Founders Brewing Co. Launches Brewed for MI Series with Release of Red’s Rye IPA

reds_rye_ipa_fullwrap_12ozcan_webFounders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids, Michigan) has officially announced that it will introduce Brewed for MI, a new series of Limited Release offerings available exclusively in Michigan, with the mid-March release of Red’s Rye IPA.

Brewed for MI is a Michigan-exclusive series that will consist of three different beer releases in 2020.  To go a step further than just being a chance to treat Michigan beer lovers to a special beer of their own, each Brewed for Mi release also “aims to raise awareness for Michigan-based non-profits through” the Big Pitcher, Founders Brewing Co.’s “corporate giving platform designed to give back to the causes that mean the most to the brewery. All causes Founders supports fall under three categories: Social Justice, Environment and Arts & Culture and range from local, MI-based organizations to those that operate on a national-level.” Red’s Rye IPA “intends to raise awareness for MI-based organizations that fall under the Arts & Culture category.”

A longtime favorite in the brewery’s “Grand Rapids taproom by employees and fans alike,” Red’s Rye IPA is an India Pale Ale “brewed with an abundance of Amarillo hops that impart intense grapefruit aromatics while the addition of rye malt lends a spicy, crisp finish.”  Boasting a “serious hop bitterness,” Red’s Rye IPA comes in at 70 IBUs and 6.6% ABV.

“We’re excited to release Red’s Rye IPA in package outside of our taproom for the first time in years,” said Co-Founder and President, Dave Engbers. “There’s a reason Red’s Rye IPA is consistently the #1 selling beer in the Grand Rapids taproom month after month – it’s a well-balanced, flavorful IPA that celebrates the delicious citrus characteristics of the Amarillo hop. We’re thrilled to put this product in a can for the first time in the name of supporting the artistic community throughout the state of Michigan.”

Red’s Rye IPA hit Founders Brewing Co.’s two taproom locations last week – Grand Rapids taproom on March 11 and Detroit taproom on March 12 – and distribution is scheduled to begin in mid-March 2020.  You can expect to find this Limited Release offering available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments located in Michigan only.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Civilized Brut IPA from Founders Brewing Co.

FoundersCivilizedPourFor this installment of Tasting Notes, sophistication abounds as we get into a few cans of Civilized Brut IPA from Founders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids, Michigan).

Introduced back in November to appeal to the “more sophisticated IPA drinker,” Civilized Brut is a Brut-style India Pale Ale that possesses “a clean and restrained bitterness” alongside a “malt sweetness [that allows] the hop notes to tantalize your senses in a bold yet never-overpowering way.” Coming in at a refreshing 6% ABV, Civilized Brut is “brilliantly bubbly, refreshingly crisp and stunningly clear, similar to a fine Brut Champagne.”

Civilized Brut is available now and will last through March 2020.  You can expect to find this new Seasonal Release available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans, 15-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Michigan and throughout the rest of Founders Brewing Co.’ s nationwide distribution network.

Now that the introductions are out of the way, let’s break out the fancy glasses and get further acquainted with Civilized Brut over some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Civilized Brut IPA from Founders Brewing Co.

Appearance: A steady pour from a 12 oz. can produces an IPA that is a light but brilliant gold in color and topped with just over two fingers of fluffy white foam.  When held to direct light, the color lightens to more of a straw yellow.  The beer is pristine in clarity and shows off the exuberant carbonation presence working within.  Head retention is quite good, falling slowly to a lasting finger that eventually leaves the empty glass coated with intricate patterns of lace.

Aroma:  The nose leads with nicely pronounced citrus notes of lemon, grapefruit, orange and tangerine.  The hops then slightly shift their influence to lend some earthy and herbal tones.  The malts are light in this area, but they do offer a touch of crackery sweetness in the background.

