Tapped to be the newest member of Ballast Point’s Discovery Series of “approachable, high-quality and great-tasting beers”, Ballast Point Lager is an “easy-drinking and crisp” Craft Lager brewed with a SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) recipe comprised of “100 percent two-row barley from farms in the West and Northwest and a light touch of Apollo hops from Washington growers.”  Further benefiting from an assist from a floral yeast character that lends “notes of bread, pear and ripe banana”, Ballast Point Lager (4.2% ABV) comes together to be a “clean, low-calorie lager that finishes dry and effervescent.”

“We’re always developing new brews and wanted to bring beer drinkers a sessionable, low-calorie option they can enjoy on any occasion – from a day at the beach or the lake to their neighborhood bar while watching the game,” Ballast Point VP of brewing James Murray said. “But make no mistake, this is not another ‘light’ beer. Ballast Point Brewing Co. Releases White Wine Barrel-Aged Sour Wench

ballastpointlogoBallast Point Brewing Company (San Diego, California) has officially launched its new Trade Street Collection of barrel-aged beers with the nationwide release of White Wine Barrel-Aged Sour Wench.

Here to serve as a Limited Release variant of Ballast Point’s award-winning Sour Wench, White Wine Barrel-Aged Sour Wench is an “innovative new brew” that takes the original 7% ABV ale with blackberries and ages it for more than six months in chardonnay and sauvignon blanc barrels.  This lengthy treatment results in a “tart, refreshing, and delightfully smooth” White Wine Barrel-aged Sour Wench that boasts “aromas of freshly sliced white peach, citrus, woody oak tannins and rich vanilla” and flavor notes of “crushed berries and ripe apricots with a buttery smoothness from the chardonnay barrels.”

“With barrel aging, we’re giving tribute to three different attributes – the oak barrels, the wine that was in them before and the base beer,” said Steve Anderson, Ballast Point Director of Barrel Aging. “The blend that’s in the White Wine Barrel Aged Sour Wench bottles is a really nice layering of both the beer and the wine barrels, making it more complex and an amazing end product.”

White Wine Barrel Aged Sour Wench marks the first release in Ballast Point’s Trade Street Collection, a series “named after the brewery’s barrel-aging cellar, the 80,000-square-foot Trade Street facility.”  Offerings in this series of barrel-aged beers will release quarterly.  Upcoming Trade Street Collection releases will include Rye Barrel Aged Piper Down (Ballast Point’s award-winning Scottish Ale in charred American oak High West rye barrels), High West Barrel Aged Victory at Sea, and Bourbon Barrel Aged Tongue Buckler.

White Wine Barrel Aged Sour Wench is rolling out now and will hang around for a limited time.  You can expect to find this Limited Release offering available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles at select craft beer-focused establishments located in Alabama, Florida, California, Illinois, Virginia and throughout the rest of Ballast Point’s nationwide distribution footprint.  Prost!

Craft Brewers Nationwide Collaborate on Epic Bottle Auction For ‘We Are Stoneman Douglas’ Charity Event

50 vintage and rare signed bottles from over two dozen breweries will auction online to raise funds for victims’ families and survivors of the tragic Parkland, FL shooting.

OAKLAND PARK, FL (April 5, 2018) – Following the horrific events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida this past February, brewers from across the country are coming together to offer assistance and support to those affected most. Over two dozen brewers nationwide have donated rare and vintage bottles of beer — many of which are signed by owners, founders, and head brewers from companies such as Stone Brewing, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and more — in what has become an epic and unique lot of craft beer for the ages.

This lot is being auctioned online via the We Are Stoneman Douglas site (https://one.bidpal.net/wearemsd, click “Auction Items” on menu) with proceeds benefiting the Broward Education Foundation’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas fund. One hundred percent of all funds generated by this project will directly benefit the families of victims, survivors, and those affected by this tragedy. A second lot of signed barrel-aged and vintage beers from Funky Buddha Brewery, and a private dinner for 30, will also be auctioned.

This online auction (with over 50 other incredible auction items) is being organized by the Parkland Golf & Country Club located in Parkland, FL with assistance from Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, Florida. Individuals can bid on the online auctions through Sunday, April 8th. Due to regulations, these bottle lots will be available for local pickup only.

