Rogue Dead Guy Ale Gets a Fresh New Look

deadguycansRogue Ales (Newport, Oregon) has redesigned the packaging artwork for their long-standing Dead Guy Ale.  Additionally, this offering is now available in 12 oz. cans for the first time.

The folks at Rogue Ales brewed and bottled their first batch of Dead Guy Ale back in 1990 “as a Dia de los Muertos beer for a Portland Tex-Mex restaurant.”  This German Maibock-inspired American Ale was immediately embraced by the craft beer community and it remains a fan-favorite offering 26 years later.  Although the packaging has experienced subtle tweaks over the years, Dead Guy Ale has always worn a label depicting “a beer-clutching skeleton with crossed arms and a beehive hat sitting on a barrel.”  Since this image is easily one of the most recognized logos in craft beer, Rogue Ales has gone with a more streamlined approach to Dead Guy Ale’s new look by boldly focusing on the skeleton.  In doing so, the updated packaging manages to be even more engaging and eye-catching on the shelf.

“There were a number of iterations, but the idea came out pretty quickly,” said Rogue’s Creative Director Hagen Moore. “We wanted to make the Dead Guy larger than life, and have him stand out in a simple and unique way.”

Dead Guy Ale’s new look can be seen on 12 oz. and 22 oz. bottles, and in all new 12 oz. cans starting February 15.  You can expect to find these 22 oz. bottles, 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and 6-packs of 12 oz. cans at craft beer retailers in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of the expansive distribution footprint of Rogue Ales.  Look for Dead Guy Ale’s fresh packaging during your next beer run to revisit this craft beer legend.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: The Unkindness from Barley Mow Brewing Company

img_20170212_150838_923The work week gently fades to black as we get into some Tasting Notes covering The Unkindness Black Ale from Barley Mow Brewing Company (Largo, Florida).

Fondly referred to as “the beer that started it all” for Barley Mow Brewing Company, The Unkindness is an American Black Ale (a.k.a. a Cascadian Dark Ale or Black IPA) that has been named after a flock of ravens.  This offering blends an assertive hop bill with a dark malt backbone to provide a dualistic experience that boasts notes of pine, grapefruit, chocolate and coffee.  The Unkindness is a Core/Year-Round release that is available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer establishments located within Barley Mow’s full distribution area.

Alright, it is now time to grab a pen and a glass to embrace the darkness residing within The Unkindness!

Tasting Notes for The Unkindness Black Ale from Barley Mow Brewing Company

Appearance: The Unkindness settles into the glass as an incredibly dark brown, nearly black colored brew.  Held to the light, the beer remains opaque but does display some richer brown hues.  The pour built a perfect two fingers of creamy, tan foam.   Head retention is very good, but the showstopper here is the elaborate lace patterns that sheet the glass and completely coat it by drink’s end.

Aroma: As the beer pours, juicy grapefruit and citrus notes anxiously fill the air to greet the nose.  As the beer settles, those hop notes mingle nicely with a building earthy grain quality supported by notes of dark roast and coffee.  Fresh tobacco and a wisp of chocolate bring it all together to beautifully round off the aromatic profile.

Taste: The really interesting characteristic here is how the hops effortlessly weave themselves into every aspect of the flavor experience.  They first appear innocently and playfully as a subtle pop of grapefruit and pine.  Just as the roasted malts push forward to expose notes of bittersweet chocolate and black coffee, the hops slide in to cradle them with a complementary bitterness of citrus zest.  Hearty, roasted grains then meet resinous pine to strike a balance between dankness and sweetness. A gentle herbaceous quality saunters in at the end to leave a final, lasting impression courtesy of the hops.

Mouthfeel: This brew is medium in body and has a medium carbonation level.  On the palate, the beer confidently walks a tightrope, teetering on the edges of both bitter and sweet.  At 7.4% ABV, the beer does bring a bit of warmth but it is nothing excessive or unpleasant.  The aftertaste leaves lingering tones of dark roasted malts, grapefruit zest and touch of herbal qualities.

Final Thoughts:  The Unkindness proves to be a wonderful study in the idea of balance.  The sweet, roasted malts and assertive hops engage in a delightful tug of war that results in a beautiful stalemate that truly captivates the senses.  Although the hops can be fully enjoyed throughout the experience, the malts temper their bitterness with meticulous precision.  In a loud but composed proclamation, the hops and malts both voice their worth with a more than justified display of hubris.  If these ingredients – and the brewers behind them – did not have this cocksure level of conviction, the beer resting in the glass before us would not be nearly as delicious, easy-drinking or impressive.  Impressive . . . that is indeed the best word to describe The Unkindness.  This beer is a remarkable representation of the American Black Ale/Cascadian Dark Ale/Black IPA, and we could easily make an argument for it being a benchmark for the style.  Ridiculously good.  Prost!

Boulevard Brewing Company Releases Bottles of Rye on Rye on Rye

boulevardryeonryeonryeBoulevard Brewing Company (Kansas City, Missouri) recently announced that bottles of Rye on Rye on Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Ale are available now for a limited time.