Taste:  The hops are quick to strike with some sharp, pithy citrus notes that read as lemon and grapefruit zest.  Sweet citrus and tropical tones then tame that initial burst with notes of orange juice, mango and passionfruit.  The hops fully express themselves by closing out their performance with a grace of peppery, grassy, floral and herbal notes.  The malts are subdued here as well but do supply some balance with an undercurrent of biscuity and crackery sweetness.

Mouthfeel:  On the lighter side of medium in body with a bright carbonation level, this IPA is incredibly crisp, clean and refreshing.  Although the hops do assert themselves (in flavor but not in bitterness), the overall experience proves to be balanced and finishes nice and dry.  The 6% ABV is light, but it does allow for a bit of warmth in the throat at times.  A touch of grapefruit zest and grassiness is left to linger in the aftertaste.

Final Thoughts:  When it comes to the Brut IPA style, Civilized Brut flawlessly executes in all areas.  While the bitterness levels are reduced, this IPA still gives you a wide range of hop flavor while remaining amazingly dry, crisp and easy drinking.  Each flavorful sip begs you to take another, making the overall experience feel light and incredibly refreshing.  Then, before you know it, sips turn into gulps, one glass turns into two (or more), and you are left wondering why you have not been drinking more Brut IPAs up until this point.

Seriously, if you have been looking for the right beer to help ease you into the world of Brut IPAs, we could not recommend Civilized Brut more.  Just keep in mind that this Seasonal brew is available in 15-packs . . . because you will end wishing you bought one when you are two cans deep into a sixer.   Just take our advice on this one, make it happen and go big while you are at it.  Prost!

Founders Brewing Co. Adds Unraveled Juicy IPA to Year-Round Portfolio

Unraveled_IPA_FullWrap_12oz_CanFounders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids, Michigan) has officially announced that it will introduce Unraveled IPA, the brewery’s first packaged Juicy IPA, as its newest Year-Round offering in mid-February 2020.

Originally released in 2019 as a part of Founder’s Brewing Co.’s Mothership Series – a lineup of experimental, taproom-only offerings – under the name Mucho Lupo, Unraveled IPA is a Juicy India Pale Ale “dry hopped with traditional hop pellets and lupulin powder, an innovative hop product that separates lupulin from the hop flower.”  With wheat and oats providing “a smooth backdrop to carry all those wonderful hop characteristics,” Unraveled IPA (6.6% ABV, 50 IBUs) is a unique Juicy IPA that pours “beautifully clear.”

“This is one of my favorite IPAs to come out of the brewery in a while,” said Brewmaster, Jeremy Kosmicki. “The hop character is aggressive with its citrus and tropical flavors and aromas while the addition of lupulin powder – rather than relying on over dry-hopping with just pellets – helps keep the grassiness in check. It has great balance and is clean, bright and refreshing.”

“It’s not often we add a beer to our year-round lineup, so when we do it’s definitely reason to celebrate,” said Co-Founder and President, Dave Engbers. “Jeremy wanted to create a juicy IPA that poured clear and he hit the nail on the head with Unraveled IPA. It’s hop aroma and flavor can stand up next to even the juiciest of juicy IPAs, but its clean, crisp finish is unmistakably Founders. Unraveled IPA fits in perfectly alongside Centennial and All Day as yet another fantastic IPA option you can find from Founders.”

Unraveled IPA will debut in Founders Brewing Co.’s Grand Rapids taproom on February 11 and in its Detroit taproom on February 18, and full distribution will follow in mid-February.  You can expect to find this new Year-Round offering available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Michigan and throughout the rest of the brewery’s nationwide distribution network.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: KBS Espresso from Founders Brewing Co.

KBSEspressoPourFor this installment of Tasting Notes, we push through the second half of the workweek thanks to a coffee-fueled boost supplied by KBS Espresso from Founders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids, Michigan).

Introduced in mid-November 2019 as the first-ever packaged variant of KBS (a.k.a. Kentucky Breakfast Stout), KBS Espresso (12% ABV) takes everything you love about Founders Brewing Co.’s iconic KBS – a Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Stout brewed with coffee and chocolate – and then ages it “on espresso beans after being removed from [Bourbon] barrels.” This added step results in “a fresh and snappy coffee twist on [a] classic barrel-aged beer.”

