Tasting Notes: Sho’nuff from Against the Grain Brewery

AtGShoNuff1000This week we look to find out who’s the baddest mofo low down around this town by going toe to toe, glow to glow with Sho’nuff from Against the Grain Brewery (Louisville, Kentucky).

If you have not figured it out by now, Sho’nuff – and this entire post for that matter – has been inspired by the flawless, classic 80’s film known simply as The Last Dragon.  Not only did the brewers at Against the Grain craft Sho’nuff to be “a low down Golden Ale”, but they also wanted this offering to pull double duty as a Belgian Table Bier.  Basically the inspiration behind what we now call Session Beers, the low ABV Table Beer is an easy-drinking but full-flavored brew that “is meant to be consumed with food but also [stand] well on its own.”

At 4.9% ABV, Sho’nuff is “the beer for bad mo-fo’s” that can mercilessly handle anything you throw at it.  Need a beer that can stand up to just about any food coming at you?  Sho’nuff has got you covered.  Need a brew to crush after a long day in the heat?  No problem.  Looking to make a few mistakes and wish to shotgun the Shogun?  Just follow the “Puncture Here” instructions clearly marked on the can and do some work.  Sure, you may have to deal with some attitude and kiss some Converse from time to time, but Sho’nuff is here for you on draft and in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans.  Look for this brew to be available at craft beer-focused establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky and throughout the rest of Against the Grain’s distribution area.

Alright, no more games.  Let’s face the Shogun and get into these Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Sho’nuff from Against the Grain Brewery

Appearance:  Sho’nuff presents itself as a shimmering bronze-colored brew wearing a finger of bubbly, slightly off-white foam.  When held to the light, the beer gains vibrancy and glows with deep gold and orange hues.  The body is clear and displays a dutiful carbonation presence streaming within.  Head retention is decent, but the foam eventually recedes to a chunky ring that lays down gobs of lace from time to time.  Sho’nuff asks, “Am I the prettiest?”  And we emphatically answer, “Sho’nuff.”

Aroma: With all the bready notes kickin’ around in here, you’d think you just walked into Daddy Green’s Pizza.  This beer is just billowing with fresh-baked, crusty bread goodness.  It has a nice crackery quality to it, but tones of heartier grains push through at times. An underlying spicy rye character closes out the nose by adding a bit of complexity.

Taste:  Those bready aromas translate beautifully into the flavor.  Mostly biscuity, a lovely but restrained rye note surfaces to add just enough depth with added grain character and a touch of spice.  Only here for balance, the hops are light and lend further support to the rye’s spicy character.  The yeast plays a much bigger role here by reinforcing the bready notes and also adding some fruity notes of apple and pear.

Mouthfeel:  Sho’nuff is on the medium side of light in body with a moderate carbonation level.  This allows this brew to come across as much more substantial than it is.  At an easy-drinking 4.9% ABV, the beer hits the palate with a beautiful balance that tips ever so slightly toward the sweet side.  Aftertaste is minimal, but a little biscuity malt lingers.

Final Thoughts: A wise man once said that “those who are bound by desire see only that which can be held in their hands”, and that’s kind of a perfect way of looking at the Table Beer’s place in craft beer these days.  In a world where over-the-top ABVs, dank hoppiness, and extreme flavors reign supreme, the Table Beer has no desire to be more that what it is.  Subtly confident, this low-ABV style is here to supply beer lovers with an easy-drinking experience meant to be enjoyed with food or on its own.  Its seemingly-simplistic and complementary character is meant to bring out the beauty that exists in the meal/world surrounding it.  In doing so, it transcends trends and shows its own beauty by proving that complexity can exist in simplicity.  Having learned this lesson, Sho’Nuff does just that but with a Shogun of Harlem level of personality.  If you get this beer to the designated place at the designated time, it will gladly designate your ass with a proper Table Beer experience.  Playtime is over, kids.  Step up, open your mind, and learn for yourself who’s the master of the Table Beer.  Prost!

Cigar City Brewing Prepares for Red Banner Release of Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout

unnamed (8)On Tuesday, August 1 at 11 a.m., Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, Florida) will celebrate the annual release of Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout by hosting Red Banner Day 2017.

Each year, the good people at Cigar City Brewing honor Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II, with the release Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout.  With “notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of blackstrap molasses”, this “monolithic” Imperial Stout has impressed craft beer lovers the world over by being “fudge-like without being cloying, roasty without being acrid, and built to develop further complexity over time when properly cellared.”

