Maine Beer Company Expands Distribution to Florida

MaineBeerCoLogoMaine Beer Company (Freeport, Maine) has officially announced that it has partnered with Cavalier Distributing and will immediately begin distribution in the state of Florida.

Founded in Portland, Maine in 2009 by David and Daniel Kleban, Maine Beer Company started its journey with “a one-barrel brewhouse and the mission of brewing one beer and brewing it well.” Building off the success of that beer (now known as Peeper Pale Ale, a Core offering), the crew at Maine Beer Company pushed forward with what they call the “Do what’s right” philosophy, a commitment that is centered around “donating 1% of their gross annual sales to environmental nonprofits.” Armed with this thoughtful approach and a growing portfolio of tasty brews, Maine Beer Company quickly gained popularity, expanded to a 15bbl brewhouse, “[outgrew] its original space and moved to a new facility in Freeport in 2013. Now in 2018, they have reached the next phase of their growth, transitioning to a 60bbl brewhouse in an expanded production facility, with a new tasting room slated for 2019.”  This growth has also allowed the brewery to extend its distribution reach further south so that it can now share its offerings with the avid beer lovers in Florida.

Maine Beer Company will launch distribution in Florida with the following five Core offerings (the descriptions below were provided by the brewery):

  • Peeper| Pale Ale | 5.5% ABV – Maine Beer Company’s flagship beer, notes of light citrus, raspberries, blackberries, subtle pine, light bready
  • Lunch| India Pale Ale | 7.0% ABV – Maine Beer Company’s East Coast take on a classic West Coast IPA. Lunch is named after a whale that has been spotted off the coast of Maine by Allied Whale (nonprofit partner) since 1982. She has what looks like a bite taken out of her fin, hence the name Lunch. Notes of tropical fruit, citrus fruit, pine, subtle malt sweetness.
  • MO| Pale Ale | 6.0% ABV – Named after Daniel’s twins, MO, a staff favorite, has notes of zesty citrus, passion fruit, pine, and a subtle malt sweetness.
  • a tiny beautiful something| Pale Ale | 5.5% ABV – Maine Beer Company’s only single hopped beer showcases El Dorado hops. Notes of candied orange, citrus zest, subtle anise.
  • Another One | India Pale Ale | 7.0% ABV – While getting through the first expansion in 2013, sometimes we just needed Another One to keep the creative juices flowing. This IPA has notes of grapefruit, tangerine, and a resinous, clean malt palate.

The beers listed above are hitting the Florida market now in 16.9 oz. (500ml) bottles and on draft. You can expect to find these Maine Beer Company offerings at select craft beer establishments located in all areas of Florida normally serviced by Cavalier Distributing.  Prost!

Wild Leap Brew Co. Set to Release American Cherry Pie Ale

WL_IndividPage_AmericanCherryWild Leap Brew Co. (LaGrange, Georgia) has officially announced that it will soon begin the “extremely limited release” of American Cherry, a cherry pie-inspired ale.

Meant to mimic the comforting flavors found in a slice of homemade cherry pie, American Cherry is brewed with “fermented sweet and tart cherries and cinnamon” to result in a Fruit Beer that “is slightly tart, has a well-balanced malt profile and a mild bitterness.” Coming in at 6.5% ABV, American Cherry promises to be “the perfect choice for the cool fall nights” ahead.

“We wanted a fuller-bodied fruited ale suited for the weather change,” said Head Brewer, Chris Elliott. “Since we recently debuted a stout and an IPA, this was a great way to enhance our current lineup.”

“Homemade cherry pie is an American classic, so we decided to give it some prominence in the craft beer world,” shared Elliott. “The complex malt bill mimics pie crust flavors and the combination of Tart Cherries and Sweet Dark Cherries tastes great with cinnamon. These flavors really work together.”

Zymurgy Magazine Turns 40, Updates its Look

AHAlogoZymurgy (Boulder, Colorado), the preeminent magazine for homebrewers, is celebrating its 40th anniversary by unveiling a new look and feel with the release of the November/December 2018 issue.

