Ale is back as the brewery’s answer to “Winter Coat Season.”  This annual release is a spiced Strong Ale brewed with a recipe consisting of seven malts, three hops, cinnamon and mace.  At 8.3% ABV, Festive Ale is more than willing and able “to keep you warm and toasted all winter long.”  This offering is available now in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of SweetWater’s distribution footprint.

danktankpulledportercansPulled Porter has emerged once again from SweetWater’s Dank Tank, and it is now the first beer from this series to be offered in 16 oz. cans. For those of you who may have missed this beer’s debut last year, Pulled Porter is a bacon-infused Smoked Porter.  The brewery pulled off this porcine delight by using malts smoked by Atlanta BBQ heroes the Fox Bros.  These smoke-kissed malts take this chocolaty Porter to another level by adding a rich, savory quality to the brew.  Pulled Porter is available now on draft and in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans at the brewery.  This offering will officially enter distribution by mid-December, and you will find it wherever you normally see SweetWater Dank Tank offerings.

Although Festive Ale and Dank Tank Pulled Porter are hitting shelves and taps now, keep in mind that both offerings will only be available for a limited time.  Get your fill while you can.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit from SweetWater Brewing

squeezebox-bottle-smallSince the wildly popular India Pale Ale style has been inexplicably missing from Tasting Notes as of late, we shall remedy this situation by pouring up a Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit from SweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia) to feature in this week’s segment.

Not too long ago, I let you all know of SweetWater Brewing Company’s plans to release Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit this November as the brewery’s newest winter release in their Catch n’ Release Series of seasonal brews (click here to check that out).  Just as the name suggests, this offering is a juicy India Pale Ale boasting “five tropical hop additions and dosed with a shot of . . . grapefruit.”  This 6.1% ABV IPA is available now through January and can be found in 12 oz. cans, 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles, in the Winter Variety Mixed 12-Pack of cans and bottles, and on draft.  Look for this one to turn up at craft beer retailers in Alabama, Florida, and throughout SweetWater’s full distribution footprint.  With the pertinent background information now covered, let’s pop open this can and get to some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit from SweetWater Brewing Company

Appearance: Squeeze Box presents itself as a copper-hued orange in color.  Held to direct light, these deep, burnt oranges gain intensity and brilliance.  The beer is completely clear and displays a lively carbonation activity surging skyward to feed the head.  Speaking of that head, the pour produced two fingers of creamy, white foam that slowly falls to a tight, lasting half finger. The foam proves that it has some good stick to it by painting patterns of lace across the glass.

Aroma: The aromatic profile of this beer is absolutely dominated by grapefruit zest and juice.  Incredibly citrusy and inviting.  Surprisingly, the hop presence is not as pungent as one might expect from an IPA brewed by SweetWater.  Instead, a more reserved tropical hop presence is here to lend notes of citrus, pineapple and mango to further support the showcased grapefruit.  I believe “alluring” is the proper word to use here.

Taste: The grapefruit certainly came to play here and it once again leads the way.  That grapefruit character is ridiculously clean and allows you to experience every aspect of the fruit: pith, meat, juice and zest.  The hops meld easily with the grapefruit and further intensify this juicy experience by adding notes of tangerine, mango, papaya, and an extra punch of grapefruit bitterness.  The malt sweetness is nicely amplified to act as a lovely counterbalance to the sharp and bitter qualities of the grapefruit.  A lot of thought went into creating this balancing note in a way that avoids being cloyingly sweet or distracting from the added grapefruit, and it is spot on.  Mighty tasty.

Mouthfeel: This brew is on the lighter side of medium in body with a big carbonation presence.  This wonderfully crisp sip creates an experience that is easy drinking and outstandingly refreshing.  The ABV at 6.1% is nicely hidden and only tickles the throat occasionally with the faintest of heat.  Spoiler alert: the aftertaste is all grapefruit goodness.

Final Thoughts: There is no denying that Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit is another home-run from SweetWater Brewing Company.  The grapefruit is superbly presented, translating in both flavor and aroma as incredibly clean, natural and refreshing.  The hop varietals utilized here were the perfect selections to support and complement the featured grapefruit while taking nothing away from it.  With all of that said, what I really dig about this beer is the slightly elevated malt presence that tempers the bitter grapefruit with just enough sweetness.  It is reminiscent of sprinkling sugar on your morning grapefruit, and it is flawlessly executed.  If fruit-forward IPAs are your jam, make a note to try some Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit during its current release as a winter seasonal.  Prost!

Smokey and the Brett next up in Dank Tank from SweetWater Brewing

unnamed (6)SweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia) recently announced that Smokey and the Brett India Pale Ale with Brett will be the next release in the Dank Tank Series.

Back in June, thieves brazenly rolled up to SweetWater Brewing Company and took two flat-bed trailers packed with 3,272 cases of freshly packaged craft beer.  Just as they thought they had committed the perfect heist, the beers were quickly located because the not so bright desperados failed to realize the trailers were rockin’ some serious GPS recovery capabilities (click here to read more about this story).

When news of this situation broke, my first thought was that this whole ordeal had “future Dank Tank release” written all over it.  Sure enough, this caper provided the proper inspiration and Smokey and the Brett was created.  Since Dank Tank offerings challenge SweetWater brewers to explore their creativity by dabbling with new ingredients and/or brewing practices, this 7.3% ABV India Pale Ale received a slow fermentation with Brettanomyces wild yeast to lend the beer a pop of “acidity and tartness” to interact with the style’s expected hoppy bitterness.  The signature funkiness of the Brett mingles with aromatic and flavor notes of grapefruit and apricot. For a bit more information about the inspiration behind this brew, here is the full story from the bottle’s label:

Hard up and flat broke, El Danko couldn’t stop the shakes from SweetWater withdrawals, jonesing for the brews he most wanted.

Down but not out, El Danko doubled down and went big to solve his problem once and for all.  In the wee hours, El Danko and trusted accomplice El Putzo jacked two beer trailers from the brewery packed with over 69,000 bottles of SweetWater brew! (True story, check it at swb.beer/newsreel)

Danko and Putzo hightailed it to their batwingcave, ready to throw down and fade out.  Not the sharpest duo, they missed the GPS trackers on the trailers and were nabbed by Ol’ Smokey and Detective Dick Farachi before they could suck down their first six pack.

WE ADMIRE THE BALLS, BUT NOT THE BRAINS!

Smokey and the Brett officially releases at the brewery on Wednesday, August 31.  If you cannot make it to the brewery for the launch party, look for this brew to turn up in 22 oz. bottles in Alabama, Florida and wherever you normally find Dank Tank releases within SweetWater’s distribution footprint.  Prost!