Although this beer will see distribution throughout Cigar City Brewing’s full distribution area, the brewery will properly recognize the release of Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout with Red Banner Day 2017 on August 1.  Not only will this event act as your first opportunity to try this year’s vintage on draft, you will also be able to purchase an “unlimited quantity” of Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout in 22 oz. bottles.

Although Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout is more than capable of carrying an event on its own, Red Banner Day 2017 will feature much more than just one beer.  To start, this event will also act as the first release of Cognac Barrel-aged Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout.  Short in supply, this “barrel-aged masterpiece . . .  balances its espresso-like roastiness with a soft licorice-like sweetness and pronounced vanilla from extensive aging in French oak.”  Cognac Barrel-aged Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout will not see distribution, and will only be available for purchase on draft and in 750ml bottles in the Cigar City Brewing Tasting Room. The brewery expects this offering to sell out quickly and has set a limit of two (2) bottles per person.

In addition to Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout and Cognac Barrel-aged Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout, Cigar City Brewing also plans to tap “numerous specialty treatments” of Marshal Zhukov’s throughout Red Banner Day.  Throw in the fact that Cigar City will have a food truck on site all day, and now you have an event that truly has everything you could possibly need to properly enjoy a stout-laden day at the brewery.

Stout lovers, Red Banner Day 2017 is guaranteed to be an epic-level event and you will experience some serious regrets if you miss this one.  Don’t be that guy or gal left lamenting the day after.  Do what you must and join us at Red Banner Day so that we can raise a collective toast to the return of Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout.  We hope to see you all there.  Prost!

Innis & Gunn Unveils Two New Limited-Edition Series

InnisGunnlogoInnis & Gunn (Edinburgh, Scotland) recently announced that it will soon be introducing the first beers from two new series: Latitude and Longitude Raspberry Barrel-aged Saison and Vanishing Point 01.

Raspberry Barrel-aged Saison arrives as the inaugural release in the Latitude and Longitude Series, a new lineup of barrel-aged brews that “takes inspiration from the best loved beer styles from around the world, adding an Innis & Gunn twist.”  Just as the name suggests, Raspberry Barrel-aged Saison starts as a true representation of the Saison style that has been fermented with wild yeast. Once the brewing process is completed, the beer is then matured in bourbon barrels with “heaps of Scottish raspberries.”  This produces a “delicious, refreshing, and unique” Saison experience boasting “amazing raspberry and elderflower aroma, and depth and warmth from the barrel maturation, with a clean, flinty finish.”  Latitude and Longitude Raspberry Barrel-aged Saison (6% ABV) debuts this month.  This Limited-Edition release will be available in boxed 500ml bottles at select beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, and throughout the rest of Innis & Gunn’s distribution network in the U.S.

“As the pioneers of barrel-age brewing, Innis & Gunn continues in their quest to brew innovative, delicious beers that showcase the very best of Scottish brewing craft. We are delighted to work with our wholesaler and retail partners to bring these beers to the American beer drinker.”

– Georgia Homsany, Sr. Brand Director at US Beverage

The second series soon to launch from Innis & Gunn will be Vanishing Point.  When it comes to these limited release brews “the barrels and brewing ingredients are hand selected, top quality and chosen with one thing in mind – FLAVOR.”  Vanishing Point 01 is an 11% ABV Imperial Stout that has been aged in first fill bourbon barrels for six months, producing a beer that is “big, rich and bursting with flavors of fresh ground coffee, dark chocolate, coconut and vanilla.”  Vanishing Point 01 will turn up in the fall with limited availability in boxed 500ml bottles at fine beer establishments located within Innis & Gunn’s US distribution footprint.

Left Hand Brewing Co. Releases Milk Stout Nitro in Cans

Lefthand-MSN-Can-FrontLeft Hand Brewing Company (Longmont, Colorado) has officially announced the release of Milk Stout Nitro in what is the first ever US production run of a US made nitro widget can.

Fans of Left Hand Brewing Company have been asking for years and now the time has come: Milk Stout Nitro is now in cans.  Yes, it took some time, but the brewery wanted to make sure that they could provide the drinker with a perfect nitro experience before committing to a can and widget design. Patience has paid off because nitro fans can now enjoy “a perfectly smooth and creamy Milk Stout Nitro right from the can.”  While the use of a glass is still recommended, a proper straight-from-the-can experience is now a possibility thanks to some new technology developed by Ball Corporation.  Although Ball had supplied American craft breweries with widget cans in the past, the newly released “Milk Stout Nitro cans are the first being produced in the US” and feature a new widget.  Instead of the ball-shaped device found in other widget cans, the “US widget looks like a small top hat that is adhered to the bottom of the can which provides a consistent nitrogen release from the bottom up.”  This new device “ensures an even and consistent release of nitrogen throughout the beer when opened,” making it the perfect partner for “America’s Stout”.

