Tasting Notes: Born Again Yesterday Unfiltered Ale from Lagunitas Brewing Company

LagunitasBAYpourx1000For this edition of Tasting Notes, the wacky alchemists at Lagunitas Brewing Company (Petaluma, California) magically transport us back to wet hop season with a pour of their Born Again Yesterday Unfiltered Ale.

Wet hop season typically starts in late August and lasts for about a month or so each year. During this time, many brewers usually take this opportunity to make a special beer with fresh hops that are picked and in the brew kettle within a 24-hour window.  They get one shot at this a year and then – because hops are easily susceptible to mold and spoilage – the rest of the harvest is quickly dried for year-round use. Even though the folks that process hops are masters of this delicate craft, many brewers are left feeling that “something is always lost in translation.”

Very fond of that je ne sais quoi that wet hops possess, the brewers at Lagunitas decided that they were going to find a way to take the wet hop experience year-round.  To do this, they took the book that taught them everything that they already knew about hops, threw it out the window, and went all trial and error to devise a new process for hop preservation.  After “5 or 6” botched attempts, they finally discovered “a relatively simple process” that just forced them to “[think] about hops and freshness in new ways.” Now armed with this proprietary, “homegrown process of time dilation for the delicate hop cone that the flower doesn’t even perceive”, Lagunitas can now offer Born Again Yesterday Unfiltered Ale (7% ABV) as a true wet hop experience six months removed from harvest season.

Born Again Yesterday Unfiltered Ale is available now for a limited time in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft.  You can expect to find this Limited Release at select craft beer establishments located in Alabama, Florida, California, Illinois and throughout the rest of Lagunitas Brewing Company’s vast distribution area.

Alright . . . now that we are all caught up on that lengthy backstory, let’s get into these Tasting Notes to see exactly what a preserved wet hop beer can offer to a self-proclaimed hophead.

Tasting Notes for Born Again Yesterday Unfiltered Ale from Lagunitas Brewing Company

Appearance: Born Again Yesterday pours up as a deep golden colored brew that is wearing a perfect finger of pure white foam. When exposed to direct light, the color shifts a bit to take on some vibrant orange tones.  The beer has a light haze/cloudiness to it, but an abundant carbonation presence can still be seen kicking around a serious amount of floaties suspended in the liquid.  Head retention is good, falling oh so slowly to a lasting and incredibly creamy top cap that leaves wide sheets of lace behind after each sip.

Aroma: Big on the citrus, the aromatics lead with pronounced notes of sweet orange and mandarin.  Lime and grapefruit zest then move in to brighten the lightly sweet malts running parallel. The profile closes beautifully with that signature earthy grassiness that is so often found in wet hop beers. These aromas may seem simple, but they are enormous.

Taste:  Citrus leads here as well, but this time around it serves as more of a role player.  Orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit offer a bright initial pop before the hops take a dynamic turn toward more earthy and grassy qualities.  The profile then takes on a lightly herbaceous and piney quality that eventually fades out to leave behind a finish filled with clean, non-obtrusive malt character.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with a medium carbonation level, this beer has a good weight to it and fully coats the palate with each sip.  The hops do bring some bite, but the balance is dialed in so that the bitterness is not all-consuming. Despite its palate engulfing nature, the beer still finds a way to dry out quickly and clean up nicely. The 7% ABV is well-behaved, but it does draw some attention to itself as the beer warms.  The aftertaste is all clean malt with a dash of grapefruit zest.

Final Thoughts: Whatever the process is that Lagunitas devised to preserve wet hops, it works.  When I approach wet hop beers, I tend to look for two things:

  1. Big ol’ gains in the department of hop aroma
  2. A very distinguishable grassy and “green” flavor

Born Again Yesterday Unfiltered Ale easily checks both those boxes, and then goes on to turn it up a notch by having a bigger hop flavor than most wet hop beers.  Just as you would expect from a hop-forward beer from Lagunitas, the citrus hop notes are absolutely massive and work beautifully with that wet hop grassy character to supply the drinker with a memorable and dank Pale Ale.  Wet hops at the end of spring? Yeah, you best believe that they live on in Born Again Yesterday Unfiltered Ale.  If you are a lover of hops, be sure to get your hands on this tasty beverage before its Limited Release runs its course.  Prost!

Goodwood Brewing Co. Expands Distribution to Florida

Goodwood_BrewingCo_Logo_BLK.pngGoodwood Brewing Co. (Louisville, Kentucky) has officially announced that it has partnered with Republic National Distributing Company so that it can begin statewide distribution in Florida.

Established by “some of Louisville’s longest-serving brewing veterans”, Goodwood Brewing Co. is an independent regional craft brewery “dedicated to making beers that have been touched by wood; whether in reclaimed oak casks once used to house bourbon, red wine, tequila, rum and brandy or seasoned on oak, hemp, poplar or ash.”  With styles ranging from “freshly nuanced stouts” and other ales to refreshing lagers, the brewery’s unique “shade-grown beers” are all brewed with limestone water – just like the bourbon Kentucky is famous for.  Because of the brewery’s “ties to bourbon culture and southern tradition” and its portfolio’s dynamic range in flavors, Goodwood Brewing Co. has been warmly embraced by beer lovers as its distribution area has steadily grown across the South.  Hoping that this trend continues, the folks at the brewery feel that now is the time to introduce themselves to the Sunshine State.

