Proof Brewing Co. Schedules Grand Opening for New Facility

proofbrewinglogoProof Brewing Co. (Tallahassee, Florida) has officially announced that it will hold a grand opening celebration for its massive new facility at 1320 South Monroe Street during the weekend of February 8.

After nearly a year of renovations and $6 million invested, Proof Brewing is finally ready to reveal all that it has done to revitalize the 34,000 square foot historical building – an abandoned Coca-Cola Bottling Facility built in 1948 – “centrally located near the redevelopment of South Monroe and the downtown district” of Tallahassee.  This new expanded brewing facility will up Proof Brewing’s game with the following features and opportunities (this information was sourced directly from the brewery’s press release):

  • The larger building and additional fermentation capacity will allow brewery staff to expand production of Proof Brewing Co.’s core lineup of bold and flavorful beers. La La Land West Coast-style IPA and Lager will be added to the core lineup of cans next to the wildly popular Eightfive-0 American Pale Ale and Mango Wit Belgian-Style Wit in the months following the facility’s opening. Additional package varieties will be added for the tasting room and distribution release.
  • The inclusion of a $150,000 onsite lab and centrifuge will increase the efficiency and consistency of every beer. The new technology will significantly improve the shelf stability and production quality.
  • The larger tasting room will feature a full bar pouring twenty-four beer taps, wine, house sangria, and hand-crafted cocktails. Brewery tours will begin in the new merchandise area where fans can access growler, crowler, and package varieties to-go. Guests can relax in the all-weathered covered patio and enjoy over 8000 square feet of beer garden space.
  • A new private event space will offer guests a stunning atmosphere to host engagement, holiday, retirement, and birthday parties as well as corporate meetings and events, with views into the brewery and access to a private beer garden.
  • Proof Brewing has partnered with local chefs to open a new onsite restaurant concept called Proper. Proper will also be available for catered private events and dinners in the new event space.
  • As growth in the new facility continues, additional employees and support staff will grow when new markets are reached throughout the state of Florida and beyond.

“From day one our intention has been to give Tallahassee the most outstanding beer possible. Through the dedication of our team and the evolution of growth, that is now a reality. This growth ultimately means a higher quality of life and improved work conditions for our entire team as well as offering all of Tallahassee a welcoming and relaxing space to enjoy world class beer,” said Byron & Angela Burroughs, Proof Brewing Company founders. “We can’t wait for you to experience our new forever home.”

The grand opening of Proof Brewing’s new facility at 1320 South Monroe Street will begin on Friday, February 8 and carry throughout the weekend. After the grand opening, the new brewery and taproom will have expanded hours of operation and be open seven days a week.  Due to the move, Proof Brewing Co.’s previous location at Railroad Square is no longer operational.  Prost!

Field Trip: 6th Annual Florida Tap Invitational at Proof Brewing Co.

FLTAPLogoLast month, we were lucky enough to receive an invite to the 6th Annual Florida Tap Invitational at Proof Brewing Co. (Tallahassee, Florida) and we have returned – after a bit of a delay – to provide you with a recap and photographic account of our experience at this truly special beer festival.

Taking place each year at Proof Brewing Co. in Tallahassee, the Florida Tap Invitational is an exclusive beer festival that aims to collect the finest and most interesting/innovative beers being produced in Florida so that craft beer fans can experience them all in one spot.  Beyond just being a celebration of the state’s craft beer community, this year’s event went an extra mile by serving as a fundraiser for Proof Brewing Co.’s neighbors in the Florida Panhandle that were affected by Hurricane Michael.

The description of the event that we received was very similar to the paragraph above, but we had no idea how intimate this beer festival would be until we turned the corner to the parking lot to get in line.  The entirety of the Florida Tap Invitational takes place in Proof Brewing Co.’s parking lot, beer garden and tasting room – none of which are incredibly large.  Despite that fact, someone who undoubtedly was a savant at Tetris found ample space to set up pour stations – most of them housed under tents – for 45 or so breweries and still had room for food vendors, a stage for musical entertainment and areas for attendees to congregate.

We entered with the VIP ticket holders, and the ID check/ticket redemption process was speedy and efficient.  As soon as we received our glass and got through the gate, our worries of over-crowding – a very real occurrence at many beer festivals – were quickly put at ease.  The amount of tickets allotted for this event was nearly perfect, and the layout basically kept the crowd moving at a slowly churning pace.  Even after General Admission was let in and attendance was at its peak, we never felt rushed or crowded and always had somewhere to go to hang out and have a conversation.  At times, many pour stations were wide open and allowed guests plenty of time to chat with representatives from their favorite breweries.

As far as the beer goes, the level of quality at the Florida Tap Invitational was as advertised.  Nearly every brewery came with the intention to show you their absolute best, and the event was utterly awash with countless one-off, rare, and limited release beers.  To give you an idea of the insane brews that graced our glasses during this event, here are our “Top 5 Most Memorable Beers of the 6th Annual Florida Tap Invitational” (list is in no particular order):

  • Magnanimous Brewing | Flourish – New England-style Wheat.  A new brewery coming to Tampa, Magnanimous made quite the first impression with a Wheat Ale that was bright, hoppy, luscious and refreshing.
  • Deep Brewing Co. | Bourbon Barrel CYNNICAL – Imperial Stout with cinnamon, ancho chile, cacao & vanilla.  CYNNICAL blew us away with big notes of brownie batter, dark chocolate, bourbon and just the right pop of heat.
  • Aardwolf Brewing Company | Bearer of the Cup of the Blood of the Ancients – Barrel-aged Raspberry Sour.  The name immediately captured our attention, and the beer itself delivered a wonderfully complex experience filled with tart raspberry goodness.
  • Invasive Species Brewing | Malkovich Malkovich – Hazy IPA double dry-hopped with Mosaic, Citra & Cashmere hops.  This IPA was ridiculously juicy and had just the right amount of delightful dankness. Oh, and the label artwork on the can is just stunning.
  • Proof Brewing Co. | Coffee Vanilla Hazelnut Bourbon Barrel-aged Glass Emperor – Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Stout.  The home team stood up and showed out with a tap list comprised of over 30 beers, but this one set itself apart by nailing every descriptor in its name.  Pronounced and impactful but not overly cloying, this was THE dessert stout of the festival for us.

