Maple Barrel-aged Black Aggie Headlines Next Mega Drop at Hidden Springs Ale Works

HiddenSpringsShunOn Saturday, September 1 at 11 a.m., Hidden Springs Ale Works (Tampa, Florida) will host a Mega Drop release event featuring bottles of Maple Barrel Aged Black Aggie Imperial Stout and four other limited-release offerings in cans.

That’s right . . . Black Aggie is back and this time she is bringing some sticky maple barrel-aged Imperial Stout action to Hidden Springs Ale Works’ latest Mega Drop, the brewery’s all-in approach to beer releases that has its fans leaving the facility with an armful of instant gratification.  Obviously, to make this a true Mega Drop, Maple Barrel Aged Black Aggie will be joined by four other “frands” in cans (pictured on the right).  The descriptions and pricing for all five Mega Drop beers are as follows:

  • Maple Barrel Aged Black Aggie | $30 per bottle – The name of this massive Imperial Stout says it all.  ABV – 13%
  • Shun the Non-Believer | $18 per 4-pack of 16 oz. cans – Berliner with Mango and Habanero. It’s spicy. It’s tart. It’s oh so juicy and missing a kidney.  ABV – 5.5%
  • Tiki Apocalypse | $18 per 4-pack of 16 oz. cans – A tropical Berliner with yuzu, cucumber and hibiscus tasty enough to please the gods.  ABV – 5.5%
  • Djuice Flute | $18 per 4-pack of 16 oz. cans – (pronounced “joos floot”) A sour IPA with coconut & lime brewed in collaboration with Calusa Brewing.  ABV – 6.5%
  • I am the Walrus | $18 per 4-pack of 16 oz. cans – This Berliner with plum and bourbon soaked oak chips is so tart, so refreshing, so enigmatic, it’ll have you tasting colors while you fly high with Lucy & her diamonds. Yoko Ono can’t even touch this.  ABV – 5.5%

Note: Limits for each release will be announced the morning of the Mega Drop.

As is the case at every Mega Drop, cash is the preferred form of payment to keep the release running smoothly and the line moving.  If you cannot come up with that kind of cash by Saturday, cards are still an option.

A couple more things to keep in mind when it comes to the Mega Drop:

  • Parking is available in the lot across the street from Hidden Springs Ale Works, up and down Franklin St., on Henderson just west of Tampa St., and on 7th Ave.
  • While in line, the brewery asks that “don’t be a menace to the ‘hood while waiting fo yo juice. Hug the wall to the right of the door on Henderson.”

Other than that, just make sure that you get to the Mega Drop reasonably early to make the final head count, be respectful of the brewery’s neighbors while in line, and just have a good time while you wait to get your stash of bottles and cans.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Passion Grass from Lagunitas Brewing Company

LagunitasPassGrassPourFor this installment of Tasting Notes, we neglect some much needed yard work to instead focus our attention on Passion Grass, the new collaboration brew from Lagunitas Brewing Company (Petaluma, California) and Short’s Brewing Company (Bellaire, Michigan).

Released back at the start of August as a Joint Session brew that Lagunitas Brewing Company developed with their friends at Short’s Brewing Company, Passion Grass is a “smooth and slammable” West-by-Midwest Ale “with some passion fruit added for that pleasant summery tropical-ness, rounded off with a special zing of lemongrass.” Clocking in at an easy-drinking 4.6% ABV and 54 IBUs, Passion Grass is “best imbibed with your ‘buds … it’s good to have friends.”

Passion Grass is out now and available for a limited time in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft.  You can expect to find this “HIIIIGHLY limited brew” at select craft beer-focused establishments located in Alabama, Florida, California, Illinois, Washington and throughout the rest of Lagunitas Brewing Company’s distribution area.

Now that we know who did what and why, let’s pop these bottles, hit the lounge chairs and watch the grass continue to grow while we get into these Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Passion Grass from Lagunitas Brewing Company & Short’s Brewing Company

Appearance: Passion Grass pours a pale yellow in color and builds right at a finger of fluffy white foam.  When held to direct light, the color remains pale but does take on a more lemony yellow hue.  The beer has a nice clarity that displays an ample carbonation presence streaming up to feed the top cap.  Head retention is pretty fantastic, but it does eventually tighten up and condense down to a lasting, creamy half finger that casts a wide web of lace across the glass.

Aroma: Passion fruit is all over this aroma, bringing a big tropical presence that works beautifully with the juicier hop notes of citrus, pineapple and papaya.  The lemongrass then surfaces to create a tea-like character when combined with the more earthy/herbal/piney hop qualities.  Wonderfully complex here but in a way that is still incredibly inviting and alluring.

