Paulaner Pils Returns to the U.S.

Paulaner USA (White Plains, New York), the U.S. importer of the legendary Paulaner Brauerei (Munich, Germany) portfolio, has officially announced that Paulaner Pils will return to the United States in November 2020.

A recipe that has been refined by Paulaner since the mid-1800s, Paulaner Pils is a German-style Pilsner that “features a brilliant bright yellow color, floral hop aromas and a pleasant dry finish.” Coming in at a sessionable 4.9% ABV, Paulaner Pils is “a beer of formidable cleanliness and sophistication that delivers a clean, crisp taste.”

“We are excited to bring back our Paulaner Pils to the U.S. market,” says Steve Hauser, CEO of Paulaner USA. “Over the past few years there has been an increase in demand for sessionable products as an alternative to the fuller, IPA beers. Paulaner, being a German leader in easy-to-drink beers for centuries, has responded to this consumer trend with the reintroduction of our delicious Paulaner Pils to the U.S. market.

“At Paulaner, we enjoy catering to our consumers who know beer and appreciate our brand’s history. Since 1634, Paulaner has been dedicated to the art of brewing and we strictly follow the Reinheitsgebot, Germany’s beer purity law. To this day, we continue to stay true to our mastered brewing techniques and only use select, high-quality ingredients for the utmost taste and quality. Given this, we are delighted to bring back our beloved classic German Pilsner to our U.S. customers.”

Paulaner Pils is scheduled to hit the U.S. in November 2020 with availability in 4-packs of 16.9 oz. cans. You can expect to find this Year-Round offering at fine beer retailers located in Alabama, Florida, New York and throughout the rest of Paulaner USA’s nationwide distribution network. Prost!

Tasting Notes: Oktoberfest Bier from Paulaner Brauerei

For this installment of Tasting Notes, we do our part to keep Oktoberfest 2020 alive by getting into a pour of Oktoberfest Bier from Paulaner Brauerei (Munich, Germany).

Known as “Germany’s #1 Oktoberfest bier” and the “only bier served in Paulaner Oktoberfest tents,” Oktoberfest Bier is an Oktoberfest-style Lager that is “deep golden [in] color, full-bodied and wonderfully mellow, with a balanced harmonious taste and the pleasant fragrance of hops.” Coming in at 6% ABV, Oktoberfest Bier is “stronger and bolder than the usual lager” but still built for all day drinking during Oktoberfest festivities.

Oktoberfest Bier is available now and will hang around for as long as supplies last during Oktoberfest Season. You can expect to find this Seasonal Release available in 6-packs of 11.2 oz. bottles at select craft beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida, New York and throughout the rest of Paulaner USA’s nationwide distribution network.

Now that the particulars are out of the way, let’s crack open a few bottles, fill a proper stein and have our own private Oktoberfest over some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Oktoberfest Bier from Paulaner Brauerei

Appearance: A quick, jubilant pour produces a Lager that is a rich gold in color and capped with over 2.5 fingers of fluffy white foam. When held to direct light, the beer glows as the golds brighten and take on some vibrantly rich straw yellow tones. The beer is pristine in clarity and shows off countless streams of carbonation bubbles dutifully rising to feed the top cap. Head retention is quite good, slowly falling to a lasting 1/4 finger that fills the mug’s dimples with pockets of lace after each pull.

Aroma: Noble hops are all over the nose, supplying an abundance of peppery, earthy and grassy notes. A grace of fruity melon eventually surfaces and then quickly gives way to a clean presence of pilsner malts.

Taste: That pilsner malt note carries over and sets the foundation of the flavor profile with some slightly sweet cereal notes alongside just a touch of toasted bread. The hops quickly balance those malty characteristics with a good deal of peppery and grassy notes that are tempered by a bit of melon and fresh pop of floral sweetness.

Mouthfeel: On the light side of medium in body with a healthy carbonation presence, this Oktoberfest is incredibly crisp, refreshing and easy-drinking. The balance is a damn near perfect mix of sweet maltiness and bright hoppiness, further raising the beer’s high level of drinkability. The 6% ABV is well-hidden and makes it far too easy to crush several mugs in a sitting. The aftertaste is just a whisper of grassy and floral hop notes.

Final Thoughts: After spending a little time with Paulaner’s Oktoberfest Bier, there is no doubt as to why this is a best-selling Oktoberfest offering in Germany. Thanks to its wonderfully enticing aromas and flavors and a level of drinkability that is off the charts, this Oktoberfest Bier is the perfect brew to drink liters at a time because it will not last long enough to warm up. If you are missing those Oktoberfest vibes right now, just go get a sixer of Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier and get your festive fix while it is still available. Prost!