Established in “1978 by Charlie Papazian—the ‘Godfather of Homebrewing’—as he launched the American Homebrewers Association® (AHA)”, Zymurgy is a bi-monthly journal that “serves the homebrewing community the latest information and advice to support their passion for brewing and drinking quality beer.”  For 40 years, the writers at Zymurgy have provided “innovative and award-winning recipes, articles on do-it-yourself projects, explanations of brewing science, and presentations of brewing techniques in addition to a healthy dose of beer culture.” With the release of the November/December 2018 issue, this shared knowledge will now be expanded to include the following features (the descriptions below were sourced from an AHA press release):

  • A regular guest column called “Ferment on This” and a regular department called “Ask the AHA,” which replace World of Worts and Dear Professor, respectively.
  • A new spread for beginners, named for Papazian’s signature mantra “Relax, Don’t Worry, Have a Homebrew!”, which includes basic brewing advice, commonly used acronyms, a carbonation chart, and more.
  • An expanded department called Beer School, formerly Style Spotlight, that includes such topics as off flavors, exam preparation, and sensory development.

For those of you who are already avid readers of the magazine, you can expect Zymurgy to continue to publish the annual “Best Beers in America” survey.

“We’ve come a long way from a 12-page stapled pamphlet to the sleek remastered magazine that we are today,” said Dave Carpenter, Zymurgy editor-in-chief. “It’s been 40 years since the AHA printed the very first issue of Zymurgy, sparking a passion for homebrewing that ignited a craft beer revolution. I can’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate Zymurgy’s 40th birthday than to thank all those homebrewers who have made American beer what it is today. I hope you enjoy the refreshed magazine and continue to feel inspired by what you discover inside.”

If you would like to get your hands on a Zymurgy issue or subscription, the magazine is available via AHA membership subscription and at homebrew shops nationwide.  There is also a digital archive for Zymurgy that dates back to 2000 – this also includes Spanish-language editions – available on the American Homebrewers Association website.  Prost!

CelisDCPCelis Brewery (Austin, Texas) announced today that it has officially begun the Seasonal Release of its wildly-popular Dubbel Coffee Porter, and this year it is available for the first time in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans.

Created by Christine Celis in 2014 and now recognized as “the world’s first Dubbel Coffee Porter”, Celis Dubbel Coffee Porter is a hybrid-style Porter brewed with Hallertau and Millenium hops, international cold-pressed coffee sourced from Summer Moon Coffee Bar in Austin, and a yeast strain typically used in Belgian-style Dubbels.  This interesting mix of ingredients produces “pleasant tastes of subdued berries, dark malts, and equal amounts of coffee and cocoa from the infusion of the coffee blend.”  Weighing in at a warming 7% ABV, the “robust yet smooth, rich-bodied” Celis Dubbel Coffee Porter promises to be “a perfect cozy beer for the festive months of fall and winter.”

“It blew our minds how quickly we sold out of our Dubbel Coffee Porter last fall,” says Christine Celis, founder of Celis Brewery. “It is an incredibly popular beer. Cascade Brewing Introduces Primordial Noir 2017

Primordial Noir bottle COLACascade Brewing (Portland, Oregon) has officially released Primordial Noir 2017 as the latest offering to join its lineup of bottles projects.

Developed to serve as “a concentrated precursor to Cascade’s Sang Noir project“, Primordial Noir 2017 (10.5% ABV) is an American Sour Ale comprised of “a blend of imperial red ales aged in bourbon and wine barrels for up to two years with Northwest-grown Bing cherries and spices.”  This treatment comes together to offer a sensory experience that “features a more robust bourbon and cherry presence with notes of roast malt, molasses and baking spices.”

“To make our Sang Noir, we take red wine barrel aged reds, blend them with bourbon barrel aged reds, then add 150 pounds of Bing cherries to each barrel,” explained Tim Larrance, Cascade Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “For Primordial Noir, we chose to skip the red wine aged reds and go straight with the bourbon barrel reds and cherries. The reds shine spectacularly with a balanced cherry flavor.”

