Iron Fist Brewing Slips Into August with Limited Release of Night Creep Black DIPA

Night_Creep_Press_Can_01Iron Fist Brewing Company (Vista, California) has officially announced that Night Creep Black DIPA will release on August 9 as the 7th installment in the brewery’s Small Batch Experiments Series.

Carefully crafted to set itself apart from the three IPAs already in Iron Fist’s Core lineup as well as in the always IPA-saturated beer scene in the San Diego area, Night Creep is a “dark and different” Black Double India Pale Ale that utilizes an “unusual” yeast strain that “[brings] a distinctive flavor to a DIPA.”  To round off the recipe, the brewing team at Iron Fist used “choice kiln roasted malt [to impart] not only blackness but a mild toast undertone” while a “blend of earthy dank hops and overtones of citrus, floral and pine hops” provide balance. Night Creep comes in at a sneaky 8.5% ABV and 70 IBUs.

“Many DIPA’s have a very perceivable high ABV, so the alcohol comes in quite hot. With Night Creep we set out to create a DIPA that is full bodied, drinkable, that pushes the boundaries of the style without crossing into Stout territory.”

– Tom Garcia, Iron Fist Brewmaster

Night Creep will officially debut on Friday, August 9 in Iron Fist Brewing Company’s Vista and Barrio Logan taprooms.  This Limited Release offering will be available in limited-edition 12 oz. cans and on draft. Jester King Brewery Introduces Pattinson Porter

JesterkinglogoJester King Brewery (Austin, Texas) has officially announced that it will begin the Limited Release of Pattinson Porter, a special collaboration with beer historian and writer Ron Pattinson, on August 8.

Brewed in March when Ron Pattinson visited Jester King for a speaking engagement, Pattinson Porter is a take on “a rare historical recipe for an East German Porter from the early to mid 20th century” that Pattinson brought along for the event.  This particular style of Porter was known for being “heavily toasted, highly hopped, and brettanomyces refermented.” Jester King put their twist on this beer by pitching it with their “mixed culture which contains several strains of brettanomyces rather than refermenting with brettanomyces.”  Pattinson Porter comes in at 8.4% ABV.

“Working with Ron Pattinson was a real honor for us at Jester King. He’s someone we’ve looked up to for years and learned a lot about beer from. History can easily be lost forever, so we’re grateful for Ron’s effort to preserve it when it comes to beer. Ron is also one of the most entertaining and engaging people we know in the beer world, so it was a real pleasure to host him at Jester King, brew with him, and have him lecture on the history of sour beer in Germany.”

– Jeffrey Stuffings, Co-founder of Jester King Brewery

Pattinson Porter will make its debut at 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 8 at the Tasting Room & Kitchen at Jester King Brewery and distribution is anticipated to follow shortly after the on-site release.  You can expect to find this Limited Release offering available in 750ml bottles at select craft beer-focused establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Texas and throughout the rest of Jester King’s distribution footprint. Motorworks Brewing Sets Release Date for Therianthropy American Wild Ale

motorworkslogoMotorworks Brewing (Bradenton, Florida) has officially announced that it will begin the Limited Bottle Release for Therianthropy American Wild Ale on Wednesday, August 7.

Born purely out of curiosity, Therianthropy came about when the brewers at Motorworks wanted to see how the souring bacteria from La Couronne Sauvage – the brewery’s “first foray into the world of mixed culture beer” – . . . would assert itself in a small batch of Scottish Ale (the base beer for [the brewery’s] Lavender Ale that was yet to be dosed).” After inoculation and aging for several months, the beer emerged from its barrels boasting “tart, fruity flavors evocative of dried stone fruit that wonderfully complement its smooth, sweet malt base, building a flavor profile not unlike a Flanders Red Ale.”

Therianthropy will debut in Motorworks Brewing’s Taproom (1014 9th Street West | Bradenton, Florida) on August 7 and will stick around only as long as supplies last. This Limited Release offering will be available in 750ml bottles for the price of $18 each. Therianthropy is a Taproom exclusive release that will not see distribution.  Prost!

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Revives Oktoberfest Wedding Tradition with Vow & Braus Giveaway

sierranevadabanner.jpgSierra Nevada Brewing Co. (Chico, California) has officially announced that it is actively taking submissions for Vows and Braus: Craft Beer’s Royal Wedding, a promotion that will give one lucky couple the opportunity to get married in front of thousands of guests at the brewery’s 2019 Oktoberfest celebration on September 27 in Chico, California.

It is safe to assume that the majority of beer lovers are familiar with Oktoberfest, but many may not be aware that the original Oktoberfest was thrown in 1810 to celebrate the royal wedding between Bavaria’s Crown Prince Ludwig – who went on to become King Ludwig I – and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The event was such a blast that it returned each year and eventually became the beer-filled holiday that we all know and love today.