Paulaner USA Celebrates Oktoberfest With Two Beers in 2020

Paulaner USA (White Plains, New York), the U.S. importer of the legendary Paulaner Brauerei (Munich, Germany) portfolio, has officially announced that Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier and Paulaner Oktoberfest Märzen will both be readily available in the U.S. this fall during Oktoberfest Season.

With the cancellation of the official Oktoberfest celebrations in Munich this year, Paulaner – “one of only six breweries allowed to serve at the official event and even serves the #1 selling bier” – is making it so we all can enjoy 200+ years of Oktoberfest tradition at home by providing U.S. beer drinkers with the following two Oktoberfest offerings (descriptions sourced directly from the brewery’s press release):

  • Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier – This golden Oktoberfest lager is Germany’s #1 Oktoberfest bier. It is also the only bier served in Paulaner Oktoberfest tents today and the favorite bier at the Munich Oktoberfest. Brewed once a year, and only available while supplies last, Oktoberfest Bier is the pinnacle of German brewing: deep golden color, full-bodied and wonderfully mellow, with a balanced harmonious taste and the pleasant fragrance of hops. At 6% ABV, it is stronger and bolder than the usual lager.
  • Paulaner Oktoberfest Märzen – This amber bier style was developed more than 200 years ago to celebrate the original Munich Oktoberfest. The Märzen name originates from “March bier” because it was historically brewed in March, to be available for its peak flavor by the Oktoberfest celebration. Today, this style is available year-round in the U.S., due to popular demand.
This full-bodied bier with its rich malt flavor and dark toffee notes, has an underlying fruitiness and masterful hop balance. It will instantly turn your home into an Oktoberfest celebration. ABV – 5.8%

Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier and Paulaner Oktoberfest Märzen are available now and will be hanging around through Oktoberfest Season (Paulaner Oktoberfest Märzen is actually available Year-Round in the U.S.). You can expect to find both of these legendary Oktoberfest beers available in 6-packs of 11.2 oz. bottles at select craft beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida, New York and throughout the rest of Paulaner USA’s nationwide distribution network.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Grapefruit Radler from Paulaner Brauerei

For this installment of Tasting Notes, we find refreshment and cool comfort on a hot summer’s day by getting into a few cans of Grapefruit Radler from  Paulaner Brauerei (Munich, Germany).

Developed to be the “perfect complement wherever you are during the warm summer months,” Paulaner Grapefruit Radler is a thirst-quenching Radler that “combines 50% Paulaner’s classic Münchner Lager and 50% naturally hazy, grapefruit infusion.” Coming in at a super sessionable 2.5% ABV, Paulaner Grapefruit Radler is “a fruity-tart refreshment that is 100% natural and not too sweet.”

Paulaner Grapefruit Radler officially hit the U.S. in June and will be available throughout the summer months. You can expect to find this new offering available in 4-packs of 16.9 oz. cans at fine beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, New York and throughout the rest of Paulaner USA’s nationwide distribution network.

Now that we know how Paulaner put together and packaged this offering for all of us to enjoy in the U.S., let’s crack open these cans and see how this Radler stacks up over some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Grapefruit Radler from Paulaner Brauerei

Appearance: Poured from a 16.9 oz. can into a Spiegelau lager glass, this Radler presents itself as a blush pink in color and is capped with nearly two fingers of airy, bright white foam. When held to direct light, soft yellow and orange tones surface but the overall look remains a glowing pink. The beer is quite hazy, but a fast-moving carbonation presence can still be seen zipping around within. Head retention is short lived, quickly falling away to nothing and leaves no lace behind.

Aroma: Sweet grapefruit dominates the nose with a mix of grapefruit soda and grapefruit juice. Beer aromatics are muted, but there is a gentle malty sweetness lying underneath all of the grapefruit.

Taste: The grapefruit is quick to assert itself here as well. That grapefruit soda note is present, but its sweetness is tempered, balanced and elevated with added notes of grapefruit zest and fresh, tart grapefruit sprinkled with sugar. The base beer has more of a chance to make itself known by turning up in the finish with clean Pilsner notes and a lingering tinge of Noble hops.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied with a bright carbonation, this Radler is wonderfully light, refreshing and easy-drinking. It leans more to the sweet side, but there is enough tartness present from the grapefruit to balance and the base beer dries things out nicely in the finish. As one would assume, the 2.5% ABV is not at all noticeable and this further increases the crushable nature of the beer. The aftertaste is just a touch of grapefruit zest.