First released as a draft-only offering in 2016, Rye on Rye on Rye has returned as a Smokestack Series Limited Release – a series of “bold, complex ales [that] include both traditional styles and daring experiments, allowing [Boulevard] brewers to explore some of the more esoteric realms of their craft.”  Rye on Rye on Rye expands upon the legacy of the classic Rye on Rye by incorporating an additional step in the aging process. This offering begins as a “rich, tawny Rye Ale” that is then “aged in first-use rye whiskey barrels then transferred to yet another set of first-use rye whiskey barrels for a second aging, effectively resulting in “Rye on Rye on Rye.”  Weighing in at a sizable 14% ABV, Rye on Rye on Rye promises an experience loaded with caramel and distinct whiskey aromas and flavor notes of bread crust, caramel and toffee.

750 ml bottles of Rye on Rye on Rye are available now in the greater Kansas City area and this limited offering will soon become available in other select markets within Boulevard Brewing Co.’s distribution network.  The brewery hints that fans can expect to find Rye on Rye on Rye “in cities that typically see . . . DuClaw Brewing Co. Launches Sweet Baby Java as New Year-Round

sweebabyjavaDuClaw Brewing Company (Baltimore, Maryland) recently announced that Sweet Baby Java – Espresso Bean Infused Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter will be joining the brewery’s Year-Round lineup this spring.

Released as the first bottled variant of the brewery’s iconic Sweet Baby Jesus Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter, DuClaw Brewing Company found the inspiration to create Sweet Baby Java over two years ago when they “ran Sweet Baby [Jesus] through a Randall contact infuser filled with coffee beans.”  After that keg kicked in record time, the brewery has since featured the coffee-treated Sweet Baby Jesus at several events and received consistent, “overwhelmingly positive” feedback.  This being the case, the folks at DuClaw eventually “realized there needed to be a way to put this into a keg or bottle on a regular basis.”  After developing a large-scale process that involves a Hop Gun filled with coffee beans, Sweet Baby Java is now a reality.

“We spent a lot of time searching for the ideal bean and roast to transform Sweet Baby Jesus into Sweet Baby Java. From there we were able to scale up and leverage our giant contact infuser, the Hop Gun, using coffee beans instead of hops, and now we have Sweet Baby Java.”

– Dave Benfield, Founder of DuClaw Brewing Company

According to DuClaw Brewing Company’s Facebook page, Sweet Baby Java is a new Year-Round offering that will undergo a staggered launch during the months of spring.  This offering will eventually be available in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments in Florida and throughout the rest of DuClaw’s distribution footprint.  Watch those shelves and enjoy a little coffee with your peanut butter when Sweet Baby Java hits your local shelves and taps.  Prost!

Stone Brewing Introduces Jindia Pale Ale, Pataskala Red X IPA Returns

jindiapa_editedStone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) has announced plans to blitz spring with two Seasonal IPA releases in 2017, Stone Jindia Pale Ale and Stone Pataskala Red X IPA.

First up, we have the arrival of Stone Jindia Pale Ale as the newest Stone Imperial Seasonal.  This offering is a Double India Pale Ale that has been “instilled with ginger, juniper berries, lemon peel and lime peel” to mimic the notes you would find in an expertly blended gin.  With a hop bill consisting of Magnum, Cascade and Centennial hops, this special release comes together to display “the hop-forward component of a great IPA and also the complexity of aroma and flavors derived from gin botanicals.”  Stone Jindia Pale Ale is available now on draft and in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles.  This seasonal release can be found at craft beer establishments in Alabama, Florida, and throughout the rest of Stone Brewing’s U.S. distribution footprint.

“Our co-founder, Greg Koch, came up with the idea of an IPA with gin botanicals after we had done the Stone & Sierra Nevada NxS IPA, which had a portion of the beer aged in gin barrels,” said Jeremy Moynier, Senior Innovation Brewing Manager. “Along with hops, we added ginger, juniper berries, lemon peel and lime peel to create a truly unique beer.”

Patasklala_12oz_Print.pngTo bring even more hoppy goodness to spring, Stone Pataskala Red X IPA has returned once again as a Stone Seasonal release.  First brewed in September 2015 as a fundraising beer to support music and arts education programs in the hometown – Pataskala, Ohio – of Stone Brewing Co. co-founder Greg Koch, the popularity of Stone Pataskala Red X IPA only grew when it was given a much wider release in 2016.   Back for its third release, this Red India Pale Ale stays true to its unique recipe by featuring Red X malt, a special German malt variety that “is typically reserved for German amber lagers, Irish red ales and other mildly-hopped beers.”  Although mild is not a descriptor that can be used for the copious amounts of Mosaic, Amarillo and Cascade hops employed in this beer, the “cereal notes and biscuit undertones from the Red X malt” provide an interesting and distinctive balancing character to the herbal, citrus, stone fruit and pine notes sourced from those hops.  Stone Pataskala Red X IPA is also available now in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at restaurants and bars where beers from Stone Brewing Co. are normally found.

