TBBW Event: Omnipollo Spotlight and Lunar Lycan Release at Angry Chair Brewing

angrychairOn Wednesday, March 8 at 4 p.m., Angry Chair Brewing (6401 N Florida Ave, Tampa, Florida) will get in on some Tampa Bay Beer Week action by hosting their friends from Omnipollo (Stockholm, Sweden) for an evening of special brews and a limited bottle release of their collaboration beer, Lunar Lycan Imperial Marzipan Coffee Cream Stout.

To create something truly special for Tampa Bay Beer Week (TBBW), Angry Chair Brewing has crossed mash paddles with Omnipollo to brew up Lunar Lycan Imperial Marzipan Coffee Cream Stout.  Brewed with toasted almonds and dark roast coffee, this 11.5% ABV Cream Stout proudly embodies both breweries’ reputations for pushing the limits when it comes to the flavor profiles of their beers.  Bottles of Lunar Lycan will be available for purchase during this event for $20 each (limit of 4 bottles per customer).

In addition to the bottle release, Angry Chair plans to have Lunar Lycan available on tap alongside two guest brews from Omnipollo.  Since these guest kegs are being shipped from another country, there is an outside chance that they may not make it in time for this event.  If – and we stress “IF” – that happens, the folks at Angry Chair have plans in place to tap some other “cool beers in an attempt to make up for it.”  **UPDATE 3.8.17** The Omnipollo kegs have arrived and they are as follows:

Omnipollo Beers to be Featured The Event

  • Magnus Opus Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Cinnamon Vanilla Pecan Caramel Poppy Charcoal Bacon Stout  ABV – 14.5%
  • Noa Bourbon Pecan Mud Cake Stout  ABV – 12.9%  **UPDATE 3.8.17**

This event begins at 4 p.m. on March 8 and will go on until either the beers kick or the tasting room closes.  No tickets are required as this is a pay as you go event.  Just come as you are, follow the rules posted below (#dontparkonfern), and have a good time at what will be one of many awesome TBBW events from Angry Chair Brewing.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Sundance Grapefruit Saison from Lonerider Brewing Company

loneriderSundancecan.jpgAs the seasons begin to slowly shift, we welcome the coming spring by recording some Tasting Notes on Sundance Grapefruit Saison from Lonerider Brewing Company (Raleigh, North Carolina).

Set to officially debut on March 6 as Lonerider Brewing’s newest spring seasonal, Sundance Grapefruit Saison is a “traditionally inspired Saison” that has received an added kick of grapefruit refreshment.  The use of fresh grapefruit is meant provide “extra tartness and citrus flavors” to complement the unique characteristics of the beer’s yeast and Jarrylo hops.  Clocking in at just 6% ABV and 34 IBUs, this Saison promises a crisp and fresh experience that “exhibits legendary smoothness and taste.”  When released, Sundance Grapefruit Saison will be available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments in Alabama, North Carolina, and throughout the rest of Lonerider’s distribution area.

That should get everyone caught up on the background information for Sundance Grapefruit Saison, so let’s not waste another moment and get to some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Sundance Grapefruit Saison from Lonerider Brewing Company

Appearance: Bright and vibrant, Sundance Grapefruit Saison fills the glass with a hazy body that is deep orange at its core, but surrounded by shades of color that taper from lighter oranges down to straw yellow.  Held to direct light, yellows push through a bit more but the deeper oranges hold most of their ground.  A cautious pour produced over three fingers of loose, bubbly white foam.  The head falls rather quickly, leaving a paper-thin, airy top cap that drops wispy tracks of lace on the glass from time to time.

Aroma: Just as billed, this beer grabs the nose’s attention with distinct notes of pithy grapefruit and Saison yeast.  The grapefruit note is big, incredibly fresh, and wonderfully enticing.  This is complemented nicely by trademark peppery and musty Saison qualities.  It may sound simple and straightforward, but each aromatic waft of this beer convincingly suggests that you need to take a sip.

Taste: The brewers have represented the Saison well here by allowing the characteristic flavors of the style to take center stage.  Wonderfully earthy, this beer is filled with notes of wet wood and grain, mustiness, herbaceousness, and just a touch of barnyard.  The yeast then shifts to its sweet and spicy side to add tones of black pepper and citrus fruit.  This makes for a seamless transition to the grapefruit, lending a supporting hand that is sweet, bitter and a little tart.  The grapefruit is easily recognizable but held in check to only act as a counterbalance to the spicy, peppery qualities of the yeast.  Nicely composed.

