Schlafly Beer Launches Low-Calorie Line of Boomerang Mead Spritzers

SchlaflylogoSchlafly Beer (St. Louis, Missouri) has officially announced that it will introduce Boomerang, a new line of mead spritzers in 12-ounce cans, on December 6 with the release of Boomerang Lemon Lime Mead Spritzer.

Developed to be an “all-natural alternative to the current growing hard seltzer market,” Boomerang is a twist on a Mead – a traditional style made from fermented honey and water – that “utilizes more water than the ancient recipe yet still allows for natural fermentation.”  This approach results in an “effervescent drink with a crisp finish that’s . . . gluten-free with only 4% ABV, three grams of carbs, and no artificial flavors in addition to being only 90 calories with zero added sugar.”  The Boomerang lineup will launch with Boomerang Lemon Lime and other flavors are expected to turn up later in 2020.

“As we watched this latest trend in consumer tastes quickly grow in the industry, we asked ourselves is this something we wanted to pursue, and if so, how can we craft a spritzer that feels authentic to our Schlafly brewing team. We believe that we’ve achieved that with the Boomerang mead spritzer.

We’ve experimented in various traditional meads in the past, but this is a whole new take on what a mead can be, taking one of the oldest fermented beverages in human history and using that as a lower ABV base for this very modern spritzer. We hear guests requesting gluten-free options and asking about the calorie count on beers, and we have to listen to that. Boomerang is our way to answer those consumers’ questions, and also offer them a product that they can feel good about – a local, all-natural crafted spritzer that tastes delicious.”

– Jared Williamson, Lead Brewer at Schlafly Beer

Oskar Blues Brewery Launches Lo-Cal One-y Hazy IPA as Newest Year-Round

oskarblueslogoOskar Blues Brewery (Longmont, Colorado) has officially announced that One-y 100 Calorie Hazy IPA will join the brewery’s Year-Round lineup in mid-September.

Crafted with the intention of “cultivating huge, hazy, hoppy flavor without the calorie count of a typical IPA,” One-y is a Hazy India Pale Ale “dry-hopped with El Dorado, Comet and Citra hops, and Mosaic and French Aramis appear in the whirlpool.”  Despite weighing in at just 4% ABV and 100 calories, One-y still possesses “big, fruit-forward, herbal vibes [that will] make craft beer lovers forget it’s low cal.”

The use of pale ale malt and wheat, along with the hefty dry hop load, creates a medium body. It’s easy to drink – pairs well with breakfast, lunch, or dinner.”

Abita Brewing Company Adds Low-Calorie Hop 99 IPA to Year-Round Lineup

hop99web1__largeAbita Brewing Company (Abita Springs, Louisiana) has officially announced that it will introduce Hop 99, a “guilt free” Light IPA, in late September 2019.

Developed by Abita’s brewing team with the intent of creating “a more sessionable beer without sacrificing the craft taste for long-time patrons and new craft beer drinkers,” Hop 99 is a Light India Pale Ale jam-packed with “Mosaic and Citra hops . . . to give it a big hop flavor, while pale malts give it a light body and crisp finish.”  Weighing in at just 4.2% ABV, 99 calories and 2.7 grams of carbohydrates, Hop 99 is an “ideal choice for after a run, taking a break from yard work or a long day of tailgating.”

“Hop 99 is the result of our brewing team and our patrons evolving together,” says David Blossman, President & CEO of Abita Brewing Co. “This beer gave us the challenge to create a flavor-forward, drinkable IPA, while it gives beer drinkers a craft-forward, sessionable option that significantly cuts the amount of carbohydrates and calories normally found in an IPA, or any category for that matter.”

“As the IPA category continues to change, we wanted to do something different that would appeal to a broader range of beer drinkers, so we took a look at how we can make an IPA an everyday hop-forward beer,” says Abita Brewmaster Mark Wilson.

Hop 99 is scheduled to enter full distribution in late September.  You can expect to find this new Year-Round offering available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and throughout the rest of Abita’s distribution area.  Prost!

