Sixpoint Brewery Announces Release of Hi-Res Triple IPA

hireseditedSixpoint Brewery (Brooklyn, New York) magnifies your hop experience once again with the 2017 release of Hi-Res IIIPA.

Each year, the brewers at Sixpoint approach the creation of Hi-Res IIIPA – or Triple IPA – with the intention of creating a “juicy hop character magnified to the limits of your perception.”  It is only after a madness-inducing amount of time spent studying, contemplating and experimenting with every aspect of the hop itself that they are able to harness the true and full power of lupulin.  This unwavering dedication to the science of brewing pays off by producing “waves of the most intense, tropical, citrusy aromas and flavors your mind can imagine.”  If you happen to be intimidated by this brew’s 10.5% ABV and 115 IBUs, worry not because the complex flavors in Hi-Res IIIPA have been meticulously balanced to result in “a surprisingly easy beer to sip.”

…Once our eyes were opened to the potential

of the hop cone, we couldn’t be stopped.

With a laser focus, we magnified the hop factor,

and pushed the boundaries of flavor, aroma,

and perception itself to create HI-RES.

It’s Mad Science.
Hi-Res IIIPA is available now in 4-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft.  This limited release can be found at fine craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of Sixpoint Brewery’s distribution area.  Hi-Res IIIPA is truly a beer that has been created by hophead for hopheads.  If you classify yourself as such, be sure to grab a 4-pack during your next beer run.  Prost!

JDub’s Brewing Company to Open Off-Site Taproom in Bradenton, Florida

jdubslogoJDub’s Brewing Company (Sarasota, Florida) has announced that they will open an off-site taproom location, The Dub Shack at UTC, in Bradenton, Florida.  This location is tentatively scheduled to open at the end of January.

**UPDATE** The Dub Shack at UTC officially opened to the public on January 27.  As of January 30, The Dub Shack at UTC is open seven days a week at noon.  **UPDATE**

In what was formerly a World of Beer franchise location, JDub’s Brewing Company has found the perfect home for their new off-site taproom at 8217 Tourist Center Drive, Bradenton, Florida. The concept behind The Dub Shack at UTC is to provide the brewery’s fans with “an experience that mimics the feel of the brewery itself” but in an area that is a bit more accessible than the brewery’s taproom location in Sarasota.  The off-site taproom will feature “a live video feed of brewing operations at JDub’s Brewing Company,” art from local artists, and 40 draft lines – “20 of which devoted to JDub’s beers and the other 20 a variety of high quality craft beers made by other brewers.”

“This is something I’ve wanted to do for years. My brewery is slightly off the beaten path and this new location will allow us to show off our brand in a more populated location.”

– Jeremy Joerger, JDub’s founder

Tentatively scheduled for January 26, The Dub Shack at UTC will host a soft opening for JDub’s Mug Club Members and media only.  The facility will then open to the public shortly thereafter.  Once exact dates are set in stone, we will update you all with that information here.  Prost!

Hop Shovel IPA Now Available Year-Round from Bear Republic Brewing

hsthumbBear Republic Brewing Co. (Sonoma County, California) has officially announced the addition of Hop Shovel IPA to the brewery’s portfolio of Year-Round offerings.

Even though this beer has previously only been available on draft, Hop Shovel IPA has quickly become one of Bear Republic’s most desired offerings. This well-rounded India Pale Ale achieved fan-favorite status thanks to a recipe that incorporates “a high proportion of wheat and rye” malts and three incredibly juicy hop varieties – Mosaic, Meridian and Denali.  This combination yields a 7.5% ABV IPA that is absolutely loaded with “huge tropical and citrus notes.”  After receiving high praise from fans and earning a couple awards along the way, it was a very easy decision for Bear Republic to have Hop Shovel IPA join Racer 5 IPA, Grand-Am American Pale Ale, Pace Car Racer Session IPA, and Double Aught Pilsner in their year-round lineup.

“Hop Shovel is one of our favorite beers to brew. We are very happy to add this to our year-round lineup and hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do.”

-Peter Kruger, Master Brewer at Bear Republic Brewing Co.

Hop Shovel IPA is officially available now in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft.  You can expect to find this new Year-Round brew on shelves and taps at craft beer-friendly bars, restaurants and retailers in Florida and throughout the rest of Bear Republic’s distribution footprint.  If you happen to be a hophead, this West Coast IPA certainly needs to be on your radar.  Prost!

lie_to_me_shieldAt 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, Big Storm Brewing Co. (Clearwater, Florida) will begin the limited release of Lie to Me Imperial Chocolate Cherry Stout in 750ml bottles.

