Sprecher Brewing Co. Unveils New-Look Packaging for Year-Round Beers

Sprecher-300x297Sprecher Brewing Co. (Glendale, Wisconsin) recently announced that the packaging for their lineup of Year-Round brews has underwent a full redesign.

In early 2016, Sprecher Brewing began to hint that change was imminent when they released that year’s winter Seasonal.  No longer wearing the name Winter Brew and the “familiar shiny label bearing a coat of arms”, Winter Lager hit shelves with updated packaging depicting Old Man Winter with a “more contemporary art reflecting the season, the style and . . . a visual reference to the company’s founder, Randy Sprecher.”  While the beer on the inside of the bottle remained the same, the new artwork proved to be more engaging and eye-catching when displayed in a cooler or on a shelf.  After the changes in artwork for Winter Lager – and the Seasonals that followed – received plenty of positive feedback, it was then decided to complete the transition by redesigning all packaging for the brewery’s Year-Round brews to also portray new images that “share humor, a reference to the particular beer style, and yes, a character resembling Randy Sprecher.”  The affected Year-Round brews are as follows:

  • Abbey Triple
  • Black Bavarian Style Lager
  • Hefe Weiss
  • India Pale Ale
  • Special Amber Vienna-style Lager

The decision for this redesign is best summed up in the following quote from Sprecher president Jeff Hamilton:

“We feel the new designs better represent our beers and our company. Because of the Germanic look of our old packaging, too often people unfamiliar with the brand mistakenly assume Sprecher is a German brewery, or a brewery that has been around for generations. We wanted people to get Sprecher, to know at first glance that while we make superior versions of traditional European styles and we have fun doing it, our company is neither old world nor old school.  Customers can continue to expect flavorful beers brewed to the highest standards. That will never change.”
– Jeff Hamilton, President of Sprecher Brewing Co.

The freshly updated look for Sprecher’s Year-Round beers is expected to begin hitting shelves in Alabama, Florida, Wisconsin and throughout the rest of the brewery’s distribution network by mid-March.  While on your next beer run, be on the lookout for this new-look packaging and pick up a sixer or two to revisit the tasty offerings of Sprecher Brewing Co.  Prost!

The Australian Brewery Launches Distribution in the United States

AusBrew_editedAustralian Brewery (Sydney, Australia) has announced that they have begun distribution in the United States with three of their craft beer offerings: Australian Pale Ale, New World Pilsner and Saison D’Heretique.

“The iconic Aussie craft beer producers at the multi-award winning Australian Brewery” are proud to announce that they have officially launched in the United States to properly introduce the American craft beer community to the culture and flavors of Australia.  By avoiding the use of additives or preservatives, “the kings of the Southern Hemisphere craft beer movement at Australian Brewery . . . [produce] fine tasting, crisp and refreshing brews for both the seasoned beer connoisseur and occasional beer drinkers alike.”

For the initial launch, Australian Brewery will enter the American market with the following three offerings:

  • Australian Pale Ale – Inspired by the Australian pacific pale ale style, this cloudy pale beer is to be admired before immersing yourself in the rich aromas of citrus and passionfruit that only galaxy hops can give. This characteristically cloudy Australian ale is crisp and refreshing, full of truly distinctive aromas that make for a perfect mix of flavour and drinkability.  ABV – 4.8%  IBUs – 26
  • New World Pilsner – Australian Brewery’s New World Pilsner has a German feel with an Aussie spin. Taking the palest of Australian malts and combining them with powerful perfumed new world hops, Australian Brewery has produced a Pilsner that is simply refreshing. With crisp and bitter characteristics, the New World Pilsner will leave you wanting more long after that last drop strikes your palate.  ABV – 4.8%  IBUs – 36
  • Saison D’Heretique – This is a saintly saison, lovingly crafted with both French & Belgian yeasts generating a delicate and light beer that packs a hefty punch of white pepper, clove and citrus on the palate with licorice, clove, citrus and pepper on the aroma.  ABV – 6.2%  IBUs – 30

The three beers above are available now at craft beer establishments throughout the U.S. on draft and in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans (suggested retail price of $13 to $16 per 6-pack). If these offerings from Australian Brewery have piqued your interest but you are unable the find them, the brewery suggests that you politely ask the folks at your favorite craft beer retail shop or bar to begin carrying Saison D’Heretique, Pale Ale and New World Pilsner.  Prost!