R&D Brewing Enters the Low Calorie Beer Game with Launch of Lo-Cal Resolution Ale

12oz_LoCal Resolution Can_shrink_FNL[1]R&D Brewing (Raleigh, North Carolina) has officially announced that Lo-Cal Resolution Ale, a low-calorie beer option that comes in at under 100 calories, is available now as the brewery’s newest Core offering.

Meticulously developed to be a “guilt free” option that still possesses all the flavor of craft beer, Lo-Cal Resolution Ale is a “crisp, refreshing” American Pale Ale – brewed with Cashmere and Citra hops – “which starts off with a delicate fruity aroma that is followed by a sparkling effervescence that finishes clean.”  With each 12 oz. serving weighing in at an incredibly light 98 calories and 2.4 grams of carbs, Lo-Cal Resolution (4.2% ABV) promises to be the “perfect crushable option for active lifestyles.”

“Light lagers low in calories and carbs have been around for a long time but don’t suit the taste of the craft beer drinker,” said Ian VanGundy, brewmaster of R&D Brewing. “We chose to brew Lo-Cal Resolution with an ale yeast typically used for pale ales and IPAs, along with modern dry hopping techniques using the newly developed Cashmere hop. The resulting beer is as easy drinking as any light beer but has a fulfilling flavor profile with fruit forward aromas of melon and lemon that craft beer drinkers can appreciate.”

“This beer is a perfect example of what R&D Brewing is all about,” said Rachel Peterson, director of marketing at R&D Brewing. “We didn’t invent low calorie beer, but we took an innovative, methodical approach that will make people change their perceptions of what a light beer can be.”

Lo-Cal Resolution Ale is available now as a Year-Round offering.  You can expect to find this new low-calorie brew available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments located within R&D Brewing’s distribution footprint in Central and Eastern North Carolina.  Prost!

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Introduces 95 Calorie Slightly Mighty IPA

DFHslightlymightyDogfish Head Craft Brewery (Milton, Delaware) has officially announced that Slightly Mighty Lo-Cal IPA will launch on April 1.

“SLIGHT in cals and carbs with MIGHTY hop flavor”, Slightly Mighty is an American India Pale Ale that takes full advantage of the “culinary goodness” that is monk fruit – “an ancient Chinese delicacy that’s sweeter than sugar per ounce, so it amplifies the body and complexity in the beer, yet contains no calories.”  Coming in at just “4% ABV, 95 calories, 3.6g carbs, 1g protein and 0g fat per 12 oz. serving”, the super light, crisp and refreshing Slightly Mighty is still able to produce big “tropical notes of pineapple, coconut, mango and citrus, all while delivering an aromatic hop awesomeness that makes it so drinkable.”

“We developed the recipe for Slightly Mighty using similar methods of molecular-level research and culinary inspiration as we did to make SeaQuench Ale* – the most objectively thirst-quenching beer ever made by Dogfish,” said Sam Calagione, founder and CEO of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. “Whereas most IPAs start with a formidable malt bill to balance hoppy bitterness with malty sweetness, Slightly Mighty goes about it a different way – all through the magic of monk fruit. Most light beers are watery and lack body. In terms of body, with Slightly Mighty, the monk fruit essentially acts as the beer’s skeleton, on which mighty hop muscle and flavor can be built. It allows us to reduce the malt bill and avoid any unnecessary unfermentable sugars, and consequently deliver a beer that is lower in calories and carbs all while being balanced and offering the complexity of a world class IPA.”

Slightly Mighty will begin shipping to select markets (MA, DC, MD, DE, IL, IN, MN, SD, WI, VA, IA, KS, MO, NE, PA, WV, NJ, KY, OH, MI) on April 1, and “additional states will be added throughout the Summer with full distribution by this Fall.”  Once fully released, you can expect to find this new Lo-Cal beer option available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans, 12-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-focused retailers, bars and restaurants located in Alabama, Florida, Delaware and throughout the rest of Dogfish Head’s distribution footprint.  Prost!