To properly recognize and celebrate Valentine’s Day, the folks at Big Storm Brewing Co. have created Lie to Me as a craft-brewed love letter that is overflowing with sensual decadence.  This Imperial Stout’s “bittersweet chocolate and subtle fruit” aromatics engage in an intoxicating dance with flavors of “cherry tang . . . Tasting Notes: Dank Tank Pulled Porter from SweetWater Brewing Company

swppcansTasting Notes satisfies many cravings this week by spending a little time with Dank Tank Pulled Porter – Bacon Smoke Flavored Porter from SweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia).

Back in mid-December, we let you all know of Pulled Porter’s triumphant return to SweetWater Brewing Company’s Dank Tank lineup, the brewery’s series of “rarely released randomness” (click here to read that full post). When you take into account that this chocolaty Porter was brewed with malts that were carefully smoked alongside racks of bacon from Fox Bro’s BBQ, it is absolutely no surprise that Pulled Porter is back for an encore release.  When all is said and done, this 7.7% ABV Smoked Porter is “a savory, smoky brew that’s a big winter warmer.”  This offering is currently available for a limited time in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans and on draft at fine craft beer retailers found in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and throughout the rest of SweetWater’s distribution area.

Alright, it has been officially declared bacon and beer time. Let’s pour this pint and get to some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Dank Tank Pulled Porter from SweetWater Brewing Company

Appearance:  Pulled Porter hits the glass seemingly pitch black in appearance with just a sliver of cola brown peeking through at the bottom of the glass.  When held to direct light, the beer proves to walk a tight rope between hues of the darkest possible browns and inky blacks.  The body is opaque, but a soft, consistent carbonation presence can be witnessed coursing from the bottom of the glass.  The pour built two fingers of solid, fluffy foam that is dark tan in color.  Head retention is good, falling eventually to a lasting, chunky finger.  The lacing has substantial stick to it, leaving wide arcing patterns across the glass.

Aroma:  The first smell to present itself is strikingly similar to the one you would get upon opening an unlit but well-seasoned smoker.  There is a rush of beautiful smoke, ashen wood embers and a nondescript quality of savory meats.  These notes then mingle with a bit of bittersweet chocolate that is light in presence but well at home here.  The smoke has firmly asserted itself as the aroma’s star.

Taste:  Just as in the nose, the flavors begin with tones that are rich in smoke.  Qualities of earthy wood, campfire, smoked pork, caramelized brown sugar, and just a touch of spice initially dominate.  Forward but rightly so.  Intense but composed.  These notes then begin to relax to allow flavors of toasted grain and bread the opportunity to back them up a bit with added hearty and sweet tones.  A tinge of hop character squeaks through with some citrus before the more pronounced smoke flavors eventually fade to expose decadent notes of dark and milk chocolate.  Just as you think the beer is finished, another wave of smoke arrives to wash over the palate once more.

Mouthfeel:  Perfectly medium in body, this Porter has a solid weight to it that is lifted just a touch by a medium carbonation level.  Abundantly savory and smoky on the palate, this beer also displays a delightful grace of sweetness.  ABV is light, leaving just a bit of heat to build at times in the belly.  The aftertaste is lingering rich smokiness.

Final Thoughts:  If I was forced to sum up Dank Tank Pulled Porter with just one word, I would quickly and confidently respond with “satisfying.” By that, I mean it is satisfying in an all-encompassing, comforting way.  The smokiness is just intense enough to firmly declare itself a Smoked Beer, but it does so in a relaxed manner that is reminiscent of smoke-laced memories of good times spent around a campfire.  You know the smoke is there, but you still have the chance to enjoy everything else going on around you . . . or in this case, within this beer.  The smoke pulls back just enough to allow the added hops and malts a chance to do their thing by lending countering layers of sweetness and bitterness. Instead of having this beer hide behind an overly aggressive smoke character, the brewers at SweetWater clearly employed a profound level of restraint to infuse the brew with a spot-on amount of savoriness. The beer certainly knows its role and has established intentions of enticing you to return for sip after sip.  This beautifully executed approach proves to be the key in producing a Smoked Beer that is truly easy drinking, approachable and a wonderful choice to pair with food.  I highly recommend that you shake up your usual routine during your next beer run and pick up some Dank Tank Pulled Porter to enjoy what is absolutely an outstanding craft beer experience.  Prost!

Terrapin Beer Co. Gives New Life to The Walking Dead Blood Orange IPA, Introduces Lucille

Walking Dead Blood Orange_Transparent.pngTerrapin Beer Co. (Athens, Georgia) and Skybound have joined forces once again to release not one but two official beers of the undead in 2017, The Walking Dead Blood Orange IPA and Lucille Blackstrap Molasses Stout.

