BrewDog and British Airways Brew Speedbird 100 Transatlantic IPA at Altitude

britishairways_216861850814117In recognition of British Airways’ centenary, BrewDog (Ellon, United Kingdom) has partnered with the airline to create Speedbird 100, a Transatlantic IPA brewed at 40,000 feet.

Armed with an India Pale Ale recipe designed to “work perfectly in the air and adapt to the reduction in taste and smell sensitivity at high altitudes”,  BrewDog founders Martin Dickie and James Watt initiated the brewing process for  Speedbird 100 – named after British Airways’ call sign – “on board one of the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners, while cruising 500mph over the north of Scotland.”  The brewing team – which also included members of the British Airways cabin crew – “mixed water, hops and barley in the onboard beverage makers to start the mashing part of the brewing process.” **A video of the brew day is available below.**

James Watt MBE, BrewDog’s co-founder, said: “It’s been incredible to be able to partner with British Airways in their centenary year and create a completely new beer for their customers.”

Martin Dickie MBE, BrewDog’s co-founder, added: “The key thing is that the bitterness and fruit flavours aren’t really affected by the altitude, so we wanted to play on those two things and ramp up the sweetness. We really hope British Airways customers love Speedbird 100 as much as we do.”

330ml cans of Speedbird 100 Transatlantic IPA will be “exclusively available to British Airways customers on board all long-haul and short-haul flights and in selected lounges from May 1.”  Speedbird 100, along with several other BrewDog offerings, will be available in British Airways’ Club lounge in Terminal 7 at John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport when it opens later this Spring.  British Airways’ new Club lounge at JFK will serve as BrewDog’s “first bar in New York”.  Prost!
