Rogue Ales Releases Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerrilla Ale

unnamed-2Rogues Ales (Newport, Oregon) recently announced that they have once again collaborated with Voodoo Doughnut (Portland, Oregon) and are ready to introduce the craft beer community to  Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerrilla Ale.

The unmistakable pink-painted bottles are back, and Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerrilla Ale arrives as the sixth installment in this doughnut-inspired beer series.  For this release, the folks at Voodoo Doughnut and Rogue Ales decided to do a riff on the doughnut shop’s Grape Ape, “a raised yeast doughnut with vanilla frosting, grape dust and lavender sprinkles.”  The result is a 7.5% ABV Ale that is sure to be unlike any beer you have experienced before.

“Rogue approached us six years ago and wanted to make a beer that tasted like our doughnuts. After a lot of trial and error, we created Bacon Maple Ale and it’s been great ever since,” said Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson, co-founder of Voodoo Doughnut.

“The beer is fantastic. It’s got a great grape essence and doesn’t taste like cough syrup. It’s grape in a great way,” said Rogue President Brett Joyce.

Voodoo Doughnut Grape Guerilla officially hits shelves in November and will be available in serigraphed pink-painted 750ml bottles.  Look for this one to show up at craft beer-friendly establishments in Alabama, Florida and throughout the full distribution area of Rogue Ales.  If you are a fan of wildly imaginative and extreme beers, this one should probably be on your radar this month.  Prost!

Unibroue and Megadeth Brew Up À TOUT LE MONDE Saison Collaboration

web_355Unibroue (Chambly, Québec) recently announced that they have partnered with Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine to brew and release À TOUT LE MONDE Saison Ale.

Unibroue Brewmaster Jerry Vietz created À TOUT LE MONDE Saison Ale as a symbol of friendship and as a gift to recognize the 55th birthday of Dave Mustaine, lead vocalist and founder of the iconic Thrash Metal band Megadeth and lover of finely crafted beers.  Legends of their respective professions, these two men put their collective creativity to work and brewed a Belgian-style Golden Saison that was dry-hopped to produce hoppy, spicy notes.  The finished beer weighs in at an easy drinking 4.5% ABV to provide fans with “a clean, fresh taste and a crisp dry finish inviting you to take another sip.”

À TOUT LE MONDE – translating from French to mean “To All the World” or “To Everyone” – was named after the fourth track on Megadeth’s 1994 Youthanasia album.  The song proved to be one of the band’s “biggest hits in Quebec.”  The beer’s name also “recalls the consonance of Unibroue’s flagship beer, La Fin du Monde.”

“At Unibroue, we appreciate flavour – and we know Megadeth is anything but boring,” explains Jerry Vietz, Brewmaster at Unibroue. “To Megadeth’s delight and that of their fans and connoisseurs, we’re offering an uncompromising beer with rich hoppy aromas, created according to Dave’s personal tastes.”

“Our shared passion for excellence produced a one-of-a-kind saison beer,” added Dave Mustaine, Megadeth’s lead vocalist and founder. “I’m thrilled to present this new beer to my fans, and everyone who loves good beers with character.”

À TOUT LE MONDE Saison Ale is officially available now as Unibroue’s newest offering released in their Classics Series.  This offering can be found in 750 ml bottles in Quebec and in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles at fine craft beer retailers in Alabama, Florida and throughout Unibroue’s full 48 state distribution area.  I can say without hesitation that Unibroue makes nothing but amazing beer, so be sure to grab a 4-pack of À TOUT LE MONDE Saison Ale, crank up the stereo and allow your taste buds to rock out with this new offering.  Prost!