When you consider that the majority of The Walking Dead comic book is based in Georgia, much of the TV show is filmed there, and several beers from Terrapin Beer Co. have turned up in multiple episodes since Season 2, it was just a matter of time before the brewery and Skybound partnered to create a Walking Dead-themed craft beer.

Originally released in 22 oz. bottles in 2015 as their first collaboration, The Walking Dead Blood Orange IPA returns this year with an updated recipe and new packaging in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans.  The exact details for the “recipe adjustment” are not known, but the brewers promise that they will be “packing more Blood Orange into the beer” this time around.  The Walking Dead Blood Orange IPA will officially release in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans in mid-February.

Terrapin Beer Co. and Skybound have also announced that they will be expanding their lineup of Walking Dead beers in 2017 with the introduction of Lucille, a “big and menacing” Imperial Stout inspired by Negan’s weapon of choice.  Brewed with blackstrap molasses and vanilla, Lucille was then properly finished with time spent aging on hickory, maple and white ash – the three woods used to produce baseball bats.  A “super limited” number of 500ml bottles of Lucille Blackstrap Molasses Stout will be released in late February.

Fans of the show/comic book and craft beer can expect to find these offering available for a limited time at craft beer retailers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and throughout the rest of Terrapin’s ever-expanding distribution area.  A word of warning – Like the Walking Dead series, these beers are sure to be incredibly popular.  If you wish to enjoy these beers when the series returns on Sunday, February 12, be sure to secure your bottles as soon as you see them.  Prost!

Due to the serious nature of this situation, we will provide the details of this recall verbatim from Sierra Nevada’s press release:

  • This recall comes after quality inspections at the company’s Mills River, North Carolina, brewery detected a very limited number of bottles with a flaw that may cause a small piece of glass to break off and possibly fall into the bottle, creating a risk for injury.

Coast states: Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

The company is actively working with distributor and retail partners to remove this beer from retail shelves and hold any further shipments. Consumers who have purchased beer within the scope of this recall will be eligible for full compensation of the purchase price and are advised not to drink it and to dispose of the beer. A website has been set up for updates on the recall and to report purchase at sierranevada.com/qualitymatters.

“While we believe this concern impacts roughly 1 in every 10,000 (0.01%) of our bottles packaged during this time,” says Mike Bennett, Chief Supply Chain Officer, “Sierra Nevada has set the standard for quality in the craft brewing industry since 1980 and we have decided to take this precaution to ensure the safety of our consumers. To date, we have not received any consumer reports of injuries resulting from the potentially affected bottles and we are working with our supplier to determine the root cause of the issue.”

That covers all the information currently available on this recall.  If any further information surfaces, we will be sure to update this post with those details.  For now, just be sure to check those codes and dates on any Sierra Nevada bottles currently in your fridge.  Prost!

Funky Buddha Brewery Introduces Pineapple Beach as Newest Year-Round Release

fbpineapplebeachsixer_editedFunky Buddha Brewery (Oakland Park, Florida) recently announced that Pineapple Beach Blonde Ale will be officially joining their Year-Round lineup in February.

As a means of adding depth and balance to their line of Year-Round brews, Funky Buddha has created Pineapple Beach Blonde Ale to be a full-flavored, light-bodied beer “built for a Sunshine state, craft beer-lovin local.”  This goal was achieved thanks to a recipe consisting of Citra hops, Pilsner and Wheat malts, and “just enough real pineapple . . . to capture the tropical vibe without making the beer overly sweet or fruity.”  At just 5% ABV, this crisp and refreshing Blonde Ale proves to be the perfect go-to beer all year long.  Pineapple Beach joins Floridian Hefeweizen, Hop Gun IPA, and Hop Stimulator Double IPA to comprise the full roster of Funky Buddha’s flagship offerings.  The release of Pineapple Beach marks the first new year-round offering from Funky Buddha Brewery since early 2016.

“Pineapple Beach fills a demand that we’re seeing for sessionable beers that appeal to a broad range of craft consumers,” says KC Sentz, co-owner and general manager of Funky Buddha Brewery. “It’s easy-drinking but flavorful, which is exactly what our customers have been asking for.”

As of January 16, limited amounts of Pineapple Beach Blonde Ale are currently available now on draft only.  Following shortly behind, 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles – suggested retail price of $9.99 each – will become available at craft beer retailers throughout Florida beginning on Wednesday, February 1.  If curiosity has gotten the best of you, there is also a chance for “a sneak peek preview of Pineapple Beach at MBCP Draft Day, a draft tour of Maple Bacon Coffee Porter at 200 statewide accounts starting January 26th.”  Whenever you happen to track down your first sip of Pineapple Beach, just be sure to enjoy it as intended: paired with an amazing day in Florida.  Prost!