Mouthfeel: This beer falls on the lighter side of medium in body and displays a lively carbonation presence.  This makes for a crisp and easy-drinking sip with a beautifully dry finish.  The beer plays with the palate by being earthy, sweet, bitter and lightly tart.  The ABV is subdued and plays no role in the experience.  The aftertaste is a touch of lingering black pepper and grapefruit.

Final Thoughts: From the first sip, it is quite obvious that Sundance Grapefruit Saison was meant to be a Saison first and a Fruit Beer second.  Saison characteristics absolutely dominate the flavor and only allow the grapefruit a supporting role in that arena.  With that said, there is a bit of give and take here when you consider that the grapefruit acts as the prominent seductive element in the beer’s aroma.  The grapefruit unquestionably knows its place, and that is to lift up, accentuate and celebrate the signature qualities of the Saison style.  If I was forced to voice one gripe about the beer, it would be concerning its lack of head retention.  Saisons typically have a big, rocky top cap that stubbornly lasts throughout the experience to boost the beer’s aromatics.  Sundance falters a bit in that regard, but truly excels in so many other areas.  This offering defines the idea of full-flavored, but it still remains refreshing and gulp inducing.  This is a remarkably well thought out brew, and I definitely see myself enjoying many cans of Sundance Grapefruit Saison this spring.  Prost!

Concrete Beach Brewery Steps Up Their IPA Game by Packaging TangeRica and Más Hops

concretebeachlogoConcrete Beach Brewery (Miami, Florida) recently announced that TangeRica Wheat IPA and Más Hops Double IPA will soon be hitting shelves as their newest packaged offerings.

The first new IPA to find its way into Concrete Beach Brewery’s portfolio of packaged beers is TangeRica Wheat India Pale Ale. This variant of the brewery’s Year-Round Rica Wheat IPA ups the level of citrus refreshment by incorporating tangerine peel and juice into its recipe.  This full-bodied, 6.5% ABV Wheat IPA is a ” little drier and crisper, and bursting with . . . notes of citron blossom, grapefruit peel, orange, and lemongrass, while a wheat-heavy malt bill and subtle hop bitterness round out the experience.”  TangeRica Wheat IPA will be available in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles beginning on March 6.  Once released, you can expect to find this one at grocery and liquor stores located in Concrete Beach’s distribution area of South Florida.

“It was very fun testing out recipes for TangeRica, as we were trying to find the perfect balance of acidity, bitterness and flavor from the fruit and hop profile,” said Marco Reyna, head brewer for Concrete Beach. “I think we hit the nail right on the head with this one, and I’m excited to introduce it to the South Florida market!”

Looking for an even bigger punch of hops?  Well, Concrete Beach also has you covered in that department with the limited release of Más Hops in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans.  First tapped as a Seasonal offering in 2015, this Double India Pale Ale was so popular with local hopheads that it has since earned itself a permanent tap handle in the brewery’s Social Hall.  This comes as no surprise when you consider that Más Hops lives up to its name by featuring copious amounts of Warrior, Chinook, Citra and Centennial hops.  Wonderfully balanced by a firm malty base, this offering proves to be a “hugely aromatic and flavorful IPA . . . [that] boasts a bouquet of pine and citrus that sets your palate up to appreciate the flavors of orange and grapefruit rind.” Packaged in 12 oz. cans, this limited release of Más Hops Double IPA will also see availability in South Florida beginning on March 6.

If you are down in South Florida and hoppy brews are on your mind, just make a mental note now that 6-packs of TangeRica Wheat IPA and Más Hops Double IPA are headed your way next week.  Prost!

The Bruery Makes a Difference with Release of Share This: OC

the-bruery-share-this-collection_editedThe Bruery (Placentia, California) announced today that it will release Share This: OC this month as the latest offering in a series of Imperial Stouts that gives “money back to the region which inspired, or contributed to, the beer’s flavor profile.”

Launched in 2016, the Share This program was created as a fundraising effort for charities in regions that supplied ingredients or inspiration for each release.  For the third installment in this series, The Bruery focuses on their “home county and its history as a significant growing region for oranges.”  Share This: OC starts with a base of a rich, chocolatey, and roasty Imperial Stout that is then “dosed with
orange zest, TCHO cacao nibs, and vanilla beans” to produce an orange-chocolate experience that instantly transports its drinker to the orange groves of California.

