angrychairOn Saturday, November 26, Angry Chair Brewing (6401 N Florida Ave, Tampa, Florida) will host a two-session 2nd Anniversary celebration featuring a killer draft list and the bottle release of Bourbon Barrel Aged Fudge Bucket with Vanilla Beans.

As a means of saying thank you for “sitting . . . in [their] ‘angry’ chairs, lining up at bottle releases, and simply making [their] jobs worthwhile,” the folks at Angry Chair Brewing are pulling out all the stops to treat their fans to a 2nd Anniversary Party truly worthy of their undying devotion. All pours on draft will cost $5 each and will vary in size.  Some of the areas pouring beer at this event will be cash only.  If you do not have cash, you will be able to purchase beer tickets inside.  To cut down on line times and just help with the overall flow of the event, the brewery suggests that you just plan ahead and bring cash.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase bottles of the limited release 2nd Anniversary Imperial Stout – Bourbon Barrel-aged Fudge Bucket with Vanilla Beans.  Bottles are limited to one per ticketed guest and can be purchased for $25 each.  Bottles sales are cash only.

The Angry Chair Brewing 2nd Anniversary Party is a ticketed event (**UPDATE – THIS EVENT IS OFFICIALLY SOLD OUT – UPDATE**), and tickets can be purchased beginning Saturday, November 12th at noon (click here for a direct link to the ticket page).  Tickets are $30 each (maximum of 2 tickets per person) and that gets you an anniversary glass, one draft pour, and the ability to purchase the special release anniversary bottle.  This event has been limited to 100 tickets for each of the two sessions (200 tickets total) on Saturday, November 26:

Left Coast Brewing Co. Launches Rebrand with Updated Hop Juice Triple IPA

leftcoastlogoLeft Coast Brewing Co. (San Clemente, California) recently announced plans to completely rebrand their existing lineup of beers, and this process will begin with the update and release of Hop Juice Triple India Pale Ale.

Craft beer fans throughout the distribution area of Left Coast Brewing Co. will soon see the brewery’s offerings sporting a new look on shelves.  Left Coast’s award-winning Hop Juice Double IPA is not only the first to receive the new packaging, but it is also getting a fully reformulated recipe to become Hop Juice Triple India Pale Ale.  This updated version sees the addition of “Mosaic hops, a completely new look and an increase from 9.7% to 10% ABV.”  Confident that Hop Juice Triple IPA will be a huge hit with hopheads, the folks at the brewery have decided that this offering will completely replace the previous Double IPA version.

“We wanted to express our beach vibe through our packaging bringing back the bright colors from each beer,” says Tommy Hadjis, General Manager of Left Coast Brewing. “We also strived for consistency throughout our entire brand with some signature stripes on each item.”

Cigar City Brewing Continues Journey Into The Dark Woods Series

dark-woods-web-1Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, Florida) recently announced the arrival of The Dark Woods Double Wood-aged Strong Brown Ale (2016) as the latest offering in a series devoted to exploring the world of wood-aged beers.

Over the years, Cigar City Brewmaster Wayne Wambles has become quite fond of aging beer in wooden vessels and using wood in his recipes.  Through constant experimentation, his curiosity has grown into a passion that has ultimately made him an authority within the craft beer community on wood and barrel aging (“so much so that he was asked to write the introduction to Peter Bouckaert and Dick Cantwell’s recent book Wood & Beer: A Brewer’s Guide”).  To further explore the realm of wood-aged beers, Wambles has created The Dark Woods Series, “a succession of beers dark in color and aged on wood of various origins and formats.”  Previous releases in the series have used woods from the United States, France and Hungary, and have “explored the use of the same wood toasted to different levels of color and flavor to enhance different flavors and qualities of the oak.”

Arriving as the third release in this series, The Dark Woods 2016 starts with a base of a Strong Brown Ale brewed with “Golden Promise, a complex base malt from the United Kingdom, and five other special malt varieties for a depth of flavor not commonly found in the style.”  This ale was hopped and dry-hopped with HBC 472, an experimental hop varietal that provides notes of coconut and “rustic woodiness.”  Once the beer completed primary fermentation and was ready for the aging process, the brewers introduced padauk wood from Central Africa and sugar maple sourced from the northeastern United States “to impart woody, rustic notes and subtle hints of brown sugar as well as wood tannins for texture.”  The finished beer produces “rich aromas of molasses, bread crust and toffee . . .  complemented by more subtle notes of vanilla and coconut on the nose, while a formidable maltiness on the tongue hints at bitter chocolate and black licorice.”