“We loved this beer and knew we had to bring it back this year,” said Moynier. “It’s a challenging beer to brew on the big scale with the amount of hops and Red X malt that we use. But I think when you taste it you will know it’s worth the effort! It has a beautiful balance of hops and malt and definitely makes you want to have more than one pint!”

If you have been looking to shake things up when it comes to your selection of IPAs, Stone Jindia Pale Ale and Stone Pataskala Red X IPA are both available now to do just that.  These Seasonal brews will be gone before you know it, so just keep them in mind the next time you hit your local craft beer retailer or bar.  Prost!

Oskar Blue Brewery and Hotbox Roasters Collaborate to Create Hotbox Coffee IPA

hotboxcoffeeipabanner_editedOskar Blues Brewery (Longmont, Colorado) has officially announced that Hotbox Coffee IPA will arrive in March as the brewery’s new spring Seasonal.

To take their coffee-infused beer collaborations to another level, Oskar Blues Brewery and Hotbox Roasters have decided to move in a more hop-centric direction this time around with the creation of Hotbox Coffee IPA.  This new seasonal starts with an American India Pale Ale foundation built from notes of “pine, citrus and mango from Simcoe hops.” The beer is then dosed with cold brew extract made from Ethiopian coffee beans – “sourced from a family farm in the East African nation exclusively for this beer” – to impart added tones of “cream, blueberry and cocoa.”  This all results in a 7.2% ABV, coffee-laced hop bomb that truly makes “strange bedfellows of uppers and downers.”

“We believe the citrus and fruit aromatics of an IPA, derived from the intense hops, pair well with the fruit of the coffee to produce a great, flavor-packed beer,” said Tim Matthews, head of brewing operations at Oskar Blues Brewery. “The combination of coffee and hops in the Hotbox IPA serve to compliment and reinforce the delicious flavors and aromas both offer in this match up.”

Hotbox Coffee IPA will make its official debut at the following three, simultaneous release parties hosted by the taprooms of Oskar Blues:

If you cannot make it to the launch events listed above, do not fret because this offering will then be sent out for distribution beginning in March.  Hotbox Coffee IPA will be available in 4-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments in Alabama, Florida and the remaining 48 states that comprise the Oskar Blues distribution network.  Although this Spring Seasonal will officially be available until May, you should not expect this one to last long on the shelves of your local beer shop.  Grab ’em when you see ’em.  Prost!

Blah Blah Blah IPA Goes Year-Round for 21st Amendment

21a-blahblahblah-can-230x376To provide hopheads with a new fix in 2017, 21st Amendment Brewery (San Leandro, California) has officially added Blah Blah Blah IPA to their Year-Round lineup.

In today’s world of craft beer, consumers have displayed a voracious and unending appetite for all things hoppy.  If “IPA” is somewhere in the beer’s title or description on a tap list, odds are that it is going to get some serious attention.  This style’s popularity is ever-growing and its varieties seem infinite – West Coast IPA, East Coast IPA, Double IPA, Triple IPA, White IPA, Black IPA, Hazy IPA, Coffee IPA, Rye IPA, and the list goes on and on and on . . .

To keep up with and stand out in a market that is currently inundated with these beers, 21st Amendment Brewery has released Blah Blah Blah IPA as “a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the popularity of the IPA style and all its sub-styles that have become part of craft beer conversations and offerings.”  The name may have been chosen to poke some fun, but the beer itself is quite serious when it comes to its hops.  Blah Blah Blah is an Imperial Red India Pale Ale that has been “jam packed with Mosaic, Citra and the latest Idaho 7 hop, and . . . 2 pounds per barrel of dry-hops” to impart all of the “noteworthy elements associated with hop’s bitterness, flavor and aroma.” For a clearer idea of what to expect from this new offering, here is how Shaun O’Sullivan, co-founder of 21st Amendment Brewery, describes Blah Blah Blah IPA:

“Baird Crystal 70 is the primary malt used and the nutty sweet character of this particular malt gives Blah Blah Blah a red hue while the addition of biscuit and dark Munich malts grant the brew a delicate toastiness,” adds O’Sullivan. “The bitterness is assertive, but balanced by a subtle sweetness—all part of the plan of course. Late in the boil we threw in a few aroma hops such as Centennial, Ahtanum, Amarillo and Mosaic which combined give to the beer a more hop-quenching flavor than our current IPA lineup.”

Blah Blah Blah IPA was officially released into distribution on Wednesday, February 1.  This new Year-Round offering is available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer establishments located in Florida and throughout the rest of 21st Amendment’s 25-state distribution area.  If this sounds like the beer for you, just walk into your favorite beer spot, look the bartender dead in the eye and confidently say, “I want a Blah Blah Blah IPA.” If done correctly, laughs, good times and a tasty brew are sure to follow.  Prost!
