Jester King Brewery Announces the Return of Noble King

38750262900_971d5ca0e9_kJester King Brewery (Austin, Texas) has officially released the latest batch of one of its oldest beers, Noble King Hoppy Farmhouse Ale.

Drawing inspiration from the hoppy pale beers from small European breweries such as Brasserie Thiriez, Brouwerij De Ranke, and Brasserie de la Senne, the brewers at Jester King have established their long-standing Noble King Hoppy Farmhouse Ale by exploring brewing techniques that stray a bit from those employed in their more funky and/or acidic offerings.  Instead of brewing a beer with a small amount of hops and then aging it for months or years in oak barrels, they brew this Farmhouse Ale with a hefty amount of Noble hop varietals and ferment it in stainless steel for weeks.  This approach keeps “the acidity . . . at bay” and results in a 5.8% ABV Noble King that is “dry [and] bitter, with some interesting yeast complexity.”

Noble King is available now in Jester King’s Tasting Room, and the brewery does “anticipate distribution of this beer.”  If this Limited Release offering enters full distribution, you can expect to find it available in 750ml bottles and on draft at select craft beer establishments located in Florida, Texas and throughout the rest of Jester King’s distribution network.  Prost!

Tampa Bay Brewing Co. Introduces New Logo and Can Designs

TBBClogoTampa Bay Brewing Co. (Tampa, Florida) has officially announced that it has refreshed its corporate logo and redesigned the label artwork for all packaged brands.

Firmly established as “one of Florida’s oldest independent craft breweries”, Tampa Bay Brewing Co. (TBBC) has spent the last year or so developing a new logo and look that is more representative of what the brewery has evolved into over the last 20 years.  The transition to the new logo and official branding as “TBBC” will be gradual, but “the refreshed corporate logo will begin to be used immediately on all TBBC packaged products, marketing materials, merchandise, and at the company’s Ybor City and Westchase breweries and pubs.”

“Like most mature organizations, our brand identity has slowly morphed over time and was due for a more significant refresh to better reflect our spirit and uncorporate culture. Furthermore, both internally and on the street, people have been referring to us as TBBC for years, versus our full name. This was a rare opportunity to embrace the community-given nickname in a manner that was not confusing to our long-standing customers.”

– David Doble, Managing Partner at Tampa Bay Brewing Co.

To coincide with the aesthetic of the updated logo, TBBC has also revamped the look of its packaged offerings.  A hint of this change actually surfaced last month “with the release of a refreshed Old Elephant Foot IPA can, and [consumers] can expect to see a similar refresh to Reef Donkey and seasonal releases such as Last Days of Summer, Florida Tart, Gourds Gone Wild, and Gingy.”

The new-look cans will also bring with them the new Hop Silo series, a limited release collection of hop-centric beers that will see distribution in 16 oz. cans. Here is what David Doble had to say about the new series:

“One of the first cans to release with the new branding will be Hop Silo #1 an Imperial Pilsner brewed in collaboration with Cigar City,” said Doble. “This new series, which will include three unique styles of beers that celebrate the creative use of hops, will release quarterly in limited case quantities and be available via distribution. Hop Silo #2, will be brewed during Beer Week in collaboration with Pipeworks Brewing Co. of Chicago, and #3 will be a New England Style IPA.”

The refreshed logo and can designs are actively rolling out now, so just make sure that you keep these changes in mind the next time you are in search of your favorite TBBC brews.  Prost!

Yellowhammer Brewing Moves Year-Rounds to Cans, Refreshes Look

RebellionYellowhammer Brewing (Huntsville, Alabama) has officially announced that its Year-Round portfolio will be sporting a new look in cans beginning this week.

The folks at Yellowhammer Brewing recently decided to shake things up a bit and took their first steps in joining the canned beer revolution by securing a beautiful new canning line back in January.  In doing so, this transition to cans supplied the brewery with a perfect opportunity to revisit the overall aesthetic for its packaged offerings, and – with the help of Yes’r Designs – updated their look with new, eye-catching labels that translate well on cans and properly convey the soul of Yellowhammer.