Terrapin Beer Co. Expands IPA Lineup with Release of Cumulus Lupulus

unnamed (4)_editedTerrapin Beer Co. (Athens, Georgia) has officially announced that Cumulus Lupulus Imperial India Pale Ale will be released in late-March as the newest addition to the brewery’s Monster Beer Tour.

To join in on the hazy IPA movement that has been incredibly popular as of late, Terrapin Beer Co. will soon be adding Cumulus Lupulus to their Monster Beer Tour, a series that was “originally created after Georgia raised the ABV cap from 6.0% to 14%.”  Since these beers represent some of the biggest and boldest beers in Terrapin’s portfolio, Cumulus Lupulus arrives as an 8.1% ABV, 101 IBU Imperial IPA boasting “over four pounds of Amarillo, Citra, Galaxy, and Mosaic hops per barrel.”  To keep the bitterness under control, the brewers “shifted most of the hop additions to the whirlpool . . . to bring out the incredible aroma and flavors of the hops by not driving off oils and volatiles as well as not extracting too much bitterness.”  Finally, Cumulus Lupulus was then left unfiltered to produce a hazy hop experience filled with “tropical, juicy aromas [that] give way to a smooth bitterness and a full mouthfeel.”

“Over the last 15 years, we’ve brewed a ton of IPA styles, ranging from Session IPAs to Black Belgian IPAs, and everything in between. We’ve never done an unfiltered IPA before because it’s more fragile to package and distribute, so we’re excited to launch Cumulus Lupulus.”

Dustin Watts, VP of Sales and Marketing at Terrapin Beer Co.

Cumulus Lupulus will officially release in late March and will be available while supplies last.  This limited release offering will be available in 12 oz. cans and on draft at select craft beer establishments found in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and throughout the rest of Terrapin’s distribution area. Take notice, hop fiends – Cumulus Lupulus will only be available in limited quantities, so keep an eye out for this one when it drops later this month.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Mulberry Road Dubbel from the Breweries of the Alabama Brewers Guild

As ABGplate1000_editedTampa Bay Beer Week nears its conclusion, this week’s edition of Tasting Notes finds us taking a liquid journey back home to Alabama via the Mulberry Road Dubbel, a collaboration beer brewed by the many breweries of the Alabama Brewers Guild.

Not too long ago, we informed you all of the release of Mulberry Road as the third installment in the Alabama Brewers Guild Capital Series (click here to read more).  Brewed and released annually as a collaboration between brewery members of the Alabama Brewers Guild, the beers of the Capital Series are crafted to trace the history of Alabama’s five historic capitals with the final beer to arrive in 2019 when the state celebrates its 200th birthday.

For the 2017 Capital Series release, the Alabama Brewers Guild honors Cahawba, the first permanent capital of the State of Alabama from 1820-1826.  Drawing inspiration from “the stately mulberry trees lining the streets of the scenic town of Old Cahawba,” the brewers of the Alabama Brewers Guild created Mulberry Road to be Belgian-style Dubbel that features “the natural sweetness of the mulberry.”  This limited release offering is available now in 12 oz. cans and on draft throughout the great state of Alabama.  Now that we are caught up on the background information, let’s pop this can, get to sippin’ and take some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Mulberry Road Belgian-style Dubbel from the breweries of the Alabama Brewers Guild

Appearance: Mulberry Road pours a mahogany brown that holds deep red hues that span from dark cherry to garnet.  When presented with direct light, the browns brighten and the beer displays tinges of red-orange. The body is clear and shows off a lazy carbonation presence.  A somewhat aggressive pour produced only half a finger of light tan foam that dissipated almost as quickly as it formed.

Aroma: This beer’s aroma leaves no doubt that this is indeed a Dubbel.  The malts arrive first with a rush of sweet caramel.  The Belgian yeast then takes over with banana and just a touch of clove.  Behind this lies a dark fruit character that is bold and sweet.  I am no expert when it comes to this fruit, but I can only imagine this to be the mulberries introducing themselves.

Taste:  Those signature Dubbel qualities show up first once again as they wash over the palate with a wonderfully restrained level of Belgian sweetness.  Caramel, a dash of cocoa, dark fruit and clove lay down a foundation of flavors sourced from the malts and Belgian yeast.  Behind that lies just a bit of earthy and floral hop tones that blend in subtly with those malt and yeast flavors.  Wandering in at their own pace, the mulberry notes sit high upon this Dubbel base to lend a distinct berry presence that has qualities of sweet and tart blackberries, rich prune and soft plum.