“Beer fans have been asking for Milk Stout Nitro in a can for years. We have been exploring options for some time with the hopes of being able to someday deliver. We started canning some of our core and seasonal brands last year, but engineering our canning line to produce nitro with the highest quality and finding the right widget to produce the perfect draft-like or Hard Pour bottle experience took some time. So, we are very pleased to now offer beer drinkers, without a stout glass in reach, the ultimate nitro experience with the versatility of a widget can and our award-winning Milk Stout recipe. We hope it makes stout lovers rejoice.”

– Sarah Watson, Left Hand Brewing Co. Marketing Director

4-packs of Milk Stout Nitro cans will officially launch in Colorado in July, and then head out for nationwide distribution in the fall.  Look for Milk Stout Nitro in cans – also available in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft – at craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Colorado and throughout the rest of Left Hand’s 41-state distribution footprint.  Prost!

Boulevard Brewing Co. Introduces Two New Seasonals

Tough-Kitty-Diamond-BadgeBoulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, Missouri) has officially announced that it will soon release two new Seasonal offerings: Tough Kitty Milk Stout & Berliner Weisse.

First up, we venture into the realm of dark and creamy with the debut of Tough Kitty Milk Stout.  Brewed with Cara 120, Cara 300 and Patagonia Black Pearl, this deep black Milk Stout “features layers of caramel and chocolate malt complexity.”  The beer then receives a “subtle hopping” with Bravo and Cascade hops “to prevent the beer from being overly cloying.”  Finally, the brewers at Boulevard finish this beer off by adding “rolled oats in the mash tun and lactose, commonly referred to as milk sugar, in the wort kettle [to] lend a round, silky mouthfeel.”  This all results in a 5.5% ABV Milk Stout that “opens with aromas of bittersweet chocolate, espresso and toffee that transition to flavors of the same.”

Berliner-Weisse-Diamond-BadgeIf you happen to be looking for something a little lighter and on the sour side, Boulevard Brewing has you covered there as well with its second release of the season.  Boulevard’s Berliner Weisse is a German-style Sour Ale that features a “a malt bill composed of two-row base pale malt, malted wheat and CaraPils, . . . subtle bittering with Topaz hops and additions of orange, lemon and lime peel at the end of the boil to punctuate a soft lactic acidity with bright, citrus notes.”  After the beer undergoes primary fermentation with a strain of house ale yeast, the beer is then “inoculated with a lactobacillus culture that had previously been used to acidify Liefmans sour base beers and given several weeks for secondary fermentation to unfold.” Light in body and straw yellow in color, the resulting Berliner Weisse “opens with citrus aromas hinting to the soft sourness and lemon, lime and orange peel in a crisp, tart beer that’s incredibly flavorful and fruity while being super refreshing.”

Tough Kitty Milk Stout and Berliner Weisse will begin hitting shelves and taps over the next couple weeks and will hang around through October.  Once released, you will be able to find both of these Seasonal offerings available in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at fine beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Missouri, and throughout the rest of Boulevard Brewing Co.’s distribution network.  Prost!

Sierra Nevada and Germany’s Brauhaus Miltenberger Collaborate on Oktoberfest 2017

oktoberfest2017_12ozbottle_with_pint

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (Chico, California) announced today that is has partnered with Brauhaus Miltenberger (Miltenberg, Germany) to craft the 2017 release of Oktoberfest Festbier.

Back in 2015, Sierra Nevada launched a new Oktoberfest program that now has their brewers partnering with a different German brewery each year “to create an authentic fest beer fit for celebrating the world’s largest beer festival right here at home.”  For the 2017 Oktoberfest, the folks at Sierra Nevada invited Brauhaus Miltenberger, one of Germany’s most highly regarded craft brewers, to their Mills River facility in North Carolina to be a part of this special collaboration.

“Cornelius Faust and his team from Brauhaus Miltenberger embody the spirit and tradition of Oktoberfest,” says Brian Grossman, second-generation brewer for Sierra Nevada.  “It was a great to host them at our brewery in Mills River, NC, for the creation of this year’s fest beer.  They brought literally centuries of family brewing experience to the mix and helped us create the ultimate festival beer.”