The Dark Woods 2016 is available now as a limited release offering and will hang around while supplies last.  You can find this brew in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at select craft beer establishments within Cigar City Brewing’s distribution area.  Be sure to pick up your bottle of The Dark Woods to experience a meticulously crafted offering from a brewmaster at the height of his skills.  Prost!

Fun Fact: The Cigar City’s Wood-aging Process – “The process for adding wood to The Dark Woods beers is as unique as the beers themselves. Rather than age the beer in wooden vessels, a process that is fraught with the dangers of oxidation and infection, we instead use wooden spirals. Measuring in at 48” long, these spirals are made from the same wood that is used for barrel staves. The spirals go into a unique vessel called a Spinbot fashioned at Cigar City from an old beer serving tank. Our team fitted the tank with inlets and outlets to create a vessel capable of continual beer re-circulation. After the spirals are put into the tank, a pump moves the beer from the fermenter and into the tank where it’s spun at 50 cycles per second over the spirals before being sent back into the fermentation vessel. This continual re-circulation of beer over the spirals allows us to use fewer spirals and complete the wood-ageing process in a significantly shorter period of time.”

Tasting Notes: Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit from SweetWater Brewing

squeezebox-bottle-smallSince the wildly popular India Pale Ale style has been inexplicably missing from Tasting Notes as of late, we shall remedy this situation by pouring up a Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit from SweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia) to feature in this week’s segment.

Not too long ago, I let you all know of SweetWater Brewing Company’s plans to release Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit this November as the brewery’s newest winter release in their Catch n’ Release Series of seasonal brews (click here to check that out).  Just as the name suggests, this offering is a juicy India Pale Ale boasting “five tropical hop additions and dosed with a shot of . . . grapefruit.”  This 6.1% ABV IPA is available now through January and can be found in 12 oz. cans, 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles, in the Winter Variety Mixed 12-Pack of cans and bottles, and on draft.  Look for this one to turn up at craft beer retailers in Alabama, Florida, and throughout SweetWater’s full distribution footprint.  With the pertinent background information now covered, let’s pop open this can and get to some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit from SweetWater Brewing Company

Appearance: Squeeze Box presents itself as a copper-hued orange in color.  Held to direct light, these deep, burnt oranges gain intensity and brilliance.  The beer is completely clear and displays a lively carbonation activity surging skyward to feed the head.  Speaking of that head, the pour produced two fingers of creamy, white foam that slowly falls to a tight, lasting half finger. The foam proves that it has some good stick to it by painting patterns of lace across the glass.

Aroma: The aromatic profile of this beer is absolutely dominated by grapefruit zest and juice.  Incredibly citrusy and inviting.  Surprisingly, the hop presence is not as pungent as one might expect from an IPA brewed by SweetWater.  Instead, a more reserved tropical hop presence is here to lend notes of citrus, pineapple and mango to further support the showcased grapefruit.  I believe “alluring” is the proper word to use here.

Taste: The grapefruit certainly came to play here and it once again leads the way.  That grapefruit character is ridiculously clean and allows you to experience every aspect of the fruit: pith, meat, juice and zest.  The hops meld easily with the grapefruit and further intensify this juicy experience by adding notes of tangerine, mango, papaya, and an extra punch of grapefruit bitterness.  The malt sweetness is nicely amplified to act as a lovely counterbalance to the sharp and bitter qualities of the grapefruit.  A lot of thought went into creating this balancing note in a way that avoids being cloyingly sweet or distracting from the added grapefruit, and it is spot on.  Mighty tasty.

Mouthfeel: This brew is on the lighter side of medium in body with a big carbonation presence.  This wonderfully crisp sip creates an experience that is easy drinking and outstandingly refreshing.  The ABV at 6.1% is nicely hidden and only tickles the throat occasionally with the faintest of heat.  Spoiler alert: the aftertaste is all grapefruit goodness.

Final Thoughts: There is no denying that Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit is another home-run from SweetWater Brewing Company.  The grapefruit is superbly presented, translating in both flavor and aroma as incredibly clean, natural and refreshing.  The hop varietals utilized here were the perfect selections to support and complement the featured grapefruit while taking nothing away from it.  With all of that said, what I really dig about this beer is the slightly elevated malt presence that tempers the bitter grapefruit with just enough sweetness.  It is reminiscent of sprinkling sugar on your morning grapefruit, and it is flawlessly executed.  If fruit-forward IPAs are your jam, make a note to try some Squeeze Box IPA with Grapefruit during its current release as a winter seasonal.  Prost!

Due South Brewing Co. to Release Three Beers in November

Due South Brewing Co. (Boynton, Beach, Florida) has quite the month planned with a November release calendar consisting of Maple Orange Imperial Caramel Cream Ale, Mexican Standoff Porter, and Citrafied Pale Ale.

