Creature Comforts Works with UGArden to Develop Tulsi Saison

CCBC_TulsiWhiteBGStillWeb-Creature Comforts Brewing Co. (Athens, Georgia) has officially announced that it will release Tulsi, a Saison with tulsi and hibiscus, in its Tasting Room on Saturday, September 28.

A result of Creature Comforts’ partnership with UGArden and the education that UGArden’s team provided the brewery on “adaptogens and tulsi in particular”, Tulsi (6.4% ABV) is a Saison brewed with tulsi – or holy basil – locally sourced from the UGArden.  After the brewing process was completed, hibiscus – also from UGArden – was added to allow its “floral qualities . . . [to complement] . . . the earthy and herbal saison, giving the beer a nice balanced presentation.”

Tulsi will release alongside Concurrence Blend 3 (click here for more information) in the Tasting Room at Creature Comforts Brewing Co. (271 W. Hancock Ave. | Athens, Georgia) on September 28. This Limited Release offering will be available in 750ml bottles and on draft as long as supplies last. Tulsi is a Tasting Room exclusive release and is not expected to see distribution. Prost!

Cigar City Brewing Introduces Wedge Cut Wheat Ale as New Seasonal Offering

Wedge-Cut-Art-MOck-1-e1549663152929Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, Florida) has officially announced that Wedge Cut, an American Wheat Ale with lemon peel, will launch in September as the brewery’s latest Seasonal Release.

Inspired by “Florida’s cigar history, its citrus industry and its status as an outdoors destination,” Wedge Cut is an American Wheat Ale that showcases Lemon Drop hops – “a moderate alpha acid hop . . . prized for its distinct aroma and flavor of lemon zest and, indeed, lemon drops.”  To round out the recipe, Cigar City’s brewers utilize “malted wheat for the style’s signature texture and flavor” and then hit the beer with Willamette hops “for bittering before the beer is fermented with a clean, neutral American Ale yeast.”  Weighing in a highly drinkable 4.5% ABV, Wedge Cut promises to be “a flavorful, approachable and sessionable offering from one of the fastest growing breweries in the U.S.”

“With this recipe, our brewers and I wanted to highlight the expression of Hopsteiner’s very unique Lemon Drop hop,” says Sean Sasscer, Director of Brewing Operations at CCB. “On its own, the hop gives off flavors and aromas of lemon zest and lemon oil. When it’s combined with actual lemon peel, the hop takes on a remarkable lemon drop and overripe citrus quality. We’re really pleased with the play between ingredients in this beer.”

Wedge Cut is rolling out now and is scheduled to stick around through December 2019.  You can expect to find this new Seasonal offering available in 6-packs of 12 oz. cans and on draft at craft beer-friendly establishments located in Alabama, Florida and throughout the rest of Cigar City’s 40 state distribution area.  Prost!

Style – American Wheat Ale
ABV – 4.5%
IBUs – 22
Featured Hops – Lemon Drop
Fun Fact – “To name the beer, [Cigar City Brewing] looked to its Florida roots. A wedge cut cigar cutter cuts the cap of a cigar in a ‘v’ shape and spreads the smoke of a fine cigar wider over the palate. The name continues CCB’s tradition of honoring Tampa’s cigar making history. The name also references one of Florida’s favorite outdoor activities, as a wedge is a type of golf club. Finally, Wedge Cut brings to mind a lemon wedge, a nod to the beer’s specialty ingredient as well as Florida’s thriving citrus industry.”

OktoberFist the Red Makes Seasonal Debut for Iron Fist Brewing

IF-OTR-PORTRAIT-LABELIron Fist Brewing Company (Vista, California) has officially announced that OktoberFist the Red will arrive in late September as the brewery’s second Seasonal Release of 2019.

Created to serve as an experimental twist on Iron Fist’s “much loved traditional Märzen OktoberFist,” OktoberFist the Red still employs “traditional German Märzen methods, but with the addition of some less traditional malts such as Midnight Wheat.”  Beyond just lending the beer “a glowing copper, slightly reddish hue,” these malts also impart “a depth of caramel and nutty undertones seen less in similar styles.”  These malty notes are joined by “a touch of herbal hops” in the aroma while the flavor profile of OktoberFist the Red (6% ABV) features “complex notes of bread and honey, a touch of caramelized fruit through low bitterness with great malty complexity.”