Now in 2019, Sierra Nevada is looking to put the wedding tradition back in Oktoberfest with Vows and Braus: Craft Beer’s Royal Wedding.  To pull this off, Sierra Nevada is holding a contest to track down an engaged couple – comprised of two not-so-common commoners who love beer as much as they love each other – that is willing to help the brewery kick off this year’s Oktoberfest with the “biggest, loudest, most over-the-top wedding in centuries.” Sierra Nevada will handle all the planning. The winning couple just has to show up in Chico, tie the knot on September 27, and enjoy the party.

Interested in entering the Vows and Braus giveaway? Here are all the entry requirements and contest details:

The winning couple will be treated to the following prize package:

  • Two round trip plane tickets to Chico, California
  • Transportation from the airport
  • A honeymoon suite before and after the wedding
  • 50 tickets for family and friends to attend Sierra Nevada’s 2019 Oktoberfest Royal Wedding (21+)
  • VIP access to Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest offerings
  • An unforgettable wedding ceremony onstage during Oktoberfest
  • Dinner, drinks, flowers and decorations, wedding cake, live music and entertainment
  • Photos capturing your memorable event

If you are at all interested in having your wedding be the most memorable one of the year, you need to get your fiancé on board (this should be an easy sell), film your Vows and Braus submission video ASAP, and get it uploaded by August 8. Good luck to all you crazy kids.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Tropic of Thunder Lager from Stone Brewing

StoneTropicPourFor this installment of Tasting Notes, we seek refuge from the unrelenting summer heat in a tall pour of Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager from Stone Brewing (Escondido, California).

Created to serve as the “perfect island companion to [Stone Brewing’s] tropically-inspired, fruit forward lineup of IPAs”, Stone Tropic of Thunder is a refreshing “Tropical Lager” that possesses “aromas of citrus, pineapple and coconut . . . followed by flavors of lime, orange and passion fruit.”  This sensory experience is framed beautifully by “a newer hop variety – Cashmere – [which] . . . imparts flavors of ripe cantaloupe that elevate the juicy qualities of this beer.”  Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager clocks in at 5.8% ABV and 58 IBUs.

Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager originally debuted in California near the end of 2018 and is now officially available across the country.  You can expect to find this new Year-Round offering available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans, 19.2 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida, California, Virginia and throughout the rest of Stone Brewing’s nationwide distribution territory.

Alright . . . now that we have properly covered all the information behind Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager, let’s get into these Tasting Notes and see what this Tropical Lager is all about!

Tasting Notes for Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager from Stone Brewing

Appearance: A careful pour from a 19.2 oz. can produces a lager that is straw yellow in color and topped with over two fingers of pillowy, bright white foam.  When held to direct light, the yellows grow a bit more vibrant as they take on soft golden tones.  The beer is perfectly clear and shows off the lively carbonation presence coursing within.  Head retention is good, falling slowly to a thin but complete top cap that leaves a perfect notch of lace on the glass after each sip.

Aroma:  The aromatics open with a delightful trio of tropical notes: sweet melon, pineapple and mango.  A burst of citrus – grapefruit, orange and lemon – lends support and draws even more attention to those tropical notes. The grains round everything off with a gently sweet crackery quality. Very subtle here, but still refined and quite tempting.

Taste:  To firmly assert that this is indeed a lager, the grains take point here with a clean biscuity malt presence. The malt sweetness ultimately gives way to a beautifully delicate, juicy hop character filled with notes of cantaloupe, passion fruit, tangerine, pineapple, dragon fruit, and lime zest.  The profile closes with just a hint of herb and a lingering grace of crisp white wine.

Mouthfeel:  On the light side of medium in body with a bright carbonation level, this lager is incredibly easy-drinking and finishes nice and dry.  The beer further increases its overall level of drinkability by finding a gorgeous balance between its biscuity malt sweetness and fruity hop bite.  We had a difficult time believing that this beer clocks in at 5.8% ABV because there is not even a hint of alcohol to be found. The aftertaste leaves behind a wonderful combination of white wine and passion fruit.

Final Thoughts:  Just as any good lager should be, Stone Tropic of Thunder is ridiculously drinkable and flavorful. The true beauty of this beer lies in its balance. Sure, the hops dominate the flavor and aroma, but the not at all shy malt character takes the edge off the hop bitterness and makes damn sure that its presence is known.

Above all, this beer does everything it can to emphasize that it is definitely not just another lager pretending to be an IPA. No . . . Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager is more of a nod to those classic, hop-forward European lagers that have been around forever, but this one just uses fruitier new school hops rather than Noble hops.  It is clearly a beer that has learned plenty from the past but has also picked up a few new tricks along the way.

If you have love for the lager in your heart and are on the hunt for something crispy and new, Stone Tropic of Thunder Lager absolutely deserves a place in your fridge or cooler this summer.  Be sure to keep an eye out for this one the next time you hit your favorite craft beer store or bar.  Prost!