KBS Espresso is out now and will hang around through February 2020.  You can expect to find this Limited Release available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles, 750ml bottles and on draft at select craft beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Michigan and throughout the rest of Founders Brewing Co.’s nationwide distribution network.  **NOTE: KBS Espresso is not available on draft in Utah or in any format in Mississippi.**

Now that we have gotten all the background information on this exciting new variant out of the way, let’s get into these Tasting Notes and see how much coffee goodness KBS can carry!

Tasting Notes for KBS Espresso from Founders Brewing Co.

Appearance:  KBS Espresso presents itself just as you would expect any beer bearing the KBS name.  It is inky black in color and capped with a solid finger of frothy, mocha-colored foam.  When held to direct light, the blackness holds and blocks any light from penetrating.  The beer is completely opaque and gives no indication as to what the carbonation level could be.  Head retention is good, slinking down slowly to a creamy ring that notches the glass with fine arcs of lace after each pull.

Aroma:  The aroma absolutely explodes with big notes of espresso.  We are talking heavy notes of intensely roasted coffee joined by complementary notes of deeply roasted grain, dark chocolate and dark fruit.  The presence of espresso and roast is so powerful that it actually drowns out the majority of the bourbon notes, only allowing a touch of vanilla to come through.  The profile closes with a gentle waft of rich, earthy tobacco.

Taste:   The espresso is quick to consume the palate with an abundance of dark roasted coffee at the start of each sip.  Dark, bittersweet chocolate then joins the mix to create a satisfying note similar to those addictive little chocolate-covered espresso beans.  The barrel eventually works its way in to supply a soft undercurrent of vanilla and oak, but the bourbon tones are definitely here to take a back seat to the coffee notes.  The experience is rounded off with a smooth layer of dark fruit, leather and tobacco.

Mouthfeel:  Full-bodied with a moderate carbonation level, this Imperial Stout is thick and creamy on the palate.  The heavily roasted coffee and notes of dark chocolate provide a bit of bitterness, but that is quickly tamed by the vanilla tones provided by the bourbon barrels.  Shockingly, the 12% ABV provides very little booziness and offers only a touch of warmth in the throat at times. The aftertaste leaves behind a light presence of tobacco and freshly roasted coffee.

Final Thoughts: With the release of KBS Espresso, Founders Brewing Co. set out to ramp up and highlight the overall coffee character that has always been a part of the incredibly balanced KBS experience.  Mission accomplished.  The label on this variant clearly displays “ESPRESSO” in all caps, and that espresso lives up to its bold, intense reputation from start to finish in this beer. The brewing team was not at all shy about letting the espresso dominate the aromatics and flavor profile.  The roast is intense and imparts a pleasant bitterness that works beautifully with the beer’s roasted malts and chocolate notes.  The barrel character does fall off a bit (only offering a bit of oak and vanilla at times), but that is to be expected when you add a powerful ingredient like espresso to the beer after barrel-aging.  With that said, the grace of barrel that is present is more than enough because the intense coffee notes carry this beer with ease and in a wonderfully delightful way.

If you have ever wished there was more coffee in your KBS or are just curious to experience a different take on this legendary brew, you need to keep KBS Espresso in mind the next time you hit up your favorite bottle shop.  Just make sure you get your hands on some before its availability comes to an end in late February. Prost!

Founders Brewing Co. to Introduce Más Agave Grapefruit Alongside Re-release of Más Agave in 2020

mas_agave_grapefruit_12oz_bottleFounders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids, Michigan) has officially announced that it will release Más Agave Barrel-aged Imperial Lime Gose in tandem with its first variant, Más Agave Grapefruit, in May 2020.