“Oktoberfest beers sometimes don’t get the love they deserve as the event brings so many similar styles, many delicious but also just released year-on-year. We have been brewing this style at Iron Fist since 2013 and really wanted to experiment a little this year to really showcase the variety the style has to offer. Märzens can range from pale straw in color to dark copper. If you’re getting bored of IPAs, then this higher ABV lager with a malty backbone offers a refreshing new direction.”

– Tom Garcia, Brewmaster at Iron Fist Brewing Company

Oskar Blues Brewery Launches Lo-Cal One-y Hazy IPA as Newest Year-Round

oskarblueslogoOskar Blues Brewery (Longmont, Colorado) has officially announced that One-y 100 Calorie Hazy IPA will join the brewery’s Year-Round lineup in mid-September.

Crafted with the intention of “cultivating huge, hazy, hoppy flavor without the calorie count of a typical IPA,” One-y is a Hazy India Pale Ale “dry-hopped with El Dorado, Comet and Citra hops, and Mosaic and French Aramis appear in the whirlpool.”  Despite weighing in at just 4% ABV and 100 calories, One-y still possesses “big, fruit-forward, herbal vibes [that will] make craft beer lovers forget it’s low cal.”

“The aroma hits you first. There are notes of citrus, honeysuckle, peach and mango. The beer is fruity with a hop haze and a nice biscuit flavor to the malt. The use of pale ale malt and wheat, along with the hefty dry hop load, creates a medium body. It’s easy to drink – pairs well with breakfast, lunch, or dinner.”

Tasting Notes: Underground Mountain Brown from Founders Brewing Co.

FoundersUndergroundPourFor this edition of Tasting Notes, we journey deep down into the depths of a bottle of Underground Mountain Brown from Founders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids, Michigan).

Released in mid-August as the current installment in Founders Brewing Co.’s Barrel-Aged Series, Underground Mountain (previously introduced as a taproom-exclusive by the name of Barrel-Aged Sumatra Mountain) is an Imperial Brown Ale that has been brewed with Sumatra coffee – roasted in Grand Rapids by Ferris Coffee & Nut – and then aged for a year in Bourbon barrels in the “caves below Grand Rapids.” Crafted to be a true “celebration of the barrel, the bean and everything in between,” Underground Mountain Brown finds harmony as the malts of the Brown Ale base “complement the bold Sumatra coffee perfectly, while time spent immersed in oak creates layers of depth and complexity.”

Underground Mountain Brown is available now and scheduled to stick around through November (as long as supplies last).  You can expect to find this Limited Release available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles, 750ml bottles and on draft at select craft beer-focused establishments located in Alabama, Florida, Michigan and throughout the rest of Founders Brewing Co.’s nationwide distribution area.

Alrighty . . . now that we have properly covered all the particulars behind this brew, let’s get to the bottom of Underground Mountain with some Tasting Notes!

Tasting Notes for Underground Mountain Brown from Founders Brewing Co.

Appearance:  A somewhat vigorous pour produces a beer that is a heavily shadowed, dark brown in color and topped with one-and-a-half to two fingers of tan foam.  When held to direct light, cola tones easily push through at the edges while the intensely dark brown holds at the core.  Although quite dark and nearly opaque, the top portion of the pour (about a finger of area where the beer meets the head) reveals that this beer is clear and has a steady carbonation presence coursing within.  Head retention is solid, falling ever so slowly to a thick, creamy ring that drops cloud-like dollops of lace on the glass throughout the experience.

Aroma:  Deeply roasted coffee greets the nose with dark chocolate notes and a gentle dose of earthiness and nuttiness.  The barrel character then rolls in, providing notes of vanilla, oak, and straight bourbon.  Brown Ale character closes the aromatics with rich tones of caramel and molasses.