Primordial Noir 2017 made its official debut at Cascade’s two Portland-area pubs – the Cascade Brewing Barrel House and The Lodge at Cascade Brewing – on October 19 and is now actively making its way into distribution.  You can expect to find this Tier Two offering available in 500ml bottles and on draft at select craft beer-focused retailers, bars and restaurants located in Alabama, Florida, Oregon and throughout the rest of Cascade Brewing’s worldwide distribution network. Tasting Notes: Angelica from Lord Hobo Brewing Co.

LordHoboAngelicaPourFixFor this week’s installment of Tasting Notes, we turned to the heavens for guidance and the beer gods led us to Angelica from Lord Hobo Brewing Co. (Woburn, Massachusetts).

Introduced earlier this year as one of the newest additions to Lord Hobo’s Year-Round portfolio, Angelica is an American Wheat Beer that employs the use of the incredibly popular “brewing techniques and ingredients used in ‘New England-Style’ or ‘Hazy IPAs’.”  By uniting “the sought-after haze and juice-like qualities [with] the more traditional characteristics of wheat beer”, Angelica New England Wheat (5.5% ABV) comes together to be “a highly quaffable beer that showcases the bready, tangy, and elegant sweetness of a wheat beer with the juicy, tropical fruit characteristics attributed from the highly acclaimed Mosaic hop varietal.”

Angelica is available Year-Round in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly retailers, bars and restaurants located in Florida, Massachusetts and throughout the rest of Lord Hobo’s distribution footprint.

Now that we are all a bit more familiar with Angelica’s intentions, let’s get into these Tasting Notes and see how it all translates.

Tasting Notes for Angelica from Lord Hobo Brewing Co.

Appearance: When served in Lord Hobo’s logo Belgian-style tulip glass, this beer resembles a large, glowing Lemonhead (yes, that bright yellow candy from your youth) that is wearing 1.5 fingers of pure white, bubbly foam.  When held to direct light, that bright yellow tone holds and radiates with almost blinding vibrancy. The beer is incredibly hazy, making it almost opaque and nearly impossible to get a visual read on its carbonation level.  Head retention is decent, eventually condensing to a thin, airy cap that occasionally leaves thick slabs of lace behind on the glass.

Aroma:  The aroma is basically just an in-depth meditation on Mosaic hops as it is full of musty mango and peach, pineapple, lemongrass, berry, pine and soft herbal notes. The malts are mild and honestly lost in the all-consuming, juicy hoppiness billowing from the glass . . . not that there is anything wrong with that.

Taste:  The hops take point here as well, leading with lemon and various other citrus notes.  This smoothly shifts to tropical tones of mango, guava, pineapple, and mixed berries.  Lemongrass then blooms and coaxes out gentle notes of pine and herb. The wheat surfaces near the finish to offer a semblance of balance with a little bready sweetness and a slightly tangy character.

Mouthfeel:  Straight-up medium in body with a middling carbonation level, the wheatiness of Angelica really shines here by creating a silky-smooth texture and a pleasant weight.  It is mostly hoppy on the palate, but the wheat does a really nice job balancing things out enough so that the experience is not at all bitter or harsh.  As expected, the 5.5% ABV is not noticeable.  The aftertaste is all citrus-soaked mango.

Final Thoughts: Angelica achieves exactly what it set out to do by finding a comfortable and sensical place somewhere between the worlds of New England-style Pale Ales/IPAs and American Wheat Beers.  It has that clean hop flavor you expect from a Lord Hobo offering, but it has an even more reduced level of bitterness and a silkier mouthfeel than their Pale Ales, IPAs and Double IPAs.  By fully embracing the 40% wheat addition in its recipe, Angelica takes just the right amount of steps toward that American Wheat Beer to set itself apart.  This is not a beer with an identity crisis.  No . . . this beer definitely has an identity and it is all its own. No matter what your allegiances may or may not be to the haze craze, you need to check this beer out.  Prost!