Now that the crew at the brewery has gotten familiar with the new equipment and finalized the new label artwork, the following five beers (a.k.a. Yellowhammer’s stellar lineup of Year-Round brews) are finally ready to debut as the brewery’s first canned offerings:

  • Belgian White – Yellowhammer’s first brew, the Belgian White is light, refreshing and quietly complex. Brewed with Kaffir lime leaves, fresh ginger and chamomile flowers for an original take on a traditional style.  ABV – 4.8%
  • Cheatin’ Heart IPA – A a tropical twist on the classic IPA, brewed with a lush blend of Azacca and Mosaic hops. A passionate ale with a wandering eye.  ABV – 6.2%
  • Midnight Special Black Lager – A dark lager crafted in the spirit of a German-style Schwarzbier, Midnight Special blends German Munich malts and dark roasted malts for a smooth finish. ABV – 5.4%
  • Rebellion – A Red Lager inspired by German brewing tradition, this year-round brew is crisp and refreshing. The aroma holds light malt and caramel notes, and the beer is capped with a light hoppy bitterness.  ABV – 5.4%
  • T-Minus Tangerine KölschInspired by the famous powdered orange drink sent to space with America’s first astronauts. Notes of tangerine brighten the palate and pair with the clean finish of the German-style Kölsch.  ABV – 5.0%

The beers above will officially become available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans on March 1.  You can expect to find these sixers at all craft beer friendly retailers in Alabama that normally carry offerings from Yellowhammer Brewing.  Just be sure to keep these changes in mind the next time you are on a beer run in search of your favorite Yellowhammer brew.  Prost!

Tasting Notes: Beyond the Galaxy IPA from Terrapin Beer Co.

IMGP8751_editedFor this week’s installment of Tasting Notes, we find ourselves cruising through the mid-week doldrums at warp speed thanks to a little help from Beyond the Galaxy IPA from Terrapin Beer Co. (Athens, Georgia).

Arriving as the single hop successor to Terrapin’s Mosaic Red Rye IPA, Beyond the Galaxy is a new Seasonal India Pale Ale that features a “stellar flavor and . . . aroma of candied pineapple and tropical fruit” sourced from “an astronomical amount of Galaxy hops.” Clocking in at 6.3% ABV and sporting “a soft, juicy bitterness”, Beyond the Galaxy IPA aims to “take you on a voyage where no man has gone before.”

Beyond the Galaxy IPA is available now and will hang around throughout the spring months.  You can find this new Seasonal offering in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and throughout the rest of Terrapin Beer Co.’s distribution area.

Now that we have appropriately covered all those necessary particulars, let’s crack open a few cans and single hop our way into some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Beyond the Galaxy IPA from Terrapin Beer Co.

Appearance:  Beyond the Galaxy presents itself as a deep, golden colored beer that has a solid orange hue radiating at its core.  When held to direct light, that orange tone softens and the golds glow.  This IPA is completely clear and displays an abundant carbonation level coursing within.  The pour produced nearly two fingers of bright white foam that quickly retreats down to a wispy but complete top cap.  No matter its size, the head still coats the glass with some serious lace coverage.

Aroma: The aromatics are dominated by distinct, tropical fruit notes of passionfruit, grapefruit, orange, mango and pineapple.  An undercurrent of pine progressively settles into the background and the experience closes with just a grace of sweetness from the pale malts.  Just as it should be, this aroma is all Galaxy hops.

Taste:  Leading with pronounced notes of passionfruit and pineapple, the Galaxy hops have come ready to work in this department as well.  A slight malt character eventually threads its way in as the hops transition to juicy and sweet citrus tones.  This opens further to bring some pine resin and dankness just before the experience closes out with a vibrant pop of orange and grapefruit zest.

Mouthfeel:  Falling on the lighter side of medium in body with a bright carbonation presence, this India Pale Ale is pleasantly crisp and dries out nicely.  This beer does have a moderate amount of bitterness, but it cleans up quickly.  Weighing in at just 6.3%, the ABV is incredibly reasonable for the style and further adds to the easy-drinking nature of the experience.  The aftertaste is minimal, but there is a touch of orange and grapefruit left to linger.