“This has been an amazing show of support and solidarity from brewers around the country, most of whom signed on and contributed unbelievable beers within minutes,” says Ryan Sentz, co-founder of Funky Buddha Brewery and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School graduate. “Although this tragedy was horrific beyond words, we can take heart in the incredible response from the community and others that shows we have the strength and bravery to rise above it and make a true difference in people’s lives.”

Ballast Point Brewing Co. Goes National with Aloha Sculpin Hazy IPA

02-beers-primary-image-Aloha-SculpinBallast Point Brewing Co. (San Diego, California) has officially announced that Aloha Sculpin Hazy IPA is now available nationally as a Limited Release offering.

Arriving as the newest member of the Sculpin IPA family, Aloha Sculpin is a hazy, tropically-themed India Pale Ale that obtains its juicy fruit flavors from a somewhat surprising source.  Instead of relying on fruit additions of any kind, the brewers at Ballast Point turned Aloha Sculpin (7% ABV, 70 IBUS) into “a tropical oasis with aromas and flavors of guava, mango, and pineapple” by using a “distinct yeast strain known as Saccharomyces “Bruxellensis” Trois, or Brux Trois.”  Able to do more than just cultivate these tropical notes, this yeast strain “also adds a slight haze to the beer, creating a smooth mouthfeel to round out its juicy character.”

“We’re always experimenting with new ingredients and methods,” said James Murray, vice president of brewing at Ballast Point. “Most brewers tend to experiment with hops for flavor and aroma. But when we tasted the guava, mango and pineapple notes from this yeast in other R&D recipes we brewed, we knew it would really enhance the bright, tropical fruit characteristics already present in Sculpin IPA.”

Aloha Sculpin IPA is rolling out now and has plans to hang around through the months of spring and summer.  You can expect to find this Limited Release offering available in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at select beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, California, Virginia, and throughout the rest of Ballast Point’s nationwide distribution network.  Prost!

Years later, the Sculpin family has expanded to include Grapefruit, Pineapple, Habanero, Unfiltered – and now Aloha Sculpin.”

Ballast Point Brewing Unveils 2018 Release Calendar

BallastPointglassesBallast Point Brewing Company (San Diego, California) has officially sent out a 2018 Product Release Calendar that features three new series that will realign the brewery’s portfolio, a couple new brews, and few availability updates.

There has been a bit of a lull in brewery calendars lately, but rest assured that we will treat this one just as we have the others.  Ballast Point’s full 2018 Product Release Calendar is available below for you to go over at your own pace, but there are a few highlights and changes that we need to cover before we send you to that document:

  • Ballast Point will restructure its portfolio in 2018 to include three distinct series: The Discovery Series, The Flagship Series, and the Explorer Series.  This change has been put in place to help consumers easily distinguish the brewery’s wide portfolio and find exactly what they are after in a beer selection.
  • Meant to “serve as a great way to ‘discover’ Ballast Point though their approachability and exceptional quality”, the beers in The Discovery Series will all weigh in at 6% ABV or under.  These gateway beers will include Year-Round offerings such as Bonito Blonde, Mango Even Keel and Longfin Lager.  The Discovery Series will also feature a rotating lineup that will include Tart Peach Kolsch (April – July), Grunion (July – November) and Piper Down (December).
  • The Flagship Series will consist of “signature beers like Sculpin, Manta Ray, and Victory at Sea—pinnacles of their styles and premium award-winners. They also carry higher ABVs, 7% and above.”  This series will also consist of Year-Round and Rotating offerings.
  • The Explorer Series will be made up of limited releases that feature “bold, exotic flavors and styles, like barrel-aged and sour offerings.”  This series includes offerings such as Red Velvet (January – February), Tongue Buckler (February – March), and High West Barrel Aged Victory at Sea (November – December).
  • Aloha Sculpin will make its debut in February as a part of the brewery’s Flagship Series.  Aloha Sculpin uses “Brux Trois yeast to turn [the brewery’s] award-winning IPA into a tropical oasis, with bright and refreshing notes of mango, pineapple and guava, along with a slight haze and smooth mouthfeel.”
  • The Explorer Series will also see a brand-new offering with the release of Moscow Mule Ale from March through July 2018.  This offering is Ballast Point’s “take on the classic & refreshing cocktail, with ginger and tart lime in a light kettle sour beer. It’s an effervescent and aromatic beer just begging to be enjoyed in a copper mug.”
  • More Ballast Point offerings will be available in cans in 2018. This includes a rotating can 6-pack in the Discovery Series (Tart Peach Kolsch, Grunion Pale Ale, and Piper Down Scottish Ale), Unfiltered Sculpin IPA and Manta Ray DIPA in 12oz cans, as well as Sculpin IPA and Fathom IPA in 16oz cans.
  • Due to all of these changes and updates, a few offerings have been redesignated to become Seasonal (Grunion & Watermelon Dorado) or draft-only (Pumpkin Down, California Amber, Big Eye) releases in 2018.