New for 2020, Más Agave Grapefruit takes Más Agave to a new level after it is removed from the barrels by getting “a dose of fresh grapefruit juice to ramp up the tanginess and to pay homage to [Founders Brewing Co.’s] other favorite tequila-based cocktail, the Paloma.”  Also coming in at around 10% ABV, Más Agave Grapefruit is “sweet, salty, and mouth-puckeringly delicious.”

Founders Brewing Co. Announces Plans for Reopening Detroit Taproom

Founders_Logo_color_2018Founders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids | Detroit, Michigan) has officially announced that it will reopen its Detroit Taproom in early 2020 with plans of donating 100% of profits to local charities and community organizations.

The crew here at Mashing In typically tries to avoid re-posting press releases in their original form, but – due to the sensitive nature of the events surrounding the lawsuit involving Founders Brewing Co. and Tracy Evans that has been dismissed after the parties reached a settlement agreement – we figured it best to leave Founders Brewing Co.’s words intact so that their message concerning the reopening of the Detroit Taproom and their renewed commitment to Detroit can be read exactly as the brewery intended.

FOUNDERS BREWING CO. ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR REOPENING OF DETROIT TAPROOM

100% of Profits to be Donated to Local Charities and Community Organizations

DETROIT – (November 7, 2019) – Founders Brewing Co. announces it will reopen its Detroit taproom in early 2020, as part of a renewed commitment to the Detroit community and employees across the company.

Founders will donate 100% of profits from the reopened taproom to Detroit charities and community organizations, through at least 2022. The company is now in the process of reestablishing and building relationships with local nonprofits, understanding that input from Detroiters must be incorporated into philanthropic decision-making in order to achieve the best possible impact for the city and its residents. This effort will add onto the company’s existing charitable program, The Big Pitcher, which will expand in 2020 to provide more support to charities in West Michigan and across the state.

“We really wanted to be a part of the historic renaissance taking place in Detroit,” said Mike Stevens, Co-Founder and CEO of Founders. “We feel we opened Detroit for the right reasons, but we recognize there’s room to do things better. When we reopen our doors to beer lovers in Detroit, we promise an environment that will be positive for our customers, employees and the community as a whole.”

Founders opened the Detroit taproom, at 456 Charlotte Street, just north of the historic Masonic Temple, in 2017. The company estimates a $3.1 million economic impact in Detroit in just two years from employee wages alone, which it expects to significantly increase, between employment and donated profits, starting in 2020. The company expects its community commitment to include the addition of trained returning citizens (formerly incarcerated Detroiters) to its workforce, providing meaningful careers in hospitality.

The company is in the process of hiring a new general manager for the location. Staff members who had been working there at the time of the temporary closing on October 25, 2019 will continue to be paid through the end of 2019.

“We understand that financial impact is not enough. We’ve committed, companywide to accelerating our diversity and inclusion efforts. That will not wait until the reopening in Detroit,” added company Co-Founder and President Dave Engbers.

Founders has hired Detroit-based Thomas Group Consulting to create a new companywide strategy, with Thomas Group principal Buzz Thomas serving as Interim Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Founders. Thomas has provided counsel in this area to companies in a variety of industries and is also a respected former Michigan State Senator and Representative. Founders will strive to ultimately create a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Management system aligned with the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. Thomas Group Consulting will also assist Founders with identifying community partners in Detroit to ensure a diverse workforce and impactful philanthropy.

“I look forward to helping Founders create a best-in-class model for diversity, equity and inclusion, that will be able to serve as a model for other companies to emulate,” said Buzz Thomas.

Additionally, the company will hire a firm to conduct an independent audit of the Founders workplace to determine any workplace improvements that need to be made.

“This experience has been humbling for us, but it’s put us in position to consider the type of future we want for Founders, creating a new vision for important aspects of the company,” added Stevens.

“We’ve built Founders on our love of bringing people together over beer,” said Engbers. “Now we look forward to continuing that mission, but in the name of doing the right thing by giving back even more to our local communities.”
