SweetWater Brewing Introduces TripleTail IPA as New Summer Seasonal

TripleTail-Bottle-FullSizeSweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia) recently announced that TripleTail Tropical India Pale Ale has been officially released as the brewery’s latest Catch n’ Release Seasonal.

Since last year’s summer Seasonal – Goin’ Coastal IPA with Pineapple – graduated to year-round status earlier this year, the brewers at SweetWater decided to keep things moving in a tropical direction when they developed TripleTail Tropical IPA for the summer of 2017.  TripleTail sources its “lush, tropical flavors and aroma” from five hop varietals (Bravo, Mosaic, Denali, Waimea & Citra) that were hand-selected by SweetWater’s Brewmaster Mark Medlin “during harvest time; with Denali standing out as the one that would provide the big juicy, tropical, citrus flavors, while the bittering hop (Bravo) would give it the nice orange flavor.”  At an incredibly reasonable 5.5% ABV, TripleTail Tropical IPA is a hophead’s go-to remedy for any hot and humid day.

TripleTail Tropical IPA launches in mid-June and will be hanging around through October.  You can expect to find this Seasonal brew available in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles, 12 oz. cans (coming in July) in Variety 12-packs and on draft at beer-focused establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and throughout the rest of SweetWater Brewing’s ever-growing distribution area.  Prost!

21st Amendment Brewery Brings the Watermelon Funk

21aWatermelonFunk_edited21st Amendment Brewery (San Leandro, California) recently announced the release of Watermelon Funk as the brewery’s first Insurrection Series beer of the year.

Originally created in 2004 by Russian River Brewing’s Vinnie Cilurzo as a “funked up” version of 21st Amendment’s Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer when the folks at San Francisco’s iconic Toronado Pub were wary of tapping a watermelon beer, Watermelon Funk has been officially resurrected but without Cilurzo’s two year aging schedule.  For the 2017 version of Watermelon Funk21 Amendment’s Brewmaster and co-founder Shaun O’Sullivan decided to “kettle sour” the beer this time around “and then ferment it with a saison yeast strain imparting a tart, slightly acidic mouthfeel with syncopated sweet notes and downbeat aromas.”  Clocking in at a refreshing 6.7% ABV and “a Funk Factor of 11, Watermelon Funk is sure to get the party started and keep the music playing with each sip.”

“The process of kettle souring is where we add lactobacillus bacteria to the kettle, allowing it to grow and consume sugar, producing lactic and acetic acids that are responsible for souring the beer. We then halt that process by boiling the wort in the kettle and then ferment it with a special farmhouse yeast strain”, O’Sullivan explains.

Watermelon Funk releases in June with availability in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft.  You can expect to find this “super limited edition” Insurrection Series beer at select craft beer bars, restaurants and retailers located in Florida, California and throughout the rest of 21st Amendment’s distribution footprint.  Prost!

Fun Fact – About the Insurrection Series: “Watermelon Funk marks the first Insurrection Series beer of the year for 21st Amendment Brewery. In 2017, they opted to unleash their brewers’ creativity and roll out brand new, never-before-seen-or-brewed beers for this series. ‘Insurrection is the act of rising in revolt, rebellion or resistance,’ says Freccia. ‘Kind of our rallying cry when we released our first Insurrection Series beer in 2009. Back then drinking craft beer in cans was a strange and out-of-the-box idea and this was our way to rise up against the cheap, flavorless canned beer that had come before. Today, our Insurrection Series allows us to push the limits of our brewery, to introduce new beers that celebrate our creative spirit and offer a taste of something new, rare and exciting.'”

New Belgium Brewing Goes 100% Wood-aged with Transatlantique Kriek and Doses Voodoo Ranger with Passionfruit

TransatlantiqueKriek2017_22ozBottle_MNew Belgium Brewing (Ft. Collins, Colorado) recently announced that it is hitting the month of June with two Limited Release offerings: 2017 Transatlantique Kriek and Voodoo Ranger Passionfruit Imperial IPA.

The brewers at New Belgium are incredibly proud of 2017 Transatlantique Kriek because this year’s release has the distinction of being 100% wood-aged for the first time in the beer’s history.  This Sour Ale is a blend of “50 percent New Belgium Foeder-aged Golden Sour and 50 percent Authentic Kriek Lambic from Brewery Oud Beersel.”  This beer begins in Belgium where Oud Beersel creates a spontaneously fermented Lambic that is soured in oak barrels.  That Lambic then becomes a Kriek after months of maturing on Polish cherries.  Once completed, the Authentic Kriek Lambic is sent to New Belgium to blend with their “oak-aged sour golden” to create Transatlantique Kriek.  The 6.5% ABV Kriek has a flavor profile that “is spritzy, mouthwatering and fruity, along with tartness from the cherries.”  2017 Transatlantique Kriek is available now in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at craft beer friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Colorado, North Carolina and throughout the rest of New Belgium’s expansive distribution network.

“This year’s beer is particularly iconic because it’s 100% wood aged,” said Andrew Emerton, New Belgium Specialty Brand Manager. “Because of our process with this beer, we actually had the incredible honor of having Transatlantique Kriek at this year’s Toer de Geuze in Belgium, the premier sour beer event in the world.”

“We showcased our beer alongside 12 other authentic lambic producers,” added Lauren Limbach, New Belgium’s Wood Cellar Director & Blender. “It was an incredible honor and a total dream come true!”

