Austin’s Celis Brewery Plans Grand Opening, Launches with Three Year-Round Beers

Celis Pale Bock 2017On Tuesday, July 11, Celis Brewery (10001 Metric Blvd., Austin, Texas) – Austin’s original craft brewery – will officially return to the craft beer scene with a Grand Opening event that will showcase the brewery’s new facility and three Year-Round offerings.

Celis Brewery was originally founded in 1992 by famed Belgian brewer Pierre Celis and “gained national and international notoriety with its Celis White, a Belgian witbier that . . . Celis championed in his hometown of Hoegaarden, Belgium.”  This popularity led to rapid growth that eventually caught the eye of Miller Brewing Company.  The brewing giant ended up purchasing Celis Brewery, and the brewery eventually closed its doors in 2001.

Fast-forward to 2017 and things are looking up for the legendary Celis Brewery once again.   Christine Celis, Pierre’s daughter and partner in the original brewery, has painstakingly rebuilt Celis Brewery to reestablish her family’s brewing legacy, and the time to officially reopen has finally arrived.

“Austin has its first craft brewery back,” says Ms. Celis, founder and CEO of Celis Brewery. “It has been a labor of love to reopen Celis Brewery, and it is incredibly exciting to be back brewing my father’s original recipes like the famous Celis Wit and Celis Grand Cru using the proprietary yeast from Belgium. We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and enthusiasm we have found in Austin as we have started reintroducing our Celis beers around town in a series of tastings this month. We are thrilled to celebrate our return with a Grand Opening party on the 25th anniversary of the first grand opening. We are giving Austin a part of its history back.”

On July 11, the public will have its “first opportunity to tour the 22,000-square-foot brewery . . . that has the capacity to brew more than 50,000 barrels per year.”  Highlights from the tour will include the brewery’s “technologically advanced 50 HL BrauKon brew system, some of the original equipment from Belgium, and the new brewery’s taproom with its majestic centerpiece: the original Celis Brewery’s massive hand-beaten copper kettle from the early 1900s which has been converted into a beautiful bar.”  Showing off their state-of-the-art equipment will be fun, but the brewing team at Celis Brewery is most looking forward to using the Grand Opening event as an opportunity to convey their dedication to “the same stringent consistency and quality protocols that propelled the original brewery to prominence.”

True evidence of this dedication can only be found in the beer, and Celis Brewery will launch with the following three Year-Round offerings:

  • Celis White“The legendary “Father of Witbier” first brewed by Pierre Celis in 1965 is back. The signature witbier is made with the original Celis recipe including Cascade, Saaz and Willamette hops, coriander and orange peel, as well as the proprietary yeast strain from Belgium. This traditional witbier is hazy bright yellow with strong citrus with spicy fruity scents. Celis White sparkles slightly tart fruit flavors balanced with light maltiness and wheat. It finishes with complex citrus and spice for a refreshing taste that is perfect on a warm Texas afternoon.”
  • Celis Pale Bock“Christine Celis has revived her father’s Belgian Pale Bock recipe with the same amber color and lingering warm rich flavors as the original. It’s brewed with caramel malts, and Saaz, Willamette and Cascade hops, giving it a deep copper and a creamy Belgian-white head. The Pale Bock has dry berry with caramel-malt and citrus aromas, and delicious flavors of subdued berry, malt, a touch of citrus, hints of herbs and spices, and a touch of bitterness at the finish. This easy drinking, full-flavored beer is sure to inspire engaging conversations with friends.”
  • Celis Citrus Grandis IPA“Celis Brewery’s first new recipe is an East Coast style IPA made with the finest Azacca and Citra hops. This zesty Caribbean-inspired brew mingles juicy citrus and tropical fruit aromatics in its hazy golden depths. The IPA pours hazy pale orange with frothy, paper-white head. The effortlessly drinkable beer has bold flavors of grapefruit, orange rind and melons followed by light peach, passionfruit and pineapple notes. It finishes with lingering piney, hop bitterness that begs for a second sip.”

The three beers above will be pouring at the Grand Opening event, and they are also available “on tap at more than 100 bars and restaurants in central Texas.”  Celis Brewery plans to systematically roll out distribution with expansion “to Dallas Fort Worth in July, and San Antonio and Hill Country in August.” Bottles are expected to be available by August 2017, and the brewery plans to introduce more beers in fall as well – this includes the lauded Celis Grand Cru mentioned above.

With all the negativity recently raised in the beer community due to buyouts, it is more than refreshing to see a brewery comeback from such a situation.  If you are in the Austin area, this truly is an occasion that needs to be celebrated and recognized.  Whether you wait until the Grand Opening on July 11 or track them down early at a local pub, just be sure to raise a glass to Celis Brewery and welcome them back to the amazing craft beer scene it once had a hand in establishing.  Prost!

Forbidden Root Brewery to Launch Its Fernet-Inspired Fernetic in Florida

Ferneticbottle_editedForbidden Root Brewery (Chicago, Illinois) recently announced that it will introduce the Florida craft beer community to Fernetic Imperial Black Ale, a limited release collaboration with Fratelli Branca Distillerie (Milan, Italy), beginning in late-June.