Terrapin Beer Co.’s So Fresh & So Green, Green Explores Fresh Glacier Hops in 2018

TerrapinSoFresh2018Terrapin Beer Co. (Athens, Georgia) has officially announced that the 2018 edition of So Fresh & So Green, Green, a fresh hop IPA showcasing Glacier hops, will begin its Limited Release on Saturday, October 20.

When it came time to select hops for this year’s Fresh Hop/Harvest Ale, the brewing team at Terrapin Beer Co. decided to go with a hop varietal that they have “never used . . . in So Fresh & So Green, Green before”: Glacier hops from Hop Head Farms in Michigan.  These “fun” hops balance “So Fresh & So Green, Green’s malty sweetness” with a “satisfying bitterness” and also bring “notes of citrus and an herbal, woody aroma.”

“We wanted to try hops from somewhere else in the US. We found high-quality hops from Michigan and went for it.

We’re always looking for new hops that are freshest around when we need to brew the beer so that it’s ready in time for our Hop Harvest Festival. That means we have fewer hops to choose from, so we’re really excited about Glacier!”

– Spike Buckowski, Terrapin’s Brewmaster and Founder

Epic Brewing Set to Unleash Three Versions of Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout

EpicBaptistPourEpic Brewing Company (Salt Lake City, Utah) has officially announced that it will send three versions of its fan-favorite Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout out into full distribution in November: Big Bad Baptist Imperial StoutQuadruple Barrel Big Bad Baptist, and Big Bad Baptista.

After stripping its “barrel aging program . . . down to its core and [rebuilding] it with one goal in mind – taking a legendary beer and making it even better”, Epic Brewing is now ready to hit its fans with a “truly Epic” Big Bad Baptist season that will feature the following three takes on its highly coveted Imperial Stout (descriptions sourced from the brewery’s press release):

  • Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout – “This year OG Big Bad Baptist is one of the finest and most fussed over releases we’ve ever produced. Each release is a hand-picked blend of first, second, and third use whiskey barrels. We’ve expanded our barrel aging program to over 2000 barrels and our cellarman track and taste each one as it develops. This attention to detail and the high standards we place on each barrel means the resulting blend is simply the best of the best. This year’s coffee is a Columbian origin roasted by Salt Lake City’s Blue Copper Coffee Roasters. The lightly roasted beans have a nutty and earthy quality that rounds out the chocolate, malt and barrel character. The coffee is still upfront but quick to step aside and show off the barrel character.
  • Quadruple Barrel Big Bad Baptist – Quadruple Barrel Big Bad Baptist is one of those ideas that’s just crazy enough to be great. We started with our Imperial Stout and a grip of rum barrels. These tend to highlight the molasses and toasted marshmallow flavors in the beer and pairs perfectly with coconut as noted by the success of last year’s Triple Barrel Big Bad Baptist. But we felt like there was still room to take this concept and the complexity a step farther and it didn’t take us long to start experimenting with almonds. We packed first-use whiskey barrels with Blue Copper’s Brazil Cruzerio coffee beans, shaved coconut, and slivered almond so all three ingredients could soak up as much barrel character as possible before being added to the beer.
  • Big Bad Baptista – Completing the trio this year is Big Bad Baptista. We just couldn’t imagine a winter without the warm and comforting combination of Mexican coffee, chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla. Adding to its long list of accolades Baptista was ranked #23 in Paste Magazine’s massive 144 Imperial Stout tasting and maintains a solid 4.4 caps on Untappd.

“We wanted this year’s Big Bad Baptist to reflect the complexity and nuance that goes into its making. In a lot of ways this year’s approach is a return to the first few batches we made when our program was only 20 barrels. I have to hand it to our team – handling a program one hundred times larger isn’t easy and you can taste the hard work and passion they put into the beer.”

– Dave Cole, Epic Brewing Co-Founder

All three variants of Big Bad Baptist will enter distribution in mid-November 2018 and will hang around as long as supplies last.  You can expect to find these Limited Release brews at select craft beer establishments located in Florida, Utah and throughout the rest of Epic Brewing’s distribution area.  Prost!