Taste: Not much unlike the nose, the flavor profile kicks off with a big, juicy burst of passion fruit and orange (both juice and zest).  A bevy of tropical hop notes then turn up in the form of guava, pineapple, papaya and grapefruit.  Pine, lemongrass and a slight herbal character combine with a coy malt presence to close out the profile by quietly tempering and taming all of that pronounced juicy sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Skirting on the lighter side of medium in body with a bright carbonation level, this beer is super refreshing and dries out lightning-quick.  Despite the fact that the malts do get a bit lost in the mix, the beer still finds a nice balance between its bitter, lightly tart, and fruity/sweet qualities.  At a wonderfully low 4.6%, the ABV’s only role here is to keep its head down and do whatever it can to ensure that the drinker enjoys a refreshing, easy-drinking experience.  Aftertaste is minimal, but pleasant notes of passion fruit and citrus do linger at times.

Final Thoughts: To put it simply, Passion Grass is a supremely easy-drinking beer that is everything you could possibly want in a summer-themed release.  Big tropical fruit notes supply a quenching and satisfying sweetness while the lemongrass and hops support with both complementary and contrasting notes that run the spectrum from added fruitiness to balancing earthiness and herbaceousness. Throw in that low ABV and this all results in a dynamic yet approachable experience completely focused on refreshment.  If you are in search of the perfect brew to enjoy at the beach, on the boat or after a hike, you really need to give the compact flavor bomb that is Passion Grass a shot.  Just make sure you snag a sixer before this beer’s limited-time run comes to an end.  Prost!

Big news continues to pour out of Big Storm Brewing Co. this month, and this week the topic is distribution.  After Big Storm and the family-owned Mikeska Distributing were introduced to each other at last year’s National Beer Wholesalers Association trade show in Las Vegas, the two businesses kept a dialogue going and have now officially finalized a partnership that will allow the brewery to extend its distribution reach to the Lone Star State.

Big Storm will enter Texas with Core offerings such as Tropic Pressure Florida Ale and Wavemaker Amber Ale.  If you are not familiar with these offerings, here are both beer’s official descriptions straight from the brewery’s website:

  • Tropic Pressure Florida Ale – A highly drinkable Florida ale steeped with hibiscus flowers for just the right amount of natural sweetness and a hint of cinnamon. Brewed with pale wheat and honey malt, Tropic Pressure pours the color of skin that has been kissed by the warm Florida sunshine. Keep and serve cold as hail!  ABV – 4.4%  IBUs – 17
  • Wavemaker Amber Ale – Big Storm’s very first brew was this amber ale. It presents a wave of flavor with two row Canadian barley coupled with Munich and chocolate malts. Wavemaker® Amber Ale is malt centric and highly drinkable year round with minimal hop bitterness.  ABV – 4.9%  IBUs – 28

“We’re proud to bring the bold and exciting flavors of Big Storm to Texas and join the state’s dynamic craft beer scene. I’m confident this partnership will result in a new wave of Big Storm fans and Texans will fall in love with our award-winning beers like Floridians have,” said Big Storm co-owner L.J. Govoni.

“Big Storm produces high quality craft beers and its knowledgeable staff make it a great asset for Mikeska. I know Big Storm will be a hit in Texas and elevate the range of strong brands we already offer,” Charles Mikeska said.

Big Storm’s Core beers will begin arriving in Texas this month with availability in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans and on draft. Craft beer-loving Texans can expect to find Big Storm offerings at beer establishments located within the distribution territory of Mikeska Distributing – an area that includes Austin, Fort Hood, Killeen, Temple, and Waco, Texas. Ballast Point Brewing Co. Releases White Wine Barrel-Aged Sour Wench

ballastpointlogoBallast Point Brewing Company (San Diego, California) has officially launched its new Trade Street Collection of barrel-aged beers with the nationwide release of White Wine Barrel-Aged Sour Wench.

Here to serve as a Limited Release variant of Ballast Point’s award-winning Sour Wench, White Wine Barrel-Aged Sour Wench is an “innovative new brew” that takes the original 7% ABV ale with blackberries and ages it for more than six months in chardonnay and sauvignon blanc barrels.  This lengthy treatment results in a “tart, refreshing, and delightfully smooth” White Wine Barrel-aged Sour Wench that boasts “aromas of freshly sliced white peach, citrus, woody oak tannins and rich vanilla” and flavor notes of “crushed berries and ripe apricots with a buttery smoothness from the chardonnay barrels.”

“With barrel aging, we’re giving tribute to three different attributes – the oak barrels, the wine that was in them before and the base beer,” said Steve Anderson, Ballast Point Director of Barrel Aging. “The blend that’s in the White Wine Barrel Aged Sour Wench bottles is a really nice layering of both the beer and the wine barrels, making it more complex and an amazing end product.”

White Wine Barrel Aged Sour Wench marks the first release in Ballast Point’s Trade Street Collection, a series “named after the brewery’s barrel-aging cellar, the 80,000-square-foot Trade Street facility.”  Offerings in this series of barrel-aged beers will release quarterly.  Upcoming Trade Street Collection releases will include Rye Barrel Aged Piper Down (Ballast Point’s award-winning Scottish Ale in charred American oak High West rye barrels), High West Barrel Aged Victory at Sea, and Bourbon Barrel Aged Tongue Buckler.

White Wine Barrel Aged Sour Wench is rolling out now and will hang around for a limited time.  You can expect to find this Limited Release offering available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles at select craft beer-focused establishments located in Alabama, Florida, California, Illinois, Virginia and throughout the rest of Ballast Point’s nationwide distribution footprint.  Prost!