To properly represent Fernet-Branca in “its first foray into craft beer”, the brewers at Forbidden Root teamed up with the Branca family to “[deconstruct] the beloved Italian digestif and [reconstruct] the legendary family recipe into an unforgettable craft beer for Amaro and beer lovers alike.”  Their collaborative efforts resulted in Fernetic, “an exotic, spicy and complex” Imperial Black Ale made with a recipe boasting “quality ingredients such as rhubarb root, saffron, and wormwood, among the selected botanics of the 27 herbs and spices found in Fernet-Branca.” With an aromatic profile hinting at notes of coffee and peppermint, the 8.4% ABV Fernetic supplies a drinking experience possessing “a soft roastiness . . ., bitter notes [that] build to a spicy, creamy middle and dry woody finish.”

“Collaborations are always an opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and build off someone else’s creative energy,” says Forbidden Root head brewer BJ Pichman. “With Fernet-Branca, we were working with a nearly 175 year-old recipe, a body of very distinct flavors and a bitterness factor that is not usually present in beers. Our team really enjoyed the creative challenge of working to make a delicious, uncommon beer while keeping true to the flavors and history of the Fernet-Branca recipe.”

Fernetic Imperial Black Ale will officially release in Florida in late-June at the following launch events:

  • Wednesday, June 21 at 3 p.m. at Ice Plant Bar (110 Riberia Street, St. Augustine, FL) – “A cocktail competition will run from 3-5 p.m. preceding the 5 p.m. Fernetic tapping. The event will give attendees an opportunity to taste the unique collaboration brew, meet Fernet-Branca and Forbidden Root representatives, and enjoy Fernet-inspired cocktails.”
  • Thursday, June 22 at 7 p.m. at SweetWater Bar & Grill (1507 S Federal Highway, Boynton Beach, FL) – A special tapping of Fernetic that will feature a cocktail competition at 10 p.m.
  • Friday, June 23 at 6 p.m. at The Blue Goose (48 9th St N, Saint Petersburg, FL) – Launch event with a Fernetic tapping at 8 p.m.

To the delight of Alabama’s craft beer community, Brewfest Season is officially back in the Yellowhammer State and the time for Magic City Brewfest draws near. As a craft beer consumer advocacy organization, our mission is to work within our communities to educate the public, support the industry at large, and remain vigilant watch dogs on legislative processes. Started in 2004 by Alabamians with no ties to any alcoholic beverage business, Free The Hops was incorporated later that year and registered as an official 501(c)(6) non-profit in 2007. None of our members make any money off the grassroots effort.”

A New Focus

“This year, Free the Hops has overhauled their mission to focus more on education. We will be sharing a wealth of fun and useful knowledge, from an introduction to homebrewing and common off flavors in beer, to tips on pairing beer with food and maximizing your time at the festival. Schlafly Beer to Pair Solar Eclipse with Path of Totality Pack

SchlaflylogoSchlafly Beer (St. Louis, Missouri) has announced plans to commemorate this summer’s solar eclipse with the release of the special edition Path of Totality pack of its Helles-style Lager in June.

As self-proclaimed “science nerds”, the crew at Schlafly Beer is preparing for this summer’s total eclipse – Monday, August 21 – by putting together the Path of Totality pack, a limited-edition packaging of their Helles-style Lager named after the path that experiences complete darkness during an eclipse.  Wrapped in black and metallic silver labels, these 6 and 12-packs of 12 oz. bottles will also include a pair of solar glasses so eclipse gazers can “watch the phenomenon safely.”

“St. Louis is along the Path of Totality, the path of the eclipse that will experience total darkness. As science nerds at Schlafly, we are very excited for this, along with the rest of the city, so we wanted to do something fun to celebrate. The last total eclipse seen in St. Louis was almost 550 years before anyone had tried a Schlafly beer back in 1442,” says Founding Brewer Stephen Hale.

As for the beer itself, Schlafly’s Helles-style Lager is “a bright, golden beer . . . reminiscent of European lagers.”  The beer begins with a backbone of “fresh grain character” that is balanced by the “mild lemony, spicy flavor” of German Mittelfrüh hops.  Weighing in at just 4.5% ABV and 17 IBUs, Helles-style Lager proves itself to be a perfect option for summertime drinking.

The Path of Totality pack will release in June and be available all summer long in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles for the suggested retail price of $7.99 and in 12-packs of 12 oz. bottles for the suggested retail price of $13.99.  You can expect to find these limited-edition packs at craft beer retailers located in Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and throughout the rest of Schlafly Beer’s distribution footprint.

If you happen to live in the St. Louis area, Schlafly Beer is also planning an Eclipse Field Trip party on eclipse day itself on Monday, August 21.  This event will take place at the Dew Drop Inn (Bloomsdale, Missouri) and include the following:

  • Bus transportation to and from the Dew Drop Inn
  • Beer on the bus and at the event
  • BBQ lunch
  • Lawn games
  • Live music

Tickets to this event are $45 each and will be available for purchase beginning on July 1.  You can click here for more information concerning this event and to purchase tickets once they are released.  Tickets are incredibly limited.

Field Trip: Cavalier Distributing Trade Show – Tampa

Just a few weeks ago, Cavalier Distributing (Lakeland, Florida) held a fantastic and informative trade show at The Vault, a beautiful venue located in the heart of Tampa’s Downtown Arts District.  Cavalier used this industry-only event as an opportunity to introduce the area’s restaurants, bars, retailers, and media members to their vast portfolio of fine craft beers, meads, ciders and spirits.  The best way to capture all that this event had to offer was through a visual medium, so check out the photos below (click to enlarge) so that you too can get the inside scoop on the exciting beverages headed our way this year from Cavalier Distributing.  Prost!