Final Thoughts: True to style, Paulaner Grapefruit Radler is ridiculously tasty, thirst-quenching and approachable. It definitely drinks more like a soda than a beer, and we view that as good thing (especially when the heat index pushes temps over the 100º mark . . . like it did today). With that said and for clarity, we are talking about a naturally sweetened soda because there is nothing artificial tasting about this beer. All flavors and aromas are clean, natural and incredibly enticing. All of this makes Paulaner Grapefruit Radler a perfect choice to pair with brunch, to cool you off after a long day of yard work, or to enjoy during just about any summertime activity. Make sure you keep an eye out for this one whenever you venture out on your next beer run. Prost!

Tasting Notes – The Classics: Hefe-Weizen from Paulaner Brauerei

PaulanerHefePourX600For this special edition of Tasting Notes, we crack open a few pints of OG haze and get reacquainted with the highly respected classic that is Hefe-Weizen from Paulaner Brauerei (Munich, Germany).

Regarded as “the #1 wheat beer in Germany and one of the world’s favorites”, Paulaner Hefe-Weizen is a traditional, unfiltered Hefeweizen-style Wheat Beer that is “naturally cloudy and silky gold under a really strong head of foam.”  Proudly boasting a “perfectly balanced mix of aromas and refreshing taste”, this offering’s sensory profile features a “hint of banana aroma” and “[traces] of mango and pineapple” on the palate.  Coming in at just 5.5% ABV, Hefe-Weizen is a truly “superb biergarten or outdoor drinking bier.”

Paulaner Hefe-Weizen is available Year-Round in 4-packs of 16.9 oz. cans (newly released), 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles, 500ml bottles and on draft.  You can expect to find this iconic brew at fine beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of Paulaner’s distribution network in the U.S.

Alrighty . . . now that we have those particulars out of the way, let’s put these new pint cans to good use and get into some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Hefe-Weizen from Paulaner Brauerei

Appearance: The most careful of pours produced a stunning Hefeweizen that is a sunburst orange in color and capped with over three fingers of creamy, bright white foam.  When held to direct light, the beer has a solid dark orange core that radiates outward to the edges of the glass with brighter orange tones and a spectrum of yellows. The beer has that quintessential Hefeweizen cloudiness, but a slow and steady carbonation presence can still be seen swirling about in the haze.  Head retention is spot on for the style, falling ever so slowly to a lasting half finger that coats the glass with super creamy lace after each pull.

Aroma: The yeast is all over the aromatics, offering pronounced notes of banana and clove.  A bit of Noble hop spice and a touch of citrus surfaces alongside a clean, bready wheat presence, but . . . seriously . . . this profile is all about that Hefeweizen yeast.  Absolutely heavenly.

Taste: Lemon, orange and just a grace of tropical pineapple open the flavor profile in conjunction with a pure, clean note of toasted wheat.  Spicy and earthy Noble hop notes then carry the beer’s fruitiness into a dynamic yeast character filled with notes of banana, clove and bubblegum. The flavors are elegant in their complexity, but remain incredibly approachable.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with a mid to high carbonation level, this Hefeweizen is wonderfully soft and easy-drinking.  Although it is lightly sweet on the palate, the beer still finds balance and dries out nicely.  The 5.5% ABV is completely hidden, further enhancing the beer’s overall drinkability.  The aftertaste is all bubblegum and banana.

Final Thoughts: Are you curious how Paulaner Hefe-Weizen has become the “#1 wheat beer in Germany” (a.k.a. THE country that most of us immediately associate with beer)? Just take one sip and you will have all the answers you need.  Across the board, from appearance to aroma to taste to mouthfeel, there is no denying that this beer is everything a Hefeweizen should be. Whether you are just a casual beer drinker who is interested in traditional beer styles or a top tier enthusiast studying for your BJCP or Cicerone certification, Paulaner Hefe-Weizen is absolutely a beer that you will need to cross to paths with once you get to the realm of Hefeweizen.

Beyond just being one of the legit standards for the style, it also does not hurt that a tall pour of Paulaner Hefe-Weizen just so happens to be a perfect answer for a hot day.  Do yourself a favor, grab yourself some Paulaner Hefe-Weizen this summer, and fall in love with the Hefeweizen style all over again.  Prost!