Final Thoughts:  Just as expected, Beyond the Galaxy IPA is a super solid study in Galaxy hops and all the tropical goodness they have to offer.  The hops absolutely rule the arenas of aroma and flavor, but the bitterness is kept in check with just the right amount of balance.  That deft level of balance combines with the beer’s juicy character, lighter mouthfeel and reasonable ABV to create an absolutely crushable, thirst-quenching experience.  Seriously, this beer is ridiculously drinkable, and it deserves your consideration whenever you are partaking in a little warm weather drinking this spring.  Check it out.  Prost!

TBBW 2018 Event: Cigar City Brewing’s Barrel-Aged Countdown to Hunahpu’s Day

unnamed (95)Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, Florida) has officially announced that it will be offering Tampa Bay Beer Week attendees a Barrel-Aged Countdown to Hunahpu’s Day 2018, a series of barrel-aged beer releases spanning from March 5 to March 8.

It pretty much goes without saying that Cigar City Brewing’s Hunahpu’s Day has earned linchpin status when it comes to Tampa Bay Beer Week (TBBW).  Hunahpu’s, as a beer and a festival, draws an insane amount of beer enthusiasts to Tampa each year and has done amazing things for the local craft beer community in the process.

Some could argue that Cigar City Brewing really does not need to do much beyond this incredible event during TBBW, but the folks at the brewery certainly will not hear it.  They want to do more, and that is why they are introducing the Barrel-Aged Countdown to Hunahpu’s Day 2018.  This series of bottle releases will span most of TBBW and will consist of the following unique and incredibly complex barrel-aged beers:

  • Wednesday, March 7Madeira Barrel-aged American Barleywine – $14.99 per 500ml bottle

These limited release bottles will be available for purchase in Cigar City Brewing’s Tasting Room beginning at 11 a.m. on each beer’s respective release date.  Each beer will have a price tag of $14.99 each per 500ml bottle and there will be no bottle limits.

Fair Warning: Do not allow the lack of bottle limits to lull you into a false sense of security when it comes to getting your hands on the beers listed above.  These Barrel-Aged Countdown beers will be sought after and they will move quickly.  If you have your eye on one (or several) of these beers, just make sure that you turn up at the Tasting Room as close to 11 a.m. as possible on the day of release, be patient, and have a great time with the Cigar City crew and your fellow craft beer fans as you all countdown the days to another memorable Hunahpu’s Day.  Prost!

Boulevard Brewing’s Tequila Barrel Lime Gose Slated for Seasonal Return

TBLG_BadgeBoulevard Brewing Co. (Kansas City, Missouri) has announced that Tequila Barrel Lime Gose will begin its Seasonal run on March 5.

Originally released last year as a draft-only offering, Tequila Barrel Lime Gose came to be via a bit of experimentation after Boulevard Brewing “acquired a truckload of freshly emptied tequila barrels from a variety of distilleries.”  After testing an assortment of base beers in the barrels, the brewing team decided to try something new and brewed a German-style Gose infused with lime peel to see how it would interact with the tequila barrels.  This move proved to be a success and the Gose emerged from the barrels boasting “aromas of oak, vanilla and caramelized banana with bright lime character transitioning to subtle tequila notes and coconut.”  Clocking in at an easy drinking 4.2% ABV, the completed Tequila Barrel Lime Gose hits the palate with “a malty sweetness . . . balanced by tart lime and hints of lively tequila, tapering to a slightly salty finish.”

Tequila Barrel Lime Gose will officially release in the Greater Kansas City Area on March 5 and 6, and it will then enter expanded distribution shortly thereafter.  You can expect to find this Seasonal brew available in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at select craft beer-focused establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Missouri and any other “areas that typically see Boulevard seasonal beers like Flora Obscura Dry-Hopped Porter and Hibiscus Gose.” Prost!