VRSR_Passionfruit_Imperial_IPA_22ozAs an added bonus, New Belgium Brewing is also releasing the newest addition to its Voodoo Ranger lineup this month: Voodoo Ranger Passionfruit Imperial IPA.  This specialty release is a “crisp and refreshing” American Double India Pale Ale that has “tropical aromas and passionfruit flavors . . . backed by a strong presence of Citra and Galaxy hops.”  Although it may weigh in at a sizable 8% ABV, Voodoo Ranger Passionfruit Imperial IPA still promises to be a perfect pairing for summer.  This Specialty Release is available for a limited time in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at select craft beer destinations located within New Belgium’s distribution area.

Tasting Notes: Grateful Pale Ale from Starr Hill Brewery

GratefullabelAlways grateful for another amazing week, we show our thanks by having a look at the newly “Remastered” version of Grateful Pale Ale from Starr Hill Brewery (Charlottesville, Virginia).

Not too long ago, we hit you with the news that Starr Hill Brewery had “Remastered” a classic by updating the recipe for their Grateful Pale Ale.  The brewers decided to take Grateful back in the direction of an American Pale Ale instead of a Session IPA.  The beer was tweaked so that it would carry a fuller mouthfeel to support “a revamped hop bill [featuring] Cascade, Mosaic, Centennial and Falconer’s Flight.”  Thanks to hop-bursting techniques, Grateful Pale Ale now has enhanced aroma and flavor profiles that have been carefully balanced by the beer’s sturdier malt backbone.  Grateful Pale Ale – Remastered is available now in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles, 12 oz. cans, and on draft at craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Virginia and throughout the rest of Starr Hill’s distribution area.

Now that the particulars are out of the way, let’s really see what these changes are all about by getting into some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Grateful Pale Ale – Remastered from Starr Hill Brewery

Appearance: Grateful Pale Ale pours up a soft golden in color with a little over a finger of white foam resting on top.  Held to the light, bright yellows gain vibrancy, push forward and dominate the color.  Despite a slight chill haze, the body is clear and shows off a vivacious carbonation presence.  The head recedes quickly to a fluffy ring that successfully lays down a complete sheet of lace on one side of the glass.

Aroma:  Lemon and orange zest make themselves known first with a very fresh floral tone following closely behind.  This opens a bit further to expose a bit of grassiness and grapefruit.  This fresh and citrusy aromatic profile just screams of refreshment and clean hop goodness.

Taste: Right off the sip, citrus gets all up on the palate with big notes of grapefruit, orange and tangerine (zest and juice).  That floral and grassy earthiness turns up here as well to break things up a bit.  All of this hop character eventually gives way to a softly sweet malt layer.  The malts are nondescript in flavor, adding just enough sweetness for balance.

Mouthfeel:  This Pale Ale is medium in body with a medium carbonation level.  The beer has good weight to it, allowing it to linger just a bit on the palate.  Although this brew is hop forward in flavor and aroma, the bitterness has been nearly canceled out with a beautiful balancing sweetness.  The ABV has minimal effect, and the beer proves to be wonderfully refreshing and easy-drinking.  A little orange zest is left behind to linger in the aftertaste.

Final Thoughts: With its newly reformulated recipe, Grateful Pale Ale – Remastered certainly harkens back to the days of the classic American Pale Ale in body and feel while still staying current with its pronounced but balanced hop character.  Don’t let us mislead you because this beer absolutely highlights all the citrusy and refreshing qualities possessed by the utilized hops.  Hop fiends will surely find plenty to like in Grateful Pale Ale, but there is more at work here that must be lauded. This beer’s dedication to the Pale Ale may appear subtle on the surface, but it easily gets your attention if you happen to go looking for it. Its mouthfeel has a luxurious weight and texture to it that you just cannot find in today’s Session IPAs.  Then you have Grateful’s laser-focused balance that gives you hop flavor with very little residual bitterness.  This approach to the American Pale Ale provides us with a beer that can either be crushed without a thought after mowing the lawn or slow-sipped and contemplated over while relaxing after dinner.  Grateful Pale Ale – Remastered has depth, and it is clear that a lot of thought went into its development.  Incredibly well done and we will definitely be back for more.  Prost!

Ferneticbottle_editedForbidden Root Brewery (Chicago, Illinois) recently announced that it will introduce the Florida craft beer community to Fernetic Imperial Black Ale, a limited release collaboration with Fratelli Branca Distillerie (Milan, Italy), beginning in late-June.

To properly represent Fernet-Branca in “its first foray into craft beer”, the brewers at Forbidden Root teamed up with the Branca family to “[deconstruct] the beloved Italian digestif and [reconstruct] the legendary family recipe into an unforgettable craft beer for Amaro and beer lovers alike.”  Their collaborative efforts resulted in Fernetic, “an exotic, spicy and complex” Imperial Black Ale made with a recipe boasting “quality ingredients such as rhubarb root, saffron, and wormwood, among the selected botanics of the 27 herbs and spices found in Fernet-Branca.” With an aromatic profile hinting at notes of coffee and peppermint, the 8.4% ABV Fernetic supplies a drinking experience possessing “a soft roastiness . . ., bitter notes [that] build to a spicy, creamy middle and dry woody finish.”

“Collaborations are always an opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and build off someone else’s creative energy,” says Forbidden Root head brewer BJ Pichman. “With Fernet-Branca, we were working with a nearly 175 year-old recipe, a body of very distinct flavors and a bitterness factor that is not usually present in beers. Our team really enjoyed the creative challenge of working to make a delicious, uncommon beer while keeping true to the flavors and history of the Fernet-Branca recipe.”