**Personal Note – This just might be the coolest craft beer news I have had the chance to cover over the last seven years.  I have been a huge Megadeth fan since my middle school years and I can often be found rockin’ to the band’s music while I work (As a matter of fact, “À Tout Le Monde”, “High Speed Dirt” & “Holy Wars” provided the soundtrack for this post).  I have long said that a bucket list item of mine has been to sit down with Dave Mustaine for a drink, but I can absolutely settle for the ability to now sip on a beer inspired by his work and created with his input.  Ok . . . that concludes my giddy, fan-boy moment.**

That’s right, the Ghost Train is finally ready to roll on its own and the next leg of this journey begins on October 22 at 2616 3rd Ave South, Birmingham.  If that address rings a bell to craft beer lovers in Central Alabama, that is because it formerly acted as the birthplace for Cahaba Brewing Company.  This facility is more than familiar territory and acts as a bit of a homecoming for Taylor DeBoer since he was a former partner at Cahaba and now the Founder/Owner of Ghost Train Brewing.  The address and building may be the same, but the soul and vibe of this new tasting room and brewery have been meticulously cultivated to represent the full Ghost Train aesthetic.

To properly introduce you to the Ghost Train experience, the folks at brewery welcome one and all to their Grand Opening Party on October 22.  Here are all the happenings, details and pertinent information you need to know concerning the event:

    3.  Dark Ride Belgian-style Strong Ale – “This one will take you for a ride! It’s a Belgian Style Strong Ale brewed with Alabama wildflower honey. Rogue Ales Sends Pumpkin Patch Ale Out to Distribution

pparoguebottleRogue Ales (Newport, Oregon) announced this week that they have officially released Pumpkin Patch Ale as a special fall offering.

For those of you who may be overwhelmed by the proliferation of pumpkin-themed everything turning up on stores shelves these days, take solace in knowing that Pumpkin Patch Ale is truly special because it was brewed with fresh pumpkins grown and harvested at Rogue Farms in Independence, Oregon.  This project started back in late spring when Dream Pumpkins were planted on one acre of the farm.  Once the gourds reached a “deep orange in color and their sweetness . . .peaked from the warm Oregon summer,” they were picked and immediately made the 77-mile trip to the brewery.  Upon arrival in Newport, “the pumpkins were hand-chopped and seeded, roasted in pizza ovens, and pitched fresh into the brew kettle along with vanilla bean, ginger, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, orange peel and Rogue Farms Independent hops to create Pumpkin Patch Ale.”

“It takes time to plant, grow, harvest, roast and brew with our own pumpkins, but real pumpkin beer is worth the wait,” said Rogue Brewmaster John Maier.

Pumpkin Patch Ale is available now on draft and in 750 ml bottles.  Pumpkin aficionados can track this one down by visiting their favorite craft beer-friendly retailer in Alabama, Florida, or any other state in Rogue Ale’s nationwide distribution footprint.  Prost!

Racer X DIPA Makes Seasonal Return for Bear Republic Brewing Co.

Created as the much bigger brother to the brewery’s flagship Racer 5 India Pale Ale, Racer X Double India Pale Ale is a true California take on English brewing traditions.  This offering boasts an “assertive hop aroma and bitterness” thanks to Cascade, Columbus, and Centennial hops utilized during both the kettle and dry-hop stages.  Although it may be a lupulin-laden experience, Racer X still retains a firm malt backbone to display “balance in a bottle.”  The final beer weighs in at 8.3% ABV and a whopping 100+ IBUs.

Tasting Notes: Tesla Hop-Charged Lager from Sixpoint Brewery

tesla-medallion-chyeaTasting Notes continues its examination of the recent boom of American-brewed Lagers by taking a look at Tesla Hop-Charged Lager from Sixpoint Brewery (Brooklyn, New York).

Tesla Hop-Charged Lager is the latest offering to come out of Sixpoint Brewery’s Cycliquids Series, a constantly rotating lineup of beers where brewers experiment with new styles and/or create new takes on past releases.  Tesla is an Imperial Lager boasting juicy notes supplied by “big doses of American hops” and a “clean snappiness of a cold-fermented, meticulously-lagered beer.”  The finished beer officially weighs in at 7.1% ABV and 49 IBUs.  Tesla is a limited release that is available now in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans.  Look for this brew on the shelves at your favorite craft beer retailer in Florida, Alabama and throughout Sixpoint’s distribution area.  Now to the fun part.  Let’s get our sip on and scribble down some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Tesla Hop-Charged Lager from Sixpoint Brewery

Appearance: Tesla pours up a deep, rich gold color that tapers from light oranges to electric yellows from the top of the body down.  When held to direct light, the yellows build with intensity to brighten the beer’s golden hue.  The body is clear and displays a very lively carbonation level.  The carb bubbles slingshot up to feed two fingers of pristine, white foam built off the gentle pour.  The beer proudly presents the signature head retention of a fine Lager.  The head eventually falls to a lasting finger that diligently notches the glass after each and every pull.