Mouthfeel:  This beer is spot-on medium in body with a medium carbonation level.  Sweet on the palate, this Dubbel has some stick to it but eventually fades away.  The ABV builds a soothing warmth in the throat, but does not hinder the beer’s drinkability.  To allow the drinker the chance to further ponder its flavors, an aftertaste of Belgian yeast qualities and sweet, dark fruits lingers softly behind.

Final Thoughts:  The first thing that must be said about Mulberry Road is that its brewers absolutely nailed the Dubbel style with this recipe.  The essential and easily-recognizable characteristics of the Belgian yeast and malts are wonderfully on point, and the hops only present the needed level of balance that translates as a soft, floral touch.  Second and most importantly, the decision to use this stunning Dubbel base to act as the vehicle for the featured mulberries was ingenious.  The mulberry’s dark, sweet and lightly tart character is more than at home with the dark fruit and yeast esters (banana and clove) already present in the style’s profile.  This union allows the mulberry to be featured, experienced and enjoyed within a beer that is strong and capable enough to not allow those bold flavors and aromas to overpower and run wild.  All is in order . . . calm, sophisticated, interesting, and engaging.  The beer has a soothing voice that softly speaks its intended purpose: to tell a story of Alabama history through the artistic medium of craft beer.  Beautifully done and we simply cannot wait for the next story headed our way from the Alabama Brewers Guild Capital Series.  Prost!

Heavy Seas Beer Recommissions Smooth Sail as Summer Seasonal

32907064170_abe6a6eae4_zHeavy Seas Beer (Baltimore, Maryland) has announced that Smooth Sail Summer Ale will return in April as the brewery’s Summer Seasonal.

After a good amount of thought, experimentation and time, the brewers at Heavy Seas developed Smooth Sail Summer Ale with a recipe intended solely for refreshment.  They achieved this goal thanks to the use of more than 20% malted wheat, American hops that were added late in the boil to add a bright but balancing crispness, and “a neutral strain of ‘wheat’ yeast to produce a clean tasting beer that is delicate on the palate.”  To bring it all together, orange and lemon peel finish the beer off with “a fruity, citrus aroma – without adding sweetness.”  When you consider all of the above and the fact that this offering clocks in at a very sessionable 4.5% ABV, Smooth Sail more than lives up to its billing of being a smooth and easy-drinking Summer Ale.

“Because it’s available in cans, it’s the perfect beer for sailing, trips to the park, hiking, or just sitting on the beach with your friends,” says Heavy Seas Founder, Hugh Sisson. “It is the perfect beer for folks with an active outdoor lifestyle during the summer months.”

“For anyone who is looking for a good summer drinker, this beer is the one,” says Sisson. “Climb Aboard!”

Smooth Sail Summer Ale will officially hit shelves and taps beginning in late-March/early-April and will hang out throughout the summer months.  This Seasonal offering will be available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer bars, restaurants and retailers in Alabama, Florida, Maryland and throughout the rest of the Heavy Seas distribution network.  Once it makes its official return for the summer, be sure to keep Smooth Sail Summer Ale in mind the next time you find yourself in search of the perfect beer to fill the cooler before heading out to the river, lake, beach, etc.  Prost!

TBBW Event: Sun King Brewery Tap Takeover at The Ale and The Witch

alewitchlogoOn Friday, March 10 at 3 p.m., The Ale and The Witch (111 2nd Ave NE Saint Petersburg, Florida) will welcome Sun King Brewery (Indianapolis, Indiana) to Tampa Bay Beer Week by hosting a very special Tap Takeover event.

What began as a pipe dream shared between two men – Dave Colt and Clay Robinson – while spending “long hours brewing, scrubbing, and polishing . . . brewery equipment” at a previous brewing job, Sun King Brewery finally became a reality in 2009 when Colt and Robinson went all in and sold their first keg.  After just a few short years since that first sale, Sun King has established a strong reputation after earning several medals at the Indiana Brewers Cup, Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup, and the brewery is now recognized as the second-largest beer brewer in the state of Indiana.