In addition to all the amazing beer, the Florida Tap Invitational also featured an incredibly solid lineup of food trucks/vendors and an unforgettable musical performance from Tallahassee’s Catfish Alliance and their majestic hype man “Sex Manatee”.  Once all the pieces of this event – from the beer to the food to the band – started functioning as a whole, the Florida Tap Invitational was then able to go next level and become a true celebration filled with nothing but good times and vibes.

Absolutely everything mentioned above was truly fantastic, but the coolest and most interesting part of the Florida Tap Invitational was how the brewers/brewery representatives behaved while at the event.  It was very clear that they were all there to talk to fans and properly showcase what makes their breweries special, but throughout the event we noticed that almost every single one of them found a moment to disappear into the crowd in search of a beer they were excited about. Sure, the “I need a beer, I’ll be right back” kind of moment happens at all beer festivals, but this was something different.  We ran into countless of them at other breweries’ tables and they were just as giddy as the ticket-holders surrounding them for the chance to try these beers.  They were talking shop, catching a laugh with old friends, and just genuinely stoked to be there.  At times it had the air of a company holiday party and showed that a very real camaraderie exists in Florida’s brewing community.

This speaks volumes for the Florida Tap Invitational because if the brewers and brewery reps – people who are at beer fests/events constantly all year long – are clearly having a great time and genuinely want to be there, that means you, the beer lover, need to be there.  There is no better endorsement for a beer festival than that, so check out the photos below and go ahead and make a note that you will need to be in Tallahassee in 2019 for the 7th Annual Florida Tap Invitational.  Prost!

Proof Brewing Co. to Relocate & Expand After Acquiring Former Coca-Cola Facility

ProofBrewingLogoProof Brewing Co. (Tallahassee, Florida) has officially announced that it will enter the next phase of its growth and expansion by beginning renovations on a former Coca-Cola Bottling Company building located at 1320 South Monroe Street in Tallahassee, Florida.

When it began production in 2012, Proof Brewing Co. encountered high demand from the beer drinking masses in Florida right out of the gate. As a result, the brewery has since “experienced explosive growth, doubling production each year with 6,000 barrels produced in 2017.”  Although this level of growth is a fantastic problem to have, the folks at the brewery quickly realized that they needed to address the fact that they were outgrowing their current facility.  After weighing their options and commencing a search for a location that made sense for the brewery and their community, the Proof Brewing Co. crew is happy to report that they have remedied their situation with the recent acquisition of the “34,000 square-foot former Coca-Cola Bottling Company building . . . centrally located near the redevelopment of South Monroe and the downtown district and walking distance to beautiful Cascades Park.”

“This will be a year of growth and development for Proof Brewing Company. We are proud of our growth in Tallahassee and we’re thrilled to reinvest back into the community that has been so supportive of us. It will be an amazing experience to revitalize a historical building near the flourishing downtown district of Tallahassee on South Monroe. Reintroducing manufacturing jobs to this district to serve the Tallahassee community will be a very exciting journey,”

– Byron & Angela Burroughs, Proof Brewing Company’s founders

With an improvement/investment budget set at $5 million, Proof Brewing Co. will begin renovations on the new facility in March and has tentatively scheduled to be completed by the winter of 2018.  These renovations will provide the brewery with the following upgrades and opportunities:

  • The renovation and expansion will allow Proof Brewing Co. to increase production to over 15,000 barrels within the first two years, and the facility’s potential production capacity will increase to 30,000 barrels with additional room to grow.
  • The expansion will feature efficiency upgrades, a quality control lab, and additional fermentation capacity.
  • The larger building and additional fermentation capacity will enable the brew staff to expand production of Proof Brewing Co.’s core lineup of bold and flavorful beers.
  • The new facility will also allow for the addition of more packaged brands in cans, in addition to their wildly popular Eightfive-0 American Pale Ale and Mango Wit Belgian-Style Wit.
  • An expanded tasting room experience will feature Proof Brewing Co.’s year-round beers on draft in addition to seasonal and pilot batch beer. Guests can enjoy beers on-site while relaxing in the family friendly tasting room and play outdoor games in the beer garden. Plans are also in place to add a kitchen and private event space.
  • There will also be an on-site retail store where fans can purchase merchandise and packaged beer.  Growlers and crowlers will be filled at the tasting room bar.
  • Proof Brewing Co. currently employs thirty staff members between the tasting room, the production facility and administration. This number will increase as the new facility will require additional employees and support staff as new markets are reached throughout the state of Florida and beyond.
  • The Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality (OEV) projects that this project will have a $23 million total economic impact on the community with a total of 102 jobs.

Proof Brewing Co.’s current brewery and taproom – located at 644 McDonnell Drive | Tallahassee, Florida –  will continue normal operations until renovations on the new facility are completed.  Be sure to swing by the original location to support Proof Brewing Co. during this transition and stay tuned for more information concerning the grand opening of the brewery’s future site later in the year.  Prost!
