The Bruery & Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Collaborate on Hold the Spoon: Black Chocolate Cake Stout

HoldTheSpoon_16oz_2020_DetailThe Bruery (Orange County, California) has officially announced that it will begin the Limited Release of Hold the Spoon: Black Chocolate Cake, a special collaboration project with Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams (Columbus, Ohio), in early May 2020.

Inspired by Jeni’s popular ice cream flavor, Blackout Chocolate Cake, Hold the Spoon: Black Chocolate Cake is an Imperial Milk Stout “treated with mounds of cacao nibs, pure vanilla, and a dash of salt for balance.” Weighing in at 8.5% ABV, Hold the Spoon: Black Chocolate Cake is “mouth-filling and complex, with notes of rich cocoa, chocolate cake, bittersweet fudge, and semi-sweet chocolate chips.”

“[It is] always fun working with masters from other industries— especially when it’s ice cream. This time around Jeni’s sent us nine stunning flavors to evaluate. It is a very interesting experience seeing a group of people tasting and taking detailed notes on ice cream; you definitely notice nuances when you are writing down your flavor and aroma notes. Jeni’s Blackout Chocolate Cake was our choice because of its intense and layered chocolate character. To replicate that, we put together a complex malt bill, multiple sources and types of decadent cacao, milk sugar, vanilla, and a pinch of salt. The result is a fun beer-y take on the ice cream— complex but rounded bitter chocolate. It’s always a fun project when you try to reinterpret flavors found outside of beer.”

– Andrew Bell, Innovation Manager at The Bruery

16 oz. cans of Hold the Spoon: Black Chocolate Cake are available now at all of The Bruery’s locations and in The Bruery’s online store for shipping and delivery in California, Washington D.C., and select parts of Nevada.  This Limited Release offering will also see distribution and you can expect to find it at select craft beer-focused retailers located within The Bruery’s distribution footprint.  Prost!

Fun Fact – “Innovation and experimentation are two things The Bruery has always been known for. Over a year ago, the team at The Bruery challenged themselves to create a beer inspired by the popular ice cream purveyor. The first collaboration was in 2019, an imperial blonde ale inspired by the flavors of Jeni’s Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks ice cream. It was so well received it was only natural to create a second iteration.”
Ice Cream/Beer Social – “Join The Bruery team and Jeni Britton Bauer for a live ice cream and beer social at youtube.com/thebruery on Friday, 5.15.20, to watch them talk about life, innovation, and ice cream and beer.”