This year’s version of Oktoberfest is a “deep golden lager” that stays true to Brauhaus Miltenberger’s “approach to the classic style.”  This yields a drinking experience that boasts “an authentic, rich, and layered malt flavor balanced by traditional German-grown hops.”

“We tried to re-create a classic Oktoberfest beer in the true German tradition,” says Cornelius Faust, fourth-generation brewmaster for Brauhaus Miltenberger. “We used traditional techniques to create layers of rich malt notes that remain light and crisp to the taste. That’s the secret of an authentic fest beer—complex malt flavor in a lager that remains easy to drink while you are celebrating the Oktoberfest season.”

2017 Oktoberfest is rolling out now and will be available throughout Oktoberfest season.  You can expect to find this special collaboration brew available in 12 oz. cans, 12 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer-focused bars, restaurants and retailers located in Alabama, Florida, California, North Carolina and throughout the rest of Sierra Nevada’s expansive distribution footprint.  Prost!

House Beer Adds Florida to its Distribution Area

beer-can_480x480House Beer (Venice, California) recently announced that it has partnered with Cavalier Distributing to bring its Premium Lager to Florida.

The whole brewing philosophy at House Beer is centered on one idea: “One beer, done right”.  Indeed, you read that correctly . . . their entire portfolio consists of only one beer: House Beer Premium Crafted Lager (4.8% ABV, 18 IBUs).  The founders of House Beer, avid fans of “all kinds of beer”, developed this concept after they were consistently left with the feeling of having to choose “between beers that were great for drinking and beers that tasted great.”  They realized that the beer community lacked a consistent, no-fuss, craft-inspired Premium Lager “brewed with the taste and ingredients you expect to find in most craft beers, but one you can drink time and time again without worrying about how filling it is or what it says about you.”  With a firm belief that this was a situation that could be remedied, they ran with this idea and House Beer was born.

Now that their Premium Crafted Lager has established itself in areas such as Southern California, Northern California, New York City, Pittsburgh, Colorado and Idaho, House Beer feels that now is the time to introduce themselves to the beer-loving masses in Florida.

“With the millennial population booming in places like Miami, we knew it was time to get House down to Florida,” said Brendan Sindell, Founder and President of House Beer. “We’ve found a great fit with Cavalier and their craft-focused portfolio, and I can’t wait to utilize their deep knowledge of the market to build a strong presence in Florida.”

House Beer Premium Crafted Lager will roll out in Florida with availability on draft and in 12 oz. and 16 oz. cans in bars and restaurants while retail stores will carry this offering in 6-packs and 12-packs of 12 oz. cans.

To formally launch their beer in state, the House Beer team will be in Florida to join the folks at Cavalier Distributing as they host the following Launch Events:

  • Wednesday, July 26 at 6 p.m. – House Beer Launch Event at The Mack House (9118 W State Road 84, Davie, FL)
  • Thursday, July 27 at 6 p.m. – BB’s Birthday and House Beer Launch Party at Revelry (17 S J Street, Lake Worth, FL)
  • Friday, July 28 at 6 p.m. – House Beer Launch Party at SoHo House (4385 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL)

If you are eager to try this new arrival but cannot make it out to the events above, there is no need to fret.  Just keep a watchful eye on those Florida beer shelves and taps, and give House Beer Premium Crafted Lager a try at your leisure.  Prost!

Against the Grain Brewery Now Brewing in Europe

AtGEuropePlus1_editedAgainst the Grain Brewery (Louisville, Kentucky) recently announced that it has officially expanded operations overseas with the establishment of Against the Grain Europe at Germany’s Brauhaus Binkert.

After five years of brewing in the United States and introducing the craft beer world to their unique sense of “unabashed, crude humor”, the folks at Against the Grain Brewery are no longer satisfied with just distributing their beers across the globe.  No, they want to get up close and personal with their European fans by forming Against the Grain Europe as a brand that is “made in and for European countries.”  With production taking place at Brauhaus Binkert, this new brand will be representative of the same “American styles and quality standards” used by Against the Grain’s Louisville operation.

To properly introduce this new brand to their friends in Europe, Against the Grain has also created a new character.  Touri is an international tour guide that will be taking “European versions” of the brewery’s beloved characters –  Session, Hop, Whim, Dark, Malt, and Smoke – “on a journey across America visiting landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Canyon.”

Against the Grain Europe will launch with two new offerings: Neoanderthal American IPA (6.5% ABV) and Plus One American Pale Ale (4.8% ABV).   These beers are currently being brewed and bottled in Germany, and will soon see distribution throughout Europe “where a host of [Against the Grain] core brands are already present.” Prost!