Not normally available in the state of Florida, Sun King Brewery happens to be in town visiting for Tampa Bay Beer Week (TBBW), and The Ale and The Witch is more than happy to host this respected brewery for a rare Tap Takeover on March 10.  The following seven Sun King offerings will be pouring on draft during this event:

Featured Draft Beers from Sun King Brewery

  • Cherry Busey – A Flanders-style Oud Bruin Ale produced using a complex cocktail of wild yeasts and aged in a bevy of barrels. A multitude of Montmorency cherries were lovingly liberated to give the beer its tart cherry tang.  Cherry Busey was the winner of the Bronze Medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival® in the Belgian-Style Fruit Beer Category.  ABV – 6.9%  IBUs – 23
  • Old Fashioned Elixir – This beer starts with a base of Velvet Fog Belgian Quad, a King Reserve Series offering that took the 2012 gold medal at the World Beer Cup, that is then aged in rye barrels with Balaton Cherries & orange peel for that classic cocktail creation. ABV – 11.6%
  • Osiris Pale Ale – An assertive West Coast-Style Pale with a distinct citrus hop punch.  ABV – 5.6%  IBUs – 50
  • Ring of Dingle – A rich and roasty Irish-Style Dry Stout with a clean, dry finish. The beer is named after a scenic road network in Ireland that starts and ends in the city of Dingle.  Ring of Dingle was the winner of the Silver Medal in the Classic Irish-Dry Stout Category at the 2012 World Beer Cup, and the winner of the Gold Medal in the Irish-Style Dry Stout category at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival.  ABV – 4.6%  IBUs – 34
  • Stupid Sexy Flanders – A traditional Belgian-Style Flanders Oud Bruin, Stupid Sex Flanders is fermented with wild yeasts, Lactobacillus and Brettanomyces, which impart tart cherry flavors to balance the beer’s malt sweetness.  ABV – 6.5%  IBUs – 23
  • Sunlight Cream Ale – Celebrates American brewing tradition by balancing smooth malt complexity with a crisp, clean finish.  Sunlight was the winner of the Gold Medal in the Golden or Blonde Ale category at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival®, and the Silver Medal at the 2010 World Beer Cup in the Golden or Blonde Ale category.  ABV – 5.3%  IBUs – 20
  • Whip Fight – A bourbon barrel aged Wee Heavy in which rich toffee flavor takes a Burt Lancaster-sized twist with the addition of pecan and semi-sweet chocolate.  ABV – 10.6%  IBUs – 30

The beers above will begin pouring when The Ale and The Witch opens at 3 p.m. on March 10, and they will be available until the kegs run dry or the bar closes.  Since this is a pay as you go event, no tickets are needed to enjoy these delicious brews.  We must remind you that Sun King Brewery and their beers are not normally available in Florida, so these beers will not last long.  With that in mind, go ahead and make plans now to visit The Ale and The Witch on Friday to get in on what is sure to be one hell of a TBBW Tap Takeover with Sun King Brewery.  Prost!

Blackberry Daze IPA Launches as New Year-Round from Anchor Brewing Co.

blackberry-daze-bottle___pint_shotAnchor Brewing Co. (San Francisco, California) recently announced that Blackberry Daze IPA has officially joined the brewery’s portfolio of Year-Round offerings.

When the time arrived for Anchor Brewing Co. to create a fruit-infused India Pale Ale, the brewers decided to represent their home state by selecting the blackberry, a berry “once wildly rampant in California”, as the featured fruit.  Blackberry Daze IPA receives a solid foundation of hops in the brewhouse, but the majority of the beer’s flavor and aroma arrives once “the fruit is added during secondary fermentation.”  It is here that this brew receives a dry-hopping with a “special blend of loamy, herbaceous hops” to marry with “the brightness and deep complexity of the blackberries.”  This all results in a 6.5% ABV IPA that is “a funky synthesis of rich earth and ripe fruit, hop bitterness and blackberry tartness, with alluring color and aromas up front, sublimely intense flavors, and a refreshingly dry finish.”

“Blackberry Daze IPA is a natural continuum to our growing list of beers made with fruit,” said Anchor Brewmaster Scott Ungermann.  “When using fruit in an IPA, we want something that stands up to and also pairs nicely with the hops. Blackberries uniquely compliment the hops, rather than contrast with them. We add some fruit to the brew kettle towards the end of the boil, giving the beer a nice berry jam aroma. Then we add fresh berries in the cellar, imparting a sharp tartness that compliments the beer’s hoppy flavors. The result is an IPA with upfront bitterness that’s countered by tartness and slight sweetness from the berries, creating a play between tart, sweet, and bitter.”

Blackberry Daze IPA is available now in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft.  Fruit-lovin’ hop heads can track this one down at select craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, California and throughout the rest of Anchor Brewing’s expansive distribution footprint.  Having achieved legendary status in American craft brewing, it is well known that Anchor Brewing Co. only sends out the highest quality offerings to represent them on shelves and taps across this country.  With that truth in mind, be sure to check out Blackberry Daze IPA the next time you find yourself in need of a fruit-infused IPA.  Prost!