In keeping with the intentions of this series, The Bruery will donate $1 for each bottle of Share This: OC produced to Food Forward of Southern California. With a motto of “Harvest Food, Fight Hunger, Build Community,” Food Forward is a 501(c)(3) charity that “rescues fresh, local produce that would normally go to waste from backyard fruit trees, public orchards, farmers markets, and the downtown Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market.” By doing so, Food Forward provides hunger relief by donating 100% of rescued goods to over 300 agencies across eight counties in Southern California.  The release of Share This: OC marks the first time that the program’s donations will benefit efforts in the United States.

“It’s hard to not have an affinity for oranges when you grow up in Orange County,” shared The Bruery Founder & CEO Patrick Rue. “Oranges and chocolate are a natural pair, each flavor enhancing the other. We’re excited to bring this flavor combination to Share This, and to support Food Forward, a local charity that benefits our community by providing delicious, fresh fruit to those who might not have access to it otherwise.”

“We are thrilled to be the selected non-profit to benefit from the current release of Share This,” expressed Food Forward Founder & Executive Director, Rick Nahmias. “The ethos, practices and vibe of The Bruery is so aligned with Food Forward and our work to eradicate food waste and act as a bridge to get fresh healthy produce to over 1.25 million of our region’s most vulnerable. The generosity of this program and partnership is a huge boon to Food Forward and will allow us to continue to deepen our work to harvest food, fight hunger and build community across Southern California.”

Share This: OC will officially release on March 14 when it becomes available for direct purchase from TheBrueryStore.com, The Bruery Tasting Room in Placentia, and the Bruery Terreux Tasting Room in Anaheim.  This limited release will then enter distribution during the month of March, and you will be able to find 750ml bottles of Share This: OC at fine craft beer establishments located in Florida, California and throughout the rest of The Bruery’s distribution footprint.  Be sure to pick up a bottle of Share This: OC this month so that you can easily do your part in supporting the wonderful cause of Food Forward and the Share This program.  Prost!

In an effort to accommodate those amongst us that suffer from a gluten allergy or sensitivity, Avondale Brewing Co. has officially expanded their Year-Round lineup to include a hop-laden, gluten free-option.  Train Hopper is an “assertively hopped” American Pale Ale that employs the use of new hop varietals to provide “big notes of citrus, tropical fruit, and pine.”  At 5.5% ABV and 50 IBUs, Train Hopper is sure to quench the thirst and satisfy the hop craving of any craft beer fan – gluten intolerant or not.

Like all Avondale brews, Train Hopper’s name tells a story.  Here is the inspiration behind this offering:

Scotch on Scotch Debuts for Boulevard Brewing Company

boulevardscotchonscotchBoulevard Brewing Company (Kansas City, Missouri) recently announced the release of their newest Smokestack Series offering, Scotch on Scotch Oak-aged Imperial Scotch Ale.

Drawing inspiration from the previous releases of Snow & Tell Oak-aged Scotch Ale and Rye on Rye, Boulevard Brewing has doubled down once again to create Scotch on Scotch.  This new Smokestack Series Limited Release beer starts with a massive malt base “created by layering caramel and amber malts with just a touch of peat smoked malt for additional complexity.”  The recipe also includes three hop varietals that were carefully chosen to lend balance and spicy earthiness, and brown sugar that was incorporated during the boil to impart “suggestions of toffee and molasses and a slightly sticky mouthfeel.”  Finally, this Imperial Scotch Ale lives up to its name by eventually finding itself aging on Scotch whisky barrel chips to “coax rich woody, char and vanilla notes along with the essence of Scotch whisky into a hearty, warming beer.”

Like most new offerings from Boulevard Brewing Company, Scotch on Scotch Oak-aged Imperial Scotch Ale has begun an initial release in the Greater Kansas City Area to allow local fans first dibs on the beer.  This limited offering will then become available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at fine beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida and other select markets that typically see Smokestack Series Limited Release beers from Boulevard.  This is just one of many exciting new beers heading to shelves and taps in the near future from Boulevard Brewing, so stay tuned for more news and keep an eye out for Scotch on Scotch while on your next beer run.  Prost!