“We are extremely excited to launch the Florida with Republic National. Florida is a wonderful mix of local residents, transplants and vacationers and has a thriving craft beer scene. Our portfolio spectrum will appeal to all segments, ranging from session beach and boat beers to high gravity brews for the serious craft beer lover. Republic’s merger with Breakthru makes them an ideal partner as we are with Breakthru in a number of other states.”

– Ted Mitzlaff, CEO of Goodwood Brewing Co.

Goodwood Brewing Co. will launch distribution in Florida with the following eight offerings:

  • Bourbon Barrel Stout – Goodwood Bourbon Barrel Stout is an homage to Kentucky’s proud distilling legacy – brewed with the same limestone water as its namesake whiskey and patiently seasoned in bourbon barrels. This silky American stout has notes of oak, dark roasted malts and, of course, bourbon. Roasted barley produces chocolate and coffee flavors with a lasting vanilla finish.  Available in 12 oz. bottles. (8% ABV, 33 IBUs)
  • Brandy Barrel Honey Ale – Goodwood uses casks from some brandy distilling friends to patiently age our Honey Ale – super freaking patiently, actually. Goodwood Brandy Barrel Honey Ale is brewed with locally sourced honey and aged several times longer than our other barreled beers. But you don’t have to wait another second. Go ahead. Skip the part about “notes of malt, mead and dried fruit,” and get to sippin’!  Available in 12 oz. bottles and on draught.  (8.7% ABV, 33 IBUs)
  • Bourbon Barrel Ale – Goodwood Bourbon Barrel Ale is refined by its time in the cask, not defined by it. The process produces balanced, adjunct-free ale with delicious bourbon notes. This copper-toned beaut is medium-bodied and malt-forward with a hint of sweet caramel. It finishes strong and dry with notes of vanilla and bourbon-soaked oak.  Available in 12 oz. bottles.  (6% ABV, 33 IBUs)
  • Louisville Lager – Goodwood Louisville Lager is the first and only beer brewed with 100% Kentucky-grown grains. And, in a tip of the cap to our Slugger-making neighbors downtown, white ash – common in baseball bats – is used to enhance brewing. This results in a light-bodied, perfectly balanced lager with a sweet finish delivered by those Kentucky grains. Available in 12 oz. cans. (4.2% ABV, 23 IBUs)
  • Walnut Brown AleYou’ll go totally walnuts over this oak-aged, walnut-seasoned brown ale. Made with a brewing style that dates back to 16th-century England and using a blend of six choice malts and two English hops, Goodwood Walnut Brown Ale features notes of caramel and chocolate with a finish that is – you guessed it – pleasingly nutty.  Available in 12 oz. cans and on draught.  (6% ABV, 31 IBUs)
  • Hemp Gose – Slightly salty, nice and tart, with a dash of dank— this shrub-touched Gose is unlike any other you’ve had before! Our interpretation of this German-style sour beer is crisp, light and refreshing. The malt body compliments the tartness of the brew and the hemp adds a light herbal aroma and a slight funk on the finish! Available in 12 oz. cans.  (5.12% ABV, 7 IBUs)
  • Spruce Tip IPA – This spruce-tip infused IPA is packed with crisp hops and piney flavor throughout. The recipe includes one of the best base malts grown and malted in North America, Cargill’s Special Pale. Then it’s topped off with spruce tips from the Great Pacific Northwest, along with Zeus, Centennial, El Dorado, Comet, and Simcoe hops.  Available in 12 oz. cans and on draught. (5.5% ABV, 61 IBUs)
  • American Pale Ale – Goodwood’s American Pale Ale is aged on poplar and brewed with several American hop varieties. The 5.7 ABV brew features a hoppy, floral bouquet, that finishes perfectly with a pleasingly sweet, malty backbone. The packaging will honor fallen American Heroes. In addition to bearing the name of a fallen hero on their American Pale Ale cans, Goodwood Brewing will also host fundraisers and donate to their partnering foundations throughout the year.  Available in 12 oz. cans. (5.7% ABV, 51 IBUs)

With Republic National Distributing Company handling all distribution responsibilities, Goodwood Brewing Co. will soon be available across the state of the Florida.  Both companies are in the process of planning a series of launch events at local Florida establishments, and we will update you with that information just as soon as it becomes available.  Stay tuned.  Prost!

One of only 11 Trappist breweries in the world, Brouwerij De Kievit is located “in the quiet countryside outside the village of Zundert, near the Belgian border”, at Abbey Maria Toevlucht, Netherlands.  After visiting several Trappist breweries in 2011, the monks at the abbey decided to establish Brouwerij De Kievit, “developed a beer to their taste” and started selling Zundert Trappist 8 Ale in the Netherlands and Belgium in 2013. John Reeves Incident Label PhotoBeginning at noon on Sunday, May 27, Marker 48 Brewing (Weeki Wachee, Florida) will add some local lore to its Memorial Day Weekend festivities by hosting the brewery’s 2nd Annual The John Reeves Incident Bottle Release and UFO Celebration.

The Story

“John Reeves lived in the Brooksville area of Florida and, like many of us, enjoyed traipsing around in the beautiful woodlands of The Nature Coast. Then one day, in 1961, he came upon a saucer-shaped craft parked in the wilderness, with tall, luminous beings near it.

Those beings, it turns out, arrived from the stars, and over the next few years John Reeves befriended them. In fact, in 1968, his alien friends flew him to their base on the far side of our moon, where he spent hours exploring before returning with a small bottle of gray lunar dust and a softball-sized chunk of rock. In doing so, he became the first man to walk on the moon’s surface — a year before Neil Armstrong did it.

Or so the story goes.”