To add another delicious layer to Caramel Cream Month (a celebration of the brewery’s classic and best-selling Caramel Cream Ale), Due South Brewing Co. will begin distribution of Maple Orange Imperial Caramel Cream Ale as a Winter Seasonal release.  First brewed in 2014 for the Extreme Beer Fest in Boston, Massachusetts, this offering starts with a base of the brewery’s Imperial Caramel Cream Ale and takes it to another level of decadence with the additions of maple syrup and Florida oranges.  This combination results in an 8.2% ABV Cream Ale with a truly “unique flavor profile.” Maple Orange Imperial Caramel Cream Ale will be available on draft and in 12 oz. cans in the Due South Brewing Co. taproom and throughout the brewery’s distribution area in Florida.

dsmexicanstandoffFans of Due South Brewing should be stoked to hear that the elusive Mexican Standoff Porter is also making a return this month.  Weighing in at 8.5% ABV, this “incredibly complex Porter” is brewed with chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla bean, and chili peppers to create an experience that is “rich, spiced, and full of tingly heat.”  Mexican Standoff Porter is back as “a special limited batch” only available in the brewery’s taproom on draft and in crowlers to-go.

dscitrafiedFinally, Due South Brewing Co. is planning a progressive roll-out for the newest beer to be added to the brewery’s portfolio: Citrafied, “a Citra hop heavy American Pale Ale.”  At just 5.1% ABV, this quenching brew is “light, refreshing, and displays some amazing tropical fruit aromas.”  Citrafied is currently only available in the Due South Brewing Co. taproom, but hopheads can expect to see this one on shelves (12 oz. cans) and taps in Florida by the end of November.

Rogue Ales Releases Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerrilla Ale

unnamed-2Rogues Ales (Newport, Oregon) recently announced that they have once again collaborated with Voodoo Doughnut (Portland, Oregon) and are ready to introduce the craft beer community to  Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerrilla Ale.

The unmistakable pink-painted bottles are back, and Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerrilla Ale arrives as the sixth installment in this doughnut-inspired beer series.  For this release, the folks at Voodoo Doughnut and Rogue Ales decided to do a riff on the doughnut shop’s Grape Ape, “a raised yeast doughnut with vanilla frosting, grape dust and lavender sprinkles.”  The result is a 7.5% ABV Ale that is sure to be unlike any beer you have experienced before.

“Rogue approached us six years ago and wanted to make a beer that tasted like our doughnuts. After a lot of trial and error, we created Bacon Maple Ale and it’s been great ever since,” said Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson, co-founder of Voodoo Doughnut.

 

“The beer is fantastic. It’s got a great grape essence and doesn’t taste like cough syrup. It’s grape in a great way,” said Rogue President Brett Joyce.

Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerilla officially hits shelves in November and will be available in serigraphed pink-painted 750ml bottles.  Look for this one to show up at craft beer-friendly establishments in Alabama, Florida and throughout the full distribution area of Rogue Ales.  If you are a fan of wildly imaginative and extreme beers, this one should probably be on your radar this month.  Prost!

Dogfish Head Launches 60 Minute IPA in cans, Announces Return of Red & White

dfh60min2In a November already filled with good news from the brewery, two more exciting pieces of information have now been released by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery (Milton, Delaware):

  1. 12 oz. cans of 60 Minute IPA are beginning to hit shelves now.
  2. Red & White has officially returned for a limited time.

With the purchase of a state-of-the-art canning line from Krones, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery has now officially joined the canned craft beer movement and 60 Minute IPA will fittingly be the brewery’s first offering released in cans.  60 Minute IPA is a fan-favorite India Pale Ale that “is continuously hopped — more than 60 hop additions over a 60-minute boil.”  This beer’s popularity has played a huge role in Dogfish Head’s impressive growth over the years, so it only seems appropriate that 60 Minute IPA is given the honors to embark on the canning line’s maiden voyage.  On Monday, November 7, 12 oz. cans of 60 Minute IPA will head out into distribution “throughout the Mid-Atlantic, then into Dogfish’s full 30-state plus Washington D.C. distribution footprint in early 2017.”  Flesh & Blood IPA and SeaQuench Ale will then join the brewery’s year-round brand can lineup in early 2017 as well.