Oskar Blues Brewery Upgrades CANundrum Variety Pack to 15 Cans

OBCanundrum2Oskar Blues Brewery (Longmont, Colorado) has officially announced that its CANundrum variety pack, now a mixed 15-pack thanks to the addition of G’Knight Imperial Red IPA, will head out for distribution on September 1.

Previously released by Oskar Blues as a 12-pack, CANundrum is back and this time it is sporting three 12 oz. cans of each of the following “five straight-shooting brews” (descriptions sourced from the brewery’s website):

  • Dale’s Pale Ale – Dale’s Pale Ale is our defiant, proud, voluminously hopped mutha of a pale ale. If you’re looking for a fistful of flavor, look no further than this hopped-up trail ride. It delivers a hoppy nose and assertive-but-balanced flavors of pale malts and citrusy floral hops from the first sip to the final swig (6.5 % ABV and 65 IBUs). Dale’s Pale Ale is the beer that started it all.
  • Mama’s Little Yella Pils – Yaya raised a rebel who grew up to have dirt on his face, sweat on his brow, and beer in his blood. That’s why Mama’s Little Yella Pils is an uncompromising, hand crafted version of the great Pilsner beers of Bavaria and Bohemia. Unlike mass market pilsners diluted with corn and rice, Mama’s is built on pilsner and honey malt then hopped with Saaz and Aramis hops. While it’s rich with flavor, its 33 IBUs and 4.7% ABV make it a luxurious but low-dose (by Oskar Blues standards) refresher. It’s damn good, crushable beer. Take two and call us in the morning.
  • Pinner Throwback IPA – PINNER Throwback IPA is as close as you’re ever gonna get to tasting some twisted up calm in the Oskar Blues chaos. We crammed so much damn aroma—and boatloads of hop & malt flavor—into this beer, but we kept it crushable too. At 4.9% ABV and 35 IBUs, this edgy-yet-easygoing, drinkable IPA uses an array of hops to target its ever-evolving flavor. With tropical fruits, citrus juices, pineapple and spice berry up front in the aroma and flavor, the biscuit & toasted bread at the back balance out all the hops and make for a great finish just in time to blaze on to your next can of PINNER.
  • Oskar Blues IPA – Trailblazers don’t torch a new passageway and then stop; they keep finding new ways in and new ways back out. That’s exactly what we did with our metamodern IPA conceived of hand-selected hops from down under. Malt barley and red wheat combine to create a clean malt backbone with a foolproof flavor and mouthfeel to support America’s sneak peek at Enigma, Vic Secret, Ella and Galaxy hops. The hops strum juicy and sweet aromas with headline notes of passion fruit, raspberries, pineapple and citrus. This intense, straight-up strain is Oskar Blues IPA (6.43% ABV). Smash a Blue Ferrigno… and it’ll smash back.
  • G’Knight Imperial Red IPA (in a mixed pack for the first time) – Our ‘Velvet M-80’ is a hefty, dry hopped double-red IPA with a nose full of aroma, a sticky mouthfeel, a malty middle and unctuous hop flavors. G’Knight sports a surprisingly sensuous finish for a beer of its size (8.7% ABV, 60 IBUs). It’s brewed in tribute to a fellow Colorado craft beer pioneer and Vietnam vet who died fighting a 2002 wild fire outside of our Lyons hometown.

The CANundrum Variety 15-pack will begin hitting shelves on September 1, 2018.  You can expect to find this mixed pack at craft beer-friendly retailers located in Alabama, Florida, Colorado, North Carolina, Texas and throughout the rest of Oskar Blues Brewery’s nationwide distribution area.  Prost!

Jester King Brewery Introduces Soul Conduit

SC2-1Jester King Brewery (Austin, Texas) has officially announced that it will release Soul Conduit, a gin barrel-aged Table Beer with dried makrut limes and thyme, at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 24.

Brewed for Portland, Oregon’s 7th annual Brews for New Avenues, Soul Conduit is basically what happens when you take Jester King’s Le Petit Prince Farmhouse Table Beer, put it into the “Old Tom gin barrels that previously held Jester King Viking Metal“, and then referment it with dried makrut limes and thyme.  No one is going to describe this beer better than Averie Swanson – Head Brewer at Jester King, so here is what she had to say about this project:

“I originally wanted to put Le Petit Prince into the gin barrels that were emptied for last year’s Viking Metal, hoping the beer would pick up a bit of the smoke character left in the barrel, as a bit of an homage to Schlenkerla Helles.” As the beer matured, Averie observed that not only did the beer pickup smokiness, but botanical character as well. “Over time the beer picked up not just the smoke but also quite a bit of the gin botanicals and has an awesome smoky fullness, juniper gin notes and a crazy tonic-like bitterness. Thus, the G&Teeter was born!”

750ml bottles of Soul Conduit will officially release in the Tasting Room at Jester King Brewery on Friday, August 24.  At this time, the brewery does not yet know if this Limited Release offering will see distribution.  Prost!