That should just about cover all the details that we needed to go over, but there is still quite a bit to discover on the lengthy calendar below.  Be sure to check it out so that you can be properly prepared for the fantastic year of beer ahead from Ballast Point Brewing Company.  Prost!

Ballast Point Brewing Set for Black Friday Release of High West Barrel-Aged Victory At Sea

BPHighWestVaSsideBallast Point Brewing Co. (San Diego, California) has announced that it will officially begin the limited release of High West Barrel-Aged Victory at Sea Imperial Porter on Black Friday, November 24.

When it comes to widely-available Imperial Stouts and Porters, you are going to be hard-pressed to find a beer that can go toe-to-toe with Victory at Sea Imperial Porter with Coffee & Vanilla in a blind tasting.  This beer is a true standout in its original form, but Ballast Point has decided to step things up a bit this year by creating an incredibly special, barrel-aged version that has been simply named High West Barrel-Aged Victory at Sea.

To craft this Limited Release offering, the brewers at Ballast Point took their classic Victory at Sea Imperial Porter – already infused with cold-steeped coffee and vanilla – and aged it carefully in Bourbon and Rye Whiskey oak casks sourced from High West Distillery.  Once the aging process was completed, the various barrels that housed the beer were then blended “to create new layers of complexity” and impart “notes of soft caramel and smokey oak over a rich dark chocolate and roasted almond body.” The finished High West Barrel-Aged Victory at Sea weighs in at 12% ABV.

High West Barrel-Aged Victory at Sea will officially release in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles at Ballast Point Tasting Room locations on Friday, November 24. Distribution will begin shortly after the initial launch. Once fully available, beer lovers can look for this Limited Release offering at select beer establishments in Alabama, Florida, California, Virginia, and throughout the rest of Ballast Point Brewing Co.’s nationwide distribution area.  Exact dates and details for distribution have not yet been made available, but we will update this post with that information just as soon as we have it.  Stay tuned.  Prost!

Ballast Point Brewing Releases Nitro Bottles of Red Velvet Stout

02-beers-primary-image-redvelvetBallast Point Brewing (San Diego, California) recently announced the release of their first bottled nitro beer, Red Velvet Nitro Stout.

Created to be a “mind-bending beer” that perfectly replicates the dessert for which it is named, Red Velvet is an Oatmeal Stout that has been tinted red thanks to the beets used during the brewing process.  Supplying more than just color, the beets also give this beer an “earthy character that complements the chocolate flavor and aroma.”  The use of nitrogen rounds the beer off by lending a “creamy smoothness to the mouthfeel” that is “reminiscent of icing.”  Although this is meant to be a dessert beer, Red Velvet Nitro Stout is by no means overly sweet or heavy because it weighs in at a very reasonable 5.5% ABV.

Arriving as Ballast Point Brewing’s first nitrogenated bottle release, Red Velvet Nitro Stout has been packaged in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles.  This limited release is currently available at all Ballast Point Tasting Room locations, and will start turning up in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of the brewery’s distribution area over the next two weeks.  Red Velvet Nitro Stout is sure to be a unique drinking experience, so keep an eye out for this one the next time you find yourself at the bottle shop.  Prost!