Taste:  Picking up where the aroma left off, the base beer jumps out first to offer decadent notes of caramel, brown sugar, molasses, toffee and toasted grain. This seamlessly shifts to a distinct roasted coffee presence that is beautifully earthy, nutty and chocolaty (both milk chocolate and bittersweet dark chocolate). The bourbon then builds, enrobing the entire experience in a soft layer of oak, vanilla and booze.  Everything here is incredibly smooth and cohesive.

Mouthfeel:  Medium in body with a middling carbonation level, this beer has just the right amount of weight to it to remind you that it is indeed 11.9% ABV while still maintaining a bit of that smooth, airiness you expect from a Brown Ale (this beer does not at all drink like an Imperial Stout or Barleywine and rightfully so). It is mostly sweet on the palate, but the coffee’s bitterness lends a great deal of balance and keeps things from getting cloying.  Getting back to that elevated ABV, it offers a gently building warmth in the throat and belly, but it is not at all out of hand.  The aftertaste is all toffee and bourbon.

Final Thoughts:  Elegantly composed, there is not one aggressive aspect to this beer.  It is clear that the brewing team at Founders applied all of the knowledge that they have obtained from brewing KBS year after year to Underground Mountain Brown because the coffee and bourbon barrel character are both given equal billing.

As notable as that is, probably the most impressive thing about Underground Mountain is how incredibly well it is drinking right now.  The elevated ABV is pretty tame, the barrel character is not at all aggressive, and the coffee has just the right amount of pop to it.  It is wildly smooth for a fresh barrel-aged offering, and we suggest that you do not sit on these bottles for too long (well . . . stash a couple because this beer will be an incredible pairing for those wonderfully brisk fall evenings headed our way).  It is damn near perfect at this point in time, so make sure that you drink Underground Mountain Brown now and drink it often while you have the chance.  Prost!

Founders Brewing Co. Plans to go Year-Round with KBS & Launch KBS Espresso Variant

kbs_espresso_bottle_carrier_3-4Founders Brewing Co. (Grand Rapids, Michigan) took to their Cadre Newsletter this week to announce that KBS is scheduled to return as a Year-Round in February 2020 and will be accompanied by the Limited Release of KBS Espresso.

Widely respected and highly coveted by Stout drinkers everywhere, KBS (a.k.a. Kentucky Breakfast Stout) is an Imperial Stout “brewed with a massive amount of coffee and chocolate and then bourbon barrel-aged to perfection.” Coming in at around 12% ABV, KBS offers an “incredibly silky and full-bodied” experience filled with “notes of vanilla, cocoa, roasted coffee and charred oak.”

When it returns in February 2020, KBS will join Backwoods Bastard as the second Barrel-Aged Series offering to achieve Year-Round availability.  You can expect to find KBS available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft at beer establishments located throughout Founders Brewing Co.’s distribution footprint.

Arriving as the first-ever packaged variant of KBS, KBS Espresso (12% ABV) takes everything you love about the original KBS and then ages it “on espresso beans after being removed from [Bourbon] barrels.” This added step results in “a fresh and snappy coffee twist on [a] classic barrel-aged beer.”

“We’ve had some fun aging KBS in different barrels like maple syrup, which worked out great, and hot sauce, which didn’t quite work out,” said Brewmaster, Jeremy Kosmicki. “But, for our first ever “official” variant of KBS, we decided to amplify a flavor that’s already at the heart of this beer – coffee. And not just any coffee, it’s the dark, roasted goodness that can only come from espresso beans, roasted by our Grand Rapids neighbors, Ferris Coffee & Nut.”

**UPDATE 11.12.19** Founders Brewing Co. has issued an update to inform fans that KBS Espresso is now scheduled to release its Grand Rapids Taproom on November 15 and will enter distribution later that month.  You can expect to find this new Limited Release available in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles, 750ml bottles and on draft at select craft beer-friendly retailers, bars and restaurants located in Alabama, Florida, Michigan and throughout the rest of the brewery’s nationwide distribution area.  **NOTE: KBS Espresso will not be available on draft in Utah or in any format in Mississippi.**  The original KBS will begin its Year-Round availability in February 2020.  **UPDATE 11.12.19**  Prost!