“Early on in the craft brewing renascence I was underwhelmed with the canning technology for craft beer,” said Dogfish Head founder and President Sam Calagione. “But times have changed, equipment has evolved, and we’ve designed a beautiful, state-of-the-art Krones can line that delivers the quality and consistency our consumers have come to expect from our beer.”

dfhredwhiteAs an added bonus, fans of Dogfish Head will be delighted to hear that Red & White is returning to shelves as a limited release from the brewery’s lineup of Occasional Rarities.  After attending a beer and wine dinner on the West Coast, Dogfish Head founder and President Sam Calagione was inspired to create Red & White as an offering that captures characteristics of both beer and wine.  The “White” portion of this offering refers to the lovely base of a Belgian-style Witbier brewed with coriander and orange peel. The juice of Pinot Noir grapes accounts for the “Red”, and then “a fraction of the batch is aged in one of [the brewery’s] 10,000-gallon oak tanks.”  Once completed, Red & White presents itself as a 10% ABV offering that “successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a red wine.”  This limited release offering is available now in 750ml bottles and can be found at select craft beer establishments within Dogfish Head’s distribution area.

Stone Brewing Hits November Hard with Bevy of Arrogant Brewing Releases

(Escondido, California) might be single-handedly declaring November the official month of arrogance with the release of seven (7!) beers from their Arrogant Brewing line: Double Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Bigger Longer Uncut, Lukcy Basartd Ale, Southern Charred, Double Bastard in the Rye, Crime and Punishment.

First up are three Special Release offerings from Arrogant Brewing, and we begin with Double Bastard Ale. This classic was first brewed in 1998 for the one year-anniversary of Arrogant Bastard Ale, and the aggressive nature of this amped-up American Strong Ale has been captivating and/or daunting craft beer fans ever since.  Double Bastard Bigger Longer Uncut arrives for the first time this year, and it is a “peatier, haughtier, boozier, doubler, more ‘er’ of everything” version of Double Bastard Ale thanks to being 100% aged in Islay Scotch Whisky barrels.  Finally, this barrage of Special Releases rounds off with Lukcy Basartd Ale.  Unlike the two previously mentioned beers, this excessively dry-hopped blend of Arrogant Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Ale and OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale will not benefit at all from aging.  Drink it fresh.  Drink it now.

  • Southern Charred – Continuing the Double Bastard theme by aging the offering for months in Kentucky Bourbon barrels, this treatment lends the brew “a well-rounded mixture” of caramel, molasses, hops, char and brown sugar.  The result: “A once-burly behemoth emerges as a stunningly graceful beast, with its bold, bullish roots lingering just under the surface.”
  • Double Bastard in the Rye – Where the barrel-aging of Southern Charred creates a smoother, more gentlemanly Bastard, the lengthy aging period in Templeton Rye Whisky barrels used in the creation of Double Bastard in the Rye allows the beer to achieve a new height of arrogance by upping the intensity level with “elevated spice and vanilla character.”
  • Crime – A blend of Arrogant Bastard Ale, Double Bastard Ale and OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels and then dosed with jalapeño, serrano, and other chile peppers.  “The result is something unsuitable for the faint of heart, mind or palate.”
  • Punishment – Disclaimer: “While chili pepper connoisseurs, daredevils and masochists proclaim it’s an enlightening experience, the average human (read: you) cries uncle at the first whiff.” Double Bastard Ale aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels acts as the base for Punishment, and then this brew is laced with a sinister amount of capsaicin by way of jalapeno, serrano, Fresno and other undisclosed peppers.  Only the “bold and the truly brave” should take on this brew.

Berry Monks arrives as a fruit-laced variant of Weyerbacher’s Merry Monks Belgian-style Tripel, a year-round offering from the brewery that boasts “a remarkable and complex flavor packed with notes of spice, banana and pear.”  To add a new twist on this old favorite, Berry Monks has been brewed with the additions of cranberries, orange peel and ginger.  This updated recipe yields a “9.3% ABV ale . . . ripe with apple and pear notes, which blend nicely with the tartness of the cranberries, the citrus twist of the orange peel and a touch of ginger.”

This limited release offering will officially launch on November 15th at The Tap Room at Weyerbacher Brewing.  Berry Monks will then head out to distribution in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft.  You can expect to find this one on shelves and taps at select craft beer establishments in Florida and throughout the brewery’s full distribution area (full list of states below).  Berry Monks Belgian-style Tripel will only be around for a limited time, so keep an eye out for this one in mid-November.  Prost!

For their take on a coffee beer, Harpoon Brewery has taken a much lighter approach than most by creating Winter Blonde Vanilla Cold Brew Ale as their newest Seasonal release in the UFO Series, a lineup of Seasonal and Year-round Un-Filtered Offerings. This hazy Blonde Ale might weigh in at an easy drinking 4.9% ABV, but it still manages to be packed with the comforting flavors and aromas of vanilla sweetness and robust cold brew coffee.