Aroma: Living up to its name, hops fuel this Lager with incredibly clean citrus, tropical and floral notes.  Mango, pineapple and tangerine embrace a sweet floral character that is almost nectar-like.  Although pronounced, the hops are not overly aggressive in the aromatic profile.  This allows pops of bready malt and Lager yeast to surface from time to time.  Lovely and beautifully presented here.

Taste: The hops absolutely spearhead the charge as the beer hits the palate.  That said, they are not nearly as bellicose as I may have initially – and unfairly – feared.  Grapefruit zest, orange and lime are all accounted for to provide those juicy and refreshing citrus hop qualities.  A touch of pine and grassy tones then add an earthy hoppiness and dankness.  The hops wrap up with booze-soaked tropical notes of pineapple and mango.  These hop notes may account for the majority of the experience, but they are by no means over the top or at the level of stripping the enamel off of your teeth.  A Zen-like balance tempers those hops with lightly sweet malt notes of bread and cracker.  American hopped?  Affimative.  Trademark Lager balance?  Achieved.

Mouthfeel: This Lager is medium in body with a medium carbonation level to it.  Bitter on the palate with just a tinge of sweetness weaving in to dexterously counter.  Alcohol certainly has some size to it at 7.1% ABV, and that does present itself with a gentle heat on the throat and in the belly.  The beer dries out as much as it can, but a bit of hoppiness stubbornly lingers.  Aftertaste is all grapefruit zest.

Final Thoughts: Sure, I will admit the tagline of “Hop-Charged” may have had me a bit worried that this offering may hide its Lager qualities behind an overly hopped experience.  I am elated to say that my worries were unnecessary and unfounded.  Tesla is most assuredly hop-forward, delivering a bitterness that is on point and showcasing beautifully clean flavors and aromatics.  That being the case, the beer does not forget that it is indeed a Lager and it retains a level of crispness thanks to a seemingly remarkably achieved balance.  My only gripe is the elevated ABV level that may shift this beer from the daily drinker category to more of a sip and savor brew.  All in all, Tesla is wonderfully put together with just enough of Sixpoint’s “Mad Science” personality provided to keep the beer unique and fun to drink.  Prost!

Ballast Point Brewing Releases Cinnamon Raisin Commodore Stout

cinnraisincommodoreglassBallast Point Brewing (San Diego, California) recently informed their fans on social media that Cinnamon Raisin Commodore American Stout is now available as a new limited release offering.

We started the week with an introduction to an interesting new variant being released by Ballast Point Brewing, and it looks like we will be closing it out with news of another.  Commodore American Stout is the latest year-round beer to get the variant treatment with this version incorporating the additions of cinnamon and raisins to give the beer a kick of dessert-inspired spice.  Commodore Stout got its start in the brewery’s R&D program, and became a surprise, gold-medal winning hit.  In similar fashion, Cinnamon Raisin Commodore came to be as one-off kegs featured exclusively at the brewery’s tasting rooms.  Its dark, bittersweet and roasty malt character supported by “just the right amount of sweet and spice” proved to be another home run with fans, and that made it an easy decision to turn it into Ballast Point’s latest 6-pack.

Cinnamon Raisin Commodore American Stout is a limited release currently only available on draft and in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles at the Ballast Point tasting rooms in the San Diego area.  Although the brewery has not announced plans for wider distribution, it is always possible that a few kegs or cases of this brew could maybe turn up at special events held in the near future within Ballast Point’s distribution area.  Keep your eyes open, remain vigilant, and maybe . . . just maybe . . . we will luck out and get a taste on the East Coast.  Prost!
